Completa el volumen un glosario terminológico y de personajes que ayuda a la comprensión de los significados. El desarrollo de los estudios de emblemática en el ámbito internacional (existe una extensa Society for Emblem Studies) ha hecho aconsejable introducir traducción al inglés de los campos de información más relevantes. Y las ventajas que proporcionan las nuevas tecnologías han sido aprovechadas con la incorporación de un CD-ROM (ejecutable por igual en los sistemas Macintosh y PC) que agiliza la combinación de búsquedas complejas. La novela empieza con la boda de una de las víctimas del dictador. En el preámbulo, hay dos compadres que comparten sus manuscritos sobre la descripción de la Villa Dolorosa, sobre la aparición del Diario original de Cristóbal Colón, y sobre las predicciones apocalípticas de la isla; continúa con la descripción de la vida del párroco de la comunidad; le sigue la descripción del dictador de la Dolorosa; desde sus orígenes, sus trucos políticos, sus medidas represivas, las aventuras de los centauros, la extravagancia de su boda, su decadencia y su muerte. Paralelamente se desarrolla la vida del héroe, sus vicisitudes y luchas contra la dictadura. La novela continúa con la desesperación y éxodo de los moradores de la comunidad, y la destrucción de casi toda la isla por un gran tsunami. Finalmente, se cierra con un epílogo donde los dos compadres hacen un escrutinio sobre los libros escritos durante la dictadura.

Hordas de machos en el frenesí de una violación colectiva: una depredación que se repite desde los comienzos de la historia, atraviesa inmutable los procesos civilizatorios, se prolonga hasta el corazón del siglo XX y actualmente ocupa un considerable espacio en las crónicas policiales. Tanto si se produce como crimen de guerra, contribuye a fines genocidas o se "normaliza" en una brutalidad cotidiana en tiempos de paz, conserva siempre los mismos aspectos instintivos de la barbarie más arcaica. Es el cono de sombra de la identidad masculina. Los centauros de la mitología griega, seres mitad hombre, mitad animal, representan su forma más extrema. Luigi Zoja —psicoanalista reconocido internacionalmente por su investigación sobre el otro polo masculino, el del padre— sondea los motivos del centaurismo como contagio psíquico y recorre sus manifestaciones, desde la esclavitud sexual de las mujeres nativas durante la colonización de América Latina hasta el epílogo sin honor de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. A diferencia de la furia bélica, que desde Homero en adelante ha generado narraciones, la violencia sexual produce, por lo general, silencio. En términos de Zoja, "deshumaniza a la víctima, pero también al agresor, porque destruye en ambos una de las capacidades más humanas, la de narrarse".

This study considers the ways Spanish American and Brazilian poets differ from their European counterparts by considering 'Latin American' as more than a perfunctory epithet. It sets the orthodox Latin tradition of the subcontinent against others that have survived or grown up after the conquest then pays attention to those poets who, from Independence, have striven to express a specifically American moral and geographical identity. Dr Brotherson focuses on Modernismo, or the 'coming of age' of poetry in Spanish America and Brazil, and the importance of the movements associated with it. He considers César Vallejo and Pablo Neruda, probably the greatest of the selection, Octavio Paz, and modern poets who have reacted differently to the idea that Latin America might now be thought to have not just a geographical but a nascent political identity of its own. Poems are liberally quoted, and treated as entities in their own right.

In her study of key radio dramas broadcast from 1930 to 1943, Lauren Rea analyses the work of leading exponents of the genre against the wider backdrop of nation-building, intellectual movements and popular culture in Argentina. During the period that has come to be known as the infamous decade, radio serials drew on the Argentine literary canon, with writers such as Héctor Pedro Blomberg and José Andrés González Pulido contributing to the nation-building project as they reinterpreted nineteenth-century Argentina and repackaged it for a 1930s mass audience. Thus, a historical romance set in the tumultuous dictatorship of Juan Manuel de Rosas reveals the conflict between the message transmitted to a mass audience through popular radio drama and the work of historical revisionist intellectuals writing in the 1930s. Transmitted at the same time, González Pulido’s gauchesque series evokes powerful notions of Argentine national identity as it explores the relationship of the gaucho with Argentina’s immigrant population and advocates for the ideal contribution of women and the immigrant population to Argentine nationhood. Rea grounds her study in archival work undertaken at the library of Argentores in Buenos Aires, which holds the only surviving collection of scripts of radio serials from the period. Rea’s book recovers the contribution that these products of popular culture made to the nation-building project as they helped to shape and promote the understanding of Argentine history and cultural identity that is widely held today.
