In the 1960's, American amateur astronomer, John Dobson, designed a revolutionary kind of astronomical telescope featuring a lightweight large-aperture reflecting system on a simple mounting, using the then-revolutionary material called teflon. The design combines simplicity and portability with large-aperture prowess. Thirty years later Dobsonians remain supreme for visually observing faint deep-sky objects and are one of the best-selling large telescopes in the USA and Europe. This popularity is reflected in the recent increase of companies now heavily marketing Dobsonians, in particular, Meade (the "Lightbridge" range), Orion USA (XT Intelliscope series), and Skywatcher (Skyliner and Flextube models). This book is the ultimate guide to buying and using commercial Dobsonians, both 'Econo' and 'Primo' models, with in-depth accounts for the various models (plus accessories) on the market and descriptions of the many innovations that amateurs have made to optimize their telescopes' performance.

Four centuries ago, Galileo first turned a telescope to look up at the night sky. His discoveries opened the cosmos, revealing the geometry and dynamics of the solar system. Today's telescopic equipment, stretching over the whole spectrum from visible light to radio and millimetre astronomy, through infrared to ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays, has again transformed our understanding of the whole Universe. In this book Francis Graham-Smith explains how this technology can be engaged to give us a more in-depth picture of the nature of the universe. Looking at both ground-based telescopes and telescopes on spacecraft, he analyses their major discoveries, from planets and pulsars to cosmology. Large research teams and massive data handling are necessary, but the excitement of discovery is increasingly shared by a growing public, who can even join in some of the analysis by remote computer techniques. Observational astronomy has become international. All major projects are now partnerships; most notably the Square Kilometre Array, which will involve astronomers from over 100 countries and will physically exist in several of them. Covering the history and development of telescopes from Galileo to the present day, Eyes on the Sky traces what happens when humankind looks up.

This book was written to help astronomers of all levels of knowledge and experience deal with important questions about astronomical equipment, its limitations, and how to overcome these limitations with modern technology. Specifically, it addresses the following questions:1.Why does my telescope not show me the "pretty pictures" that I see on websites and telescope boxes?2.Why do larger telescopes make stars but not galaxies brighter?3.What are the limitations of the human eye, and how can they be overcome?4.Why are stars that are larger and brighter than the Sun so dim in the night sky?5.Why do I need an eyepiece at all with my telescope, since my eye has a lens in it?6.Why can I see things like galaxies at all when catalogs say that they have surface brightness of magnitude 22?7.Why do stars look big on photographs, but not when I view them in the night sky?8.How do I estimate how large star images will become?9.How faint an object can I see or image, and how long will it take?10.How can I overcome the effects of light pollution?11.What are ADUs, gain, and bit depth, and how do they affect my imaging?12.What is Electronically Assisted Astronomy (EAA), and what can it do for me?13.How can I make screen images more like eyepiece views, and what limitations to this are there?Though seemingly simple on the surface, these questions have non-trivial answers. But the answers explain much about how to achieve maximum performance and benefit from astronomical equipment. In the course of answering the questions we will explore many areas of optics, physics, and astronomy itself. The book was also written to help astronomers at all levels manage expectations. We have become accustomed to spectacular images of planets, clusters, nebulae, galaxies, and now even black holes. Modern astronomy equipment available to amateurs can provide amazing views of many objects; but some of the objects cannot be seen visually in any form resembling the images, and others are beyond the capabilities of earth-bound amateur equipment. It is important to know what can be done and what cannot, both in order to manage expectations, and to help with selection of appropriate equipment for personal or organizational use. There are many excellent books available that can teach you how to process images of astronomical objects, and others on the design and construction of telescopes. The present book is intended to supplement, not replace any of those other books. It was written because the author wondered about all of the above questions, most of which are not addressed or addressed adequately in existing books. So he found out the answers, in some cases through original research, and would like to share that knowledge with interested astronomers. This book relies primarily on basic geometric optics and simple algebra. Wave optics comes in only with discussions of diffraction. There is no discussion of quantum optics, which would be relevant for designers of specialty glasses used in optical systems but not for users of that equipment. Nearly all of the major points are illustrated with graphs and charts, to simplify application of the results by the reader. But it is important for the reader not to get lost in the mathematics and technicalities of optics, imaging and digital equipment. The goal is to use this equipment to enable a better experience of the wonder and beauty of nature that brought most of us to astronomy in the first place.

The Hubble Space Telescope written by Terence Dickinson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with Astronomy categories.

A beautifully illustrated, accessible beginner's guide to the Hubble Space Telescope. Acclaimed astronomer Terence Dickinson and his longtime editor Tracy C. Read team up to explore the starry treasures in our galaxy and beyond as revealed by the Hubble Space Telescope. Since Galileo pointed his telescope at the starry night in 1609 and discovered that the hazy patch above us was not a cloud but a "river" of uncountable stars -- the Milky Way, our home galaxy -- humans have been improving on ways to understand the cosmos. We've devised ever more powerful telescopes and placed them on mountaintops, far from the bright lights of cities. But the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope in 1990 was the first time we'd sent a telescope into space, beyond the distorting effects caused by looking through the Earth's atmosphere. Orbiting roughly 350 miles above Earth and circling the planet more than 5,000 times a year, Hubble has made over 1.3 million observations, revealing the vast scope of the expanding universe beyond our solar system. In The Hubble Space Telescope: Our Eye on the Universe, young readers find out how this groundbreaking telescope gathers imagery and transmits it to Earth. This book shares what Hubble has taught us about the universe and explains its top discoveries. Chapters filled with the telescope's latest photography offer insight into: stormy weather on our solar system's planets and moons and dramatic collisions in space star clusters, nebulas and the Milky Way Galaxy the Milky Way's galaxy neighbors massive black holes and dark matter planets beyond our solar system star nurseries and glimpses of distant galaxies in deep space.
