Latin America S New Historical Novel written by Seymour Menton and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-07-22 with Literary Criticism categories.

Beginning with the 1979 publication of Alejo Carpentier's El arpa y la sombra, the New Historical Novel has become the dominant genre within Latin American fiction. In this at-times tongue-in-cheek postmodern study, Seymour Menton explores why the New Historical Novel has achieved such popularity and offers discerning readings of numerous works. Menton argues persuasively that the proximity of the Columbus Quincentennial triggered the rise of the New Historical Novel. After defining the historical novel in general, he identifies the distinguishing features of the New Historical Novel. Individual chapters delve deeply into such major works as Mario Vargas Llosa's La guerra del fin del mundo, Abel Posse's Los perros del paraíso, Gabriel García Márquez's El general en su laberinto, and Carlos Fuentes' La campaña. A chapter on the Jewish Latin American novel focuses on several works that deserve greater recognition, such as Pedro Orgambide's Aventuras de Edmund Ziller en tierras del Nuevo Mundo, Moacyr Scliar's A estranha nação de Rafael Mendes, and Angelina Muñiz's Tierra adentro.

Apocryphal Lorca written by Jonathan Mayhew and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-08-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

Federico García Lorca (1898–1936) had enormous impact on the generation of American poets who came of age during the cold war, from Robert Duncan and Allen Ginsberg to Robert Creeley and Jerome Rothenberg. In large numbers, these poets have not only translated his works, but written imitations, parodies, and pastiches—along with essays and critical reviews. Jonathan Mayhew’s Apocryphal Lorca is an exploration of the afterlife of this legendary Spanish writer in the poetic culture of the United States. The book examines how Lorca in English translation has become a specifically American poet, adapted to American cultural and ideological desiderata—one that bears little resemblance to the original corpus, or even to Lorca’s Spanish legacy. As Mayhew assesses Lorca’s considerable influence on the American literary scene of the latter half of the twentieth century, he uncovers fundamental truths about contemporary poetry, the uses and abuses of translation, and Lorca himself.

The Spanish Song Companion written by Graham Johnson and has been published by Scarecrow Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-05-08 with Music categories.

This book, the first of its kind to be published in English, introduces the reader to the rich heritage of Spanish song. Here in one volume are the texts of over 300 songs with parallel translations in accurate and readable English. The majority are love poems, which form a fascinating anthology of Spanish poetry from the thirteenth to the twentieth century. The introduction by Graham Johnson, who in recent years has done more than anyone to kindle interest in the international song repertoire, traces the history of Spanish song from its beginnings, via the period of the Catholic kings in the fifteenth century, the Golden Age of the sixteenth, through to the remarkable rebirth in the twentieth century. All the songs and cycles frequently heard in recital are gathered here: Albeniz, Falla, Granados, Rodrigo and Obradors are generously represented, as well as Catalan composers such as Montsalvatge and Mompou. The volume is arranged chronologically by composer, and includes notes on all the major poets and composers, a discography, and names and addresses of the music publishers. The Spanish Song Companion is a much-needed volume and will be welcomed by singers, students of Spanish literature, concert-goers and record-collectors throughout the English-speaking world.

Antologia De La Literatura Espanola Siglos Xviii Y Xix written by Barbara Mujica and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-10-01 with Social Science categories.

Antologia de la Literatura Espanola: Siglos XVIII y XIX challenges traditional concepts of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Spanish literature by providing exciting new material never before available in modern editions. It includes examples of popular dramatic genres, such as the sainete and the zarzuela usually excluded from anthologies, and recognizes the contributions of women writers such as Gertrudis Hore, Carolina Coronado, Gertrudis G—mez de Avellandeda, Rosal'a de Castro, Concepci—n Arenal, Cecilia Bšhl de Faber (Fern‡n Caballero), and Emilia Pardo Baz‡n. Siglos XVIII y XIX dashes the commonplace that there was little novelistic activity during the eighteenth century through the inclusion of selections from a wide range of fiction. In addition, it incorporates fascinating new research on the theoretical basis for the development of the novel during the 1700s. This anthology also challenges the notion that the baroque withered after Calder—n. Examples from the works of transitional poets and playwrights illustrates that baroque styles and themes continued to be popular throught much of the century. In the area of nineteenth-century literature, Siglos XVIII y XIX is the first anthology to provide a truly balanced view of the political, social, and literary debates of the period. It includes ideological prose by a wide variety of thinkers: conservatives as well as liberals, Neo-Catholics as well as Krausists. Unlike other collections on the market, this volume gives a thorough account of the development of the historical novel and of the novela de costumbres contempor‡neas during both the first and second halves of the century. While in their critical introductions the editors avail themselves of the very latest research, they avoid modern (and often inaccurate) terminology, preferring the terminology used by nineteenth-century theorists themselves.
