This report describes an extensive evaluation of Loran-C for use by general aviation. Flight, ground, and antenna tests were done. Flight tests measured the accuracy and the ability to make approaches. Receiver reliability and susceptibility to atmospheric noise were also studied. Ground tests looked into grid stability and grid war page. Antenna tests were done to evaluate three antenna configurations -- ADF, vertical whip, and trailing wire antennas. The measured accuracy met FAA AC 90-45A requirements for all phases of flight. Loran-C was found to be satisfactory for approaches within AC 90-45A specifications. Reliability was 99.7%, the receiver was insensitive to atmospheric noise. The time difference grid was stable in the long run. Antenna tests showed the ADF and vertical whip antennas to be suitable for airborne use. It is concluded that Loran-C is suitable for navigation as an alternative to VHF RNAV. This navigation system is suitable for use in general aviation aircraft.

This avionics cost study of the Long-Range Navigation (LORAN-C) system used by low-performance general-aviation aircraft, performed for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Office of Systems Engineering Management (OSEM), was based on a uniform approach to cost estimating with the assistance of a pricing model. The system evaluated is the Teledyne TDL-711 LORAN Micro-Navigator, with appropriate design and packaging modifications to meet the less stringent environmental and packaging requirements of general aviation. The LORAN-C system in its airborne configuration requires a receiver, a control and display unit, and an antenna with a built-in coupler. The expected costs of the avionics required by single- and light-twin-engine aircraft were developed by using a parametric cost-estimating model. These costs, shown in Table S-1, are in 1977 dollars, without inflation, and are based on annual production quantities of 1,000 units. Development costs were amortized over a 3,000-unit production quantity. The 1977 dollars were used to facilitate comparison with other cost results of alternative navigation systems previously evaluated by ARINC Research for the FAA. (Author).

A hybrid aircraft navigation system has been developed using Loran-C signals for continuous position location information, with periodic position updates from the Navy Navigation Satellite System (NAVSAT) to improve the accuracy of the system. Laboratory tests and flight tests have demonstrated the performance of the NAVSAT/Loran-C hybrid system and have established high confidence levels in its ability to provide accurate position location information, and to obtain in-flight local Loran-C grid calibration. This automatic system uses a Loran-C receiver, a NAVSAT receiver, a small computer, and associated display units to provide real-time readout of latitude and longitude.

Flight tests of a long range navigation (LORAN-C) airborne navigator were conducted in the Gulf of Mexico oil exploration and production area. Two systems were installed in a CV-580 aircraft to examine simultaneously the performance from two different LORAN-C triads. Four separate test routes were flown over a period of 3 days. These routes covered the eastern, central, and western test areas, and an overland route from Houston, Texas, to Lafayette, Louisiana. An inertial navigation system (INS) was used as a position reference standard. The INS data were updated to correct for drift. Accuracy of the position reference from the corrected INS data was + or - 0.3 nautical miles (nmi). The flight test data collected indicated that both the Malone, Raymondville, Jupiter and the Malone, Raymondville, Grangeville triads provided en route LORAN-C navigation capability which met Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Advisory Circular AC-90-45A accuracy requirements except when operating near the baseline extension of the Malone-Grangeville baseline when using the Malone, Raymondville, Grangeville triad. A series of flight tests were conducted to investigate the use of long range navigation (LORAN)-C as a helicopter navigation system in the offshore New Jersey Baltimore Canyon oil exploration area. Tests were flown aboard the Federal Aviation Adminstration (FAA) Technical Center's CH-53A using a Teledyne Systems TDL-711 LORAN Micro-Navigator. The purpose of the tests was to determine the accuracy and operational usability of LORAN-C for offshore en route navigation and nonprecision approaches. The total system accuracy met or exceeded the requirements of Advisory Circular (AC) 90-45A 'Accuracy Requirements of Area Navigation Systems' for terminal and en route phases of flight, provided the proper LORAN triads were selected. The LORAN-C System did not meet AC 90-45A nonprecision approach accuracy criteria. (Author).
