Some 300 articles, letters, and committee reports regarding the founding of Loma Linda as a training center for health workers is included in this unabridged edition of the original compilation by Elder John A. Burden. He originally named it “LOMA LINDA MESSAGES Divine Instruction the 'Blue Print' Thru [sic] the Inspired Pen of Ellen G. White.” The original, and this present edition, consists of about two-thirds (by word count), of articles, sermons, and letters by E. G. White. But, unlike the Ellen G. White CD-ROM, and some printed editions, the original and this present edition contain another one-third by word count of letters by some twenty different authors and various committee discussions and reports. Thus, we can follow more clearly the ebb and flow between the counsels of the Lord through Ellen White and the various church leaders and committees of God's church; from the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists to the local Southern California Conference and the North American Union ConferencesWhile the members in southern California were struggling to get two recently opened sanitariums, one in San Diego and the other in Glendale, up and operating well, the counsel from the Lord in 1905 was that they were to look for a third site in the Redlands and Riverside area.Though financially strapped, led by Elder Burden, the brethren revisited a property near Redlands called Loma Linda with 76 acres and an empty sanitarium originally built at an investment of $155,000.00. When visited in 1904 it had been available for $110,000.00 which was far out of the reach of our struggling church. When revisited in 1905, the desperate investors had lowered the price to $85,000 and later in the year to $45,000. Finally, in May of 1905, with lack of support from the church organization, but with the urging of Ellen White, Brother Burden personally paid $1,000 for an option to purchase the property for $40,000. This action of Burden created great anxiety in the church leadership. In the contract, $5,000 was due in about two months. On the day the note was due, the Southern California Conference had no money to meet it. Four hours before the time was up, a letter arrived by overland mail from an unknown individual on the East coast. It contained a money draft for the exact amount needed. The option was saved and the Lord continued to bless in the raising of funds to complete the purchase of Loma Linda in less than six months rather than the four years allowed in the contract. The Lord was clearly leading. Ellen White, on visiting Loma Linda, confirmed that it was the property she had seen in vision back in 1901.This compilation by Elder Burden is an interesting record of the counsels given and of the struggles that leaders had, on all levels of the organization, as to how to implement the instructions sent them by God. This is a thrilling saga of faith challenged and faith rewarded. It is a confirmation that success in doing the Lord's work depends upon obedience to the directives given, and not upon human wisdom. Each reader will be encouraged in their trust of the counsels of the Lord through His servant messenger Ellen G. White.List of Contributors:Ellen G. White; Elder John A. Burden; Dr. George K. Whether they were utopian communitarians, sun-seeking gurus, or Protestant health reformers, Southern California's spiritual seekers drew on the United States' deepening global encounters and consumer cultures to pair religious and personal reinvention with cultural and spiritual revitalization. Through a rereading of the region's cultural landscape, Golden States provides an alternative history of California religion and spirituality, showing that seekers developed a number of paths to fulfillment that enhanced the region's lifestyle brand. Drawing on case studies as varied as surfing and yoga practices, Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, and the only designated "Blue Zone" in the United States, this work explores the long-term impact of alternative beliefs on the region. In doing so, it highlights the ongoing tensions between privileging personal choice and pursuing social good as communities navigated whether the commitment to the emotional and therapeutic needs and desires of individual believers should be pursued at the expense of broader efforts to achieve collective well-being.

"Shall we represent before the world that our physicians must follow the pattern of the world, before they can be qualified to be successful physicians? This is the question that is now testing the faith of some of our brethren. Let not any of our brethren displease the Lord by advocating in their assemblies the idea that we need to obtain from unbelievers a higher education that that specified by the Lord."

From humble beginnings, Loma Linda University Health has grown to become a major health care and educational center impacting people around the world. Back in 1905, pioneer Seventh-day Adventist Ellen G. White insisted that such an institution be established somewhere in Southern California, near Redlands and Riverside. She also predicted properties would become available that were far below their initial price. Fellow Adventist pioneer John Burden found a property that had failed in two previous business ventures--first as a hotel, then as a sanitarium. The asking price was already well below the property's value, and the buildings were already fully furnished and stocked. "Make an offer," White told him. With his own money as down payment, Burden set in motion what has become a network of multiple hospitals and professional schools. Miracle upon miracle was needed to keep the fledgling organization afloat. Be inspired by the way the hand of Providence has--and continues to--work on behalf of Loma Linda.

WHAT DOES GOD LOOK LIKE? Welcome to southeast Michigan and the small town of Carlson where faith, hope, and struggle are defined by the different faces of those who live there. An addict that sits at a bar to forget. A mother whose five-year-old boy has leukemia. Two doctors. An atheist haunted by his past and a brilliant young oncologist that places all her hope in the power of modern medicine. A blind pastor whose son hasn’t spoken a single word in thirty-eight years. But the minister sees by faith. He knows there are answers and believes that someone who cares is watching—someone with a greater purpose. Yet there is something he doesn’t know... that none of them know. In the midst of the ordinary and the devastat- ing, there is a reason these lives will be changed forever. Lightning is about to strike. The Reason opens with a thunderbolt and never lets up as it introduces us to everyday characters who are wrestling with questions: Where is God when bad things happen? Does God ignore the prayers of the faithful? The answer each character receives will astound readers while offering an unforgettable call to hope, to change, and to believe.

In this real-life Christmas fable, when a Dad decides to let his kids select the family Christmas tree, he gets an unexpected lesson about God's love. In this thoroughly contemporary holiday story, a father lets his children choose the family Christmas tree. To his surprise, the kids pick one that is crooked. As he tries one thing after another to make the tree look right, he rediscovers the power of God's love. He begins to understand Christmas in a new way, particularly when his family decorates their tree and crown it with a star, never even noticing the crookedness he spent hours in the garage struggling to hide. The tender and laugh-out-loud narrative of real-life relationships propels the reader through the most un-generic Christmas story. This upbeat and comedic treasure refreshes the Christmas message of love and faith.
