When David Matthews began to research the strange underworld of boxing, he found that many were reluctant to talk to a writer looking for colour pieces without really understanding the sport. So he decided take them on at their own game and began a two-year training programme so he could have one professional fight. LOOKING FOR A FIGHT is Matthews' story of his own battle for fitness, the difficulty of learning how to punch properly and how to take a punch. Above all, he reveals what really motivates the characters that he worked and trained with. What makes someone risk their life for a purse of a few hundred pounds? Why do so many boxers believe that God is on their side? Is boxing a force for good in our society? This is a remarkable account of boxing from within and without.

In his 2005 bestseller, The Republican War on Science, journalist Chris Mooney made the case that, again and again, even overwhelming scientific consensus has met immovable political obstacles. And, again and again, those obstacles have arisen on the right—from the Bush administration, from coalitions of Republicans and from individually powerful Republicans. As the new paperback edition announces, Mooney’s book, “brings this whole story together for the first time, weaving the disparate strands of the attack on science into a compelling and frightening account of our government’s increasing unwillingness to distinguish between legitimate research and ideologically driven pseudoscience.” Looking for a Fight: Is There a Republican War on Science? started life as a ‘book event’—an online, roundtable-style critical symposium on Mooney’s work, hosted at Crooked Timber (crookedtimber.org). Eight contributors offered reviews, discussion and critical commentary. And Mooney responded to his critics.

Looking For A Fight A Memoir "I should have been alarmed at the canvas I had, in my bullheadedness, unwittingly stepped into--but I never could back down from a challenge," writes Lynn Snowden Picket in her frank, powerful memoir. An accomplished journalist, Lynn had just completed the New York Marathon and was toned and fit, but underneath she was smarting from a recent and hurtful divorce. Seeking an outlet for her stifled aggression, her trainer led her to a sweat-stained gym in Brooklyn, a place renowned for producing skilled, hard-hitting boxers. At Gleason's, Lynn would learn how to fight. Lynn steps into the ring with a cockiness that is "part naivete and part rage." Before long she's sparring with men twice her size, with years more experience. For the men at Gleason's, fighting is sometimes their only available path to glory, money, and fame. At their hands, three times a week, Lynn's ribs slam against her lungs, her face bruises, her hands swell. More difficult to overcome, however, are the tenacious panic attacks that come both in and outside the ring. Gleason's has become the focal point of Lynn's life; its mixed smells of machismo, adrenaline, and fear have become her own. After ten months Lynn is ready for her first public fight against a woman, her equal in weight and strength. This match will be the greatest test of Lynn's skill. The greatest test of her courage, however, will be knowing when to quit.

UFC 285 is one of the events of the Ultimate Fighting Championship that took place on May 30, 2020. It was scheduled to take place in Astana Arena, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was moved to the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main event of UFC 285 was a welterweight bout between former champion Tyron Woodley and Gilbert Burns. Woodley, who held the title for three years, was looking to reclaim it after losing it to Kamaru Usman in 2019. Burns, on the other hand, was on a five-fight winning streak and looking to make a statement in his first main event in the UFC. Apart from the main event, UFC 285 also featured an exciting co-main event between female flyweights Katlyn Chookagian and Antonina Shevchenko. Chookagian was coming off a loss to Valentina Shevchenko, Antonina's sister, while Antonina had won her last two fights. This bout was significant as it could potentially lead to a match between Chookagian and Valentina Shevchenko for the flyweight championship. UFC 285 also had a heavyweight bout between Blagoy Ivanov and Augusto Sakai, a female strawweight bout between Mackenzie Dern and Hannah Cifers, and a bantamweight bout between Eddie Wineland and Sean O'Malley. With these exciting matches and talented fighters, UFC 285 promised to be a memorable event for MMA fans.

"Why are we willing to die for our countries? How can ideology persuade someone to blow themselves up? When we go to war, morality, religion and ideology often take the blame. But Mike Martin boldly argues that the opposite is true: rather than driving violence, these things help to reduce it. While we resort to ideas and values to justify or interpret warfare, something else is really propelling us towards conflict: our subconscious desires, shaped by millions of years of evolution.

Why We Fight written by Josh Rosenblatt and has been published by Ecco this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-17 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

A physical and philosophical mediation on why we are drawn to fight each other for sport, what happens to our bodies and brains when we do, and what it all means Anyone with guts or madness in him can get hit by someone who knows how; it takes a different kind of madness, a more persistent kind, to stick around long enough to be one of the people who does the knowing. Josh Rosenblatt was thirty-three years old when he first realized he wanted to fight. A lifelong pacifist with a philosopher's hatred of violence and a dandy's aversion to exercise, he drank to excess, smoked passionately, ate indifferently, and mocked physical activity that didn't involve nudity. But deep down inside there was always some part of him that was attracted to the idea of fighting. So, after studying Muay Thai, Krav Maga, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and boxing, he decided, at age forty, that it was finally time to fight his first--and only--mixed martial arts match: all in the name of experience and transcending ancient fears. An insightful and moving rumination on the nature of fighting, Why We Fight takes us on his journey from the bleachers to the ring. Using his own training as an opportunity to understand how the sport illuminates basic human impulses, Rosenblatt weaves together cultural history, criticism, biology, and anthropology to understand what happens to the human body and mind when under attack, and to explore why he, a self-described "cowardly boy from the suburbs," discovered so much meaning in putting his body, and others', at risk. From the psychology of fear to the physiology of pain, from Ukrainian shtetls to Brooklyn boxing gyms, from Lord Byron to George Plimpton, Why We Fight is a fierce inquiry into the abiding appeal of our most conflicted and controversial fixation, interwoven with a firsthand account of what happens when a mild-mannered intellectual decides to step into the ring for his first real showdown.
