Excerpt from Loloma or Two Years in Cannibal-Land; A Story of Old Fiji In the construction of this tale I have made use of the interesting manuscript here referred to, though of course a very large portion of it was not suited to my purposes. For the rest I have relied upon my own acquaintance with the scenery of the country, and my own recollections of the manners and customs of its people, which I had opportunities of observing during my residence among them. Some portions of the first half of this book have appeared in the Australasian in the form of short stories. Henry Britton (1843-1948) was a journalist in colonial Australia born in Derby, England, who emigrated with his family to Australia in 1855 where his father established a newspaper in Castlemaine, Victoria. Britton learned the business of a journalist in his father's office and in 1863 joined the parliamentary reporting staff of The Age newspaper in Melbourne, transferring to The Argus two years later. In 1870 he acted as special correspondent for the Argus in Fiji and the series of letters he wrote was republished in book form under the title of Fiji in 1870 which had a large sale. In 1873 and 1874 he returned to Fiji on further missions for The Argus and was also acting as special correspondent for The Times. In 1877 Britton was made chief of the Argus reporting staff and sub-editor, and the following year made a voyage round the world. On his return to Melbourne he resumed his connection with the Argus before joining the contributing staffs of the Age and Leader in 1883. At the end of that year he published a romance called Loloma, illustrative of cannibal life among the Fijians in the olden time, his aim being to offer readers a record of the ancient manners and customs, traditions and superstitions of the Fijians based largely on his own recollections and knowledge of the country. Some portions of the first half of the book appeared in the Australasian in the form of short stories.

Speight Of Violence written by Michael Field and has been published by University of Hawaii Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with History categories.

"In May 2000 a gang of soldiers and failed politicians, with George Speight at their head, burst into Fiji's Parliament and captured the nation's government led by its first Indo-Fijian prime minister, Mahendra Chaudhry. As the politicians were seized, hundreds of rebels ransacked Fiji's capital Suva." "This was supposed to be a coup by indigenous Fijians angry at their loss of power. But as the drama unfolded and Speight's rebels continued to hold the politicians hostage, the spectacle turned into a power struggle pitting Fijians against each other. This climaxed in a violent military mutiny." "Speight of Violence offers an insiders' view of what happened. Extracts from a secret diary kept by Deputy Prime Minister Tupeni Baba during his 56 days in captivity tell of Speight's behaviour, the conditions inside Parliament, and the beating of Chaudhry; and Red Cross letters between Tupeni and his partner Unaisi Nabobo-Baba reveal the distress and deprivations suffered by the hostages' families. Veteran Pacific reporter Michael Field, who covered the coup and the treason trials which followed, reports the barricade, court and media dramas and offers a powerful analysis of what it all meant."--BOOK JACKET.

Imperial Leather chronicles the dangerous liaisons between gender, race and class that shaped British imperialism and its bloody dismantling.
