The Nasrid Kingdom of Granada (1232-1492) was the last Islamic state in al-Andalus. It has long been considered a historical afterthought, even an anomaly, but this impression must be rectified: here we place the kingdom in a new context, within the processes of change that were taking place across all Western Islamic societies in the late Middle Ages. Despite being the last Islamic entity in the Iberian Peninsula, Granada was neither isolated nor exclusively associated with the nearest Islamic lands. The special relationship between Nasrid territory and the surrounding Christian states accelerated historical processes of change. The Alhambra is one of the most famous archaeological sites worldwide, yet knowledge of it remains very partial, focussing on the medieval palaces. This book addresses that imbalance, examining the adjacent urban and industrial zone.The Alhambra is one of the most famous archaeological sites worldwide, yet knowledge of the complex remains very partial, focussing on its medieval Nasrid palaces. Other aspects of the site are virtually unknown, not only to the general public but to archaeologists and historians as well. The Royal Workshops of the Almambra addresses this imbalance, examining the urban and industrial zone adjacent to the palaces. Once the most densely populated and extensive area of the complex, this zone, the Secano, contained houses, tanneries, and workshops including a considerable number of pyrotechnological facilities for the production of metal, glass and ceramic items. Presenting the results of the Royal Workshops of the Alhambra (UNESCO World Heritage Site) project, the book gives a much-needed insight into the industrial sector of the Alhambra. El autor pretende introducir en el conocimiento de la literatura medieval partiendo de la percepción o visión del mundo de la época. La creación literaria, como reproducción imaginaria de personajes que desarrollan una acción en unas coordenadas espaciotemporales determinadas, exige al abordar la literatura el conocimiento de aquella vivencia peculiar. El libro, en una breve síntesis, ofrece la percepción de espacio y tiempo medievales (cap I) , las interrelaciones del individuo con la sociedad ( cap II), la estética y el simbolismo medieval ( cap III), sin olvidar, en cada capítulo, su proyección literaria. Por último, analiza las características peculiares de una literatura en tránsito de la oralidad a la escritura, la movilidad de géneros de los cantares de gesta, al roman y la novela y, finalmente, los arquetipos temáticos en los que se mueve la narrativa medieval (cap IV). Recurriendo interdisciplinarmente a conceptos de filosofía, estética, historia social y antropología, nos sitúa en la perspectiva mental del medievo europeo de la que es necesario partir para comprender la literatura medieval.

La cultura del Humanismo y su recuperación-invención del Clasicismo se ubican en el centro de lo que sería uno de los tantos inicios de la Modernidad en Occidente. Una recuperación-invención que habrá de postularse como una gigantesca operación ideológica-cultural, pero que a la vez presenta las componentes de una complejidad y una densidad plenas, las cuales contrastan con aquellas visiones canónicas de un orden cronológico y estilístico. La recuperación-invención clasicista pondrá de relieve las características de una superestructura ideológica y cultural que excede e interpela aquellas meras formulaciones estilísticas. Los mestizajes, los entrecruzamientos, los sincretismos, las ambigüedades y ambivalencias, junto con los anacronismos, implican otra interpelación: aquella ejercida contra la idea de un origen, y contra la idea de la historia como una determinación de categorías claramente establecidas y diferenciadas. Las problemáticas de la forma y de la organización del lenguaje, las articulaciones entre norma y variación, el lugar del experimentalismo, la relación con la Naturaleza, el lugar de la ciudad, o las relaciones entre forma y significado, se despliegan en su relación profunda con un modo de producción cultural que actúa entre la legitimación y la interpelación, entre la vocación de construcción de un código y su desestabilización. Visto como una producción proveniente desde el propio conocimiento disciplinar y de sus articulaciones con lo cultural, el trabajo no solo implica una mirada sobre y desde la historia sino también la posibilidad de volver a pensar las problemáticas del proyecto y de la arquitectura.
