Long span suspension bridges cost billions. In recent decades, structural health monitoring systems have been developed to measure the loading environment and responses of these bridges in order to assess serviceability and safety while tracking the symptoms of operational incidents and potential damage. This helps ensure the bridge functions properly during a long service life and guards against catastrophic failure under extreme events. Although these systems have achieved some success, this cutting-edge technology involves many complex topics that present challenges to students, researchers, and engineers alike. Systematically introducing the fundamentals and outlining the advanced technologies for achieving effective long-term monitoring, Structural Health Monitoring of Long-Span Suspension Bridges covers: The design of structural health monitoring systems Finite element modelling and system identification Highway loading monitoring and effects Railway loading monitoring and effects Temperature monitoring and thermal behaviour Wind monitoring and effects Seismic monitoring and effects SHMS-based rating method for long span bridge inspection and maintenance Structural damage detection and test-bed establishment These are applied in a rigorous case study, using more than ten years' worth of data, to the Tsing Ma suspension bridge in Hong Kong to examine their effectiveness in the operational performance of a real bridge. The Tsing Ma bridge is the world's longest suspension bridge to carry both a highway and railway, and is located in one of the world’s most active typhoon regions. Bridging the gap between theory and practice, this is an ideal reference book for students, researchers, and engineering practitioners.

Excerpt from Long-Span Railway Bridges: Comprising Investigations of the Comparative, Theoretical and Practical Advantages of the Various Adopted or Proposed Type Systems of Construction According to Dr. Johnson, a bridge is a structure to carry a road across a watercourse, and although this interpretation of the word is not sufliciently comprehensive to include all cases in the present progressed stage of the art of building, yet, if we limit its application to long spans alone, we may even render it still more explicit, and with very little liability to error define a long-span bridge to be a structure for carrying a railway across a watercourse. The reasons why this is the case are sufficiently obvi ous; in the first place, the condition necessitating the adoption of a long span is generally either that a certain width of opening must be provided clear of all obstructions, or that the expense of carrying up a number of lofty piers is, owing to some difficulty in obtaining secure foundations, so great as to render it more economical to reduce the number of individual supports, and so concentrate the resulting greater load on fewer points. Neither of these conditions is likely to occur, except when a watercourse is the oh staels to be surmounted, when, probably, a navigable. The completion of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge connecting the Japanese islands of Honshu and Shikoku is a milestone in the history of bridge engineering and wind-resistant design. With a main span of 1900 meters, it is the longest suspension bridge in the world. As the April 1998 inauguration of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge approached, the International Seminar on Long-Span Bridge Aerodynamics Perspective 8 was held in Kobe, Japan, where engineers and researchers from Japan and Europe met to discuss the next generation of long-span bridges and their aerodynamics. In the seminar's papers compiled in this volume, a major topic is long-span bridge projects, including perspectives from Europe and the East Asia, a discussion of high-strength, high-performance steels, and a look at the challenges of the future. A second major topic is structural and aerodynamic design, including technical details of the wind-resistant design of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge and other long-span bridges in the world.

This book presents the latest practices in high-speed railway suspension bridge design, covering site selection, bridge type and span layout, loading assumptions and load combinations, structural stiffness, structural components, expansion joints, wind resistance, and seismic analysis. It also shares insights on the wind-train-track-bridge interaction, wind and seismic analysis and design, and provides solutions for construction and maintenance. Wufengshan Yangtze River Bridge was taken as an example to introduce the key technologies of long-span high-speed railway suspension bridges in research, design, construction, and maintenance comprehensively. This is an ideal guideline and reference book for bridge engineers and consultants engaged in research, design, construction, and maintenance of suspension bridges. It can also be adopted as a textbook for teachers and students of bridge engineering in the teaching of suspension bridges.

Multi Scale Reliability And Serviceability Assessment Of In Service Long Span Bridges written by Naiwei Lu and has been published by Momentum Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Technology & Engineering categories.

A large number of long-span bridges are under construction or have been constructed all over the world. The steady increase in traffic volume and gross vehicle weight has caused a threat to the serviceability or even safety of in-service bridges. Therefore, ensuring the safety and serviceability of these bridges has become a growing concern. In particular, long-span suspension bridges support heavy traffic volumes and experience considerable wind loads on the bridge deck on a regular basis. Excessive dynamic responses may cause large deformation and undesirable vibration of the stiffening girders. In practice, a bridge suffers from multiple types of loadings in the life cycle. In this book, a multiscale reliability method is presented for the safety assessment of long-span bridges. The multiscale failure condition of stiffness girders is the first-passage criteria for the large-scale model and the fatigue damage criteria for the small-scale model. It is the objective of this book to provide a more in-depth understanding of the vehicle-bridge interaction from the random vibration perspective. This book is suitable for adoption as a text book or a reference book in an advanced structural reliability analysis course. Furthermore, this book also provides a theoretical foundation for better understanding of the safety assessment, operation management, maintenance and reinforcement for long-span bridges and motivates further research and development for more advanced reliability and serviceability assessment techniques for long-span bridges.
