These nine stories range from O Chonghui's first published work in 1968 to one of her last publications in 1994. Her early stories are compact, often chilling accounts of family dysfunction, reflecting the decline of traditional, agrarian economics and the rise of urban, industrial living. Later stories are more expansive, weaving eloquent, occasionally wistful reflections on lost love and tradition together with provocative explorations of sexuality and gender.

Film scholar Murray Pomerance presents a series of meditations on six films directed by the legendary Alfred Hitchcock, a master of the cinema. Two of the films are extraordinarily famous and have been seen - and misunderstood - countless times: North by Northwest and Vertigo. Two others, Marnie and Torn Curtain, have been mostly disregarded by viewers and critics, or considered to be colossal mistakes, while two others, Spellbound and I Confess have received almost no critical attention at all. Hitchcock's vision and his screen architecture, revealing key elements and showing how Hitchcock was profoundly interested not only in social class, but also in humanity's philosophical predicament, as we traverse a world fraught with shifting appearances, multiple deceptions, vulnerability and peril. Pomerance also reveals the link between Hitchcock's work and a wide range of thinkers and artists in other fields.

What was coming of age like for adolescents who lived during the time before the birth of the United States? Besides the seasons and global warming, how do we account for summer seasons' wild storms? And just where did lightning bugs come from? While today's youth are born into a world where scientists are able to explain many phenomena, really revealing the origin of things as simple as the weather and those magical little insects known as fireflies requires a master storyteller. "The Legend of the Earth Stars" is a spell-binding account of adventure and self-sacrificing love that will engage both youth and adults in an alternate explanation of some of our planet's everyday occurrences. Exposing the dangers of human greed, this legend offers a Rudyard Kipling-like vision of our natural world, with characters that readers will admire and despise, and a moral that will guide today's youth towards a deeper appreciation for their elders and their own responsibilities as new adult members of our society. This illustrated chapter book appeals to the "Just So" stories with which many adults are familiar, but in a package that will woo today's excitement-driven youth. "The Legend of the Earth Stars" divulges not only the importance of courage in the face of egomaniacal men and women, but of honoring the everyday natural world and its mysteries.

However, our heroine only sees the beauty and wisdom her great grandmother has to offer. She sees her great grandmother's beautiful eyes, loves going for walks with her, and is fascinated by the fact her great grandmother stays awake all night and decides if she didn't have to go to school, she would do the very same thing! The Theology Of George Macdonald written by John R. de Jong and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-10-08 with Literary Criticism categories.

George MacDonald (1824-1905) was writing at a time of Evangelical unease. In a society ravaged by Asiatic cholera, numbed by levels of infant mortality, and fearful of revolution and the toxicity of industry (to name but a few of the many challenges), the "gospel" proclaiming eternal damnation for unbelievers was hardly good news; rather, Christianity was increasingly viewed as the source of bad news and a tool of state oppression. MacDonald agreed: in his view, the church had become a vampire sucking the blood of her children instead of offering them eucharistic life. In contrast, like Christ, MacDonald brings before us a child. Although at first sight a familiar Romantic incarnation, in MacDonald's theology "the child" becomes an unlikely icon challenging the vampire's kingdom--a challenge reaching beyond the confines of Evangelicalism, confronting the foundations of much of Western theology. This meticulously-researched study exploring MacDonald's work--especially his "realist" and fantasy novels--in the light of its Victorian context is of more than historical interest. His incisive critique of church and empire have particular relevance today in light of the growing and troubling alliance between fundamentalist expressions of church and intolerant, right-wing politics. This volume considers MacDonald's radical solution to religious vampirism; becoming children.
