Il libro è il frutto di una ricerca che ha indagato il “corridoio bizantino”, ovvero un’esile striscia di territorio che i bizantini cercarono di difendere strenuamente durante il dominio longobardo, per mantenere il collegamento fra Ravenna, la capitale politica, e Roma, la capitale religiosa. Nei limiti del possibile, si avanzano delle ipotesi di ricostruzione geografica del suo tratto appenninico al confine fra Marche e Umbria. Era questa la parte più impervia e rischiosa per i viaggiatori dell’epoca, compresa fra le alte rupi della Gola del Furlo (Pu), la scoscesa e lunga valle fra Cagli e Cantiano e il confine con l’Umbria tra Scheggia, Gubbio, Pietralunga e Città di Castello. The papers presented here explore in various ways the interactions between clerics and the society in which Christian churches put down roots in Late Antiquity. Some of these complex processes, involved in the christianization of the Late Roman world, form the theme of the first three sections.
