El autor aborda un amplísimo tema no tratado hasta la fecha por la historiografía rumana, ni por la española ni tampoco por la historiografía europea en general, cubriendo un vacío existente en una larga serie de estudios internacionales dedicados a diferentes cultos orientales y provincias del Imperio Romano (series EPRO-RGRW, de Brill). Se presenta en primer lugar una introducción metodológica y un estado de la cuestión muy completo, secundados por una exposición sintética del contexto geográfico e histórico. La parte central de la tesis está dedicada al estudio de la difusión de estos cultos en las tres provincias dácicas, dedicando diferentes capítulos al Mitraísmo, a los cultos sirios, a los cultos minorasiáticos y a los cultos egipcios, donde se analizan la distribución de los monumentos epigráficos, escultóricos y los templos de cada culto, la cronología de la difusión, la onomástica y el origen étnico de los dedicantes, y también su distribución social, estableciendo como categorías los diferentes ordines sociales y también las ocupaciones. Además, incluye un capítulo dedicado al problema de la identificación de Sol Invictus y otro en el que se analiza en conjunto la difusión de los cultos. Una tercera parte, más interpretativa, se centra sobre la relación del culto imperial y los cultos de origen oriental, y sobre las formas de integración y de control social e ideológico observadas. Después de las conclusiones en español, se incluye un amplio resumen y las conclusiones íntegras en rumano. El primer volumen se completa con una rica bibliografía, listados de imágenes y abreviaturas. Por su parte, el segundo volumen comprende un extenso y completo corpus epigráfico, complementado por diversas listas de concordancia, abreviaturas bibliográficas y un extenso apéndice de fotografías y dibujos de inscripciones de gran calidad, con una lista que señala sus lugares de procedencia. Finalmente, se incluyen unos útiles y amplios índices analíticos de ambos volúmenes.

The Danubian provinces represent one of the largest macro-units within the Roman Empire, with a large and rich heritage of Roman material evidence. Although the notion itself is a modern 18th-century creation, this region represents a unique area, where the dominant, pre-Roman cultures (Celtic, Illyrian, Hellenistic, Thracian) are interconnected within the new administrative, economic and cultural units of Roman cities, provinces and extra-provincial networks. This book presents the material evidence of Roman religion in the Danubian provinces through a new, paradigmatic methodology, focusing not only on the traditional urban and provincial units of the Roman Empire, but on a new space taxonomy. Roman religion and its sacralized places are presented in macro-, meso- and micro-spaces of a dynamic empire, which shaped Roman religion in the 1st-3rd centuries AD and created a large number of religious glocalizations and appropriations in Raetia, Noricum, Pannonia Superior, Pannonia Inferior, Moesia Superior, Moesia Inferior and Dacia. Combining the methodological approaches of Roman provincial archaeology and religious studies, this work intends to provoke a dialogue between disciplines rarely used together in central-east Europe and beyond. The material evidence of Roman religion is interpreted here as a dynamic agent in religious communication, shaped by macro-spaces, extra-provincial routes, commercial networks, but also by the formation and constant dynamics of small group religions interconnected within this region through human and material mobilities. The book will also present for the first time a comprehensive list of sacralized spaces and divinities in the Danubian provinces.

From Ancient Rome to Colonial Mexico compares the Christianization of the Roman Empire with the evangelization of Mesoamerica, offering novel perspectives on the historical processes involved in the spread of Christianity. Combining concepts of empire and globalization with the notion of religion from a postcolonial perspective, the book proposes the method of analytical comparison as a point of departure to conceptualize historical affinities and differences between the ancient Roman Empire and colonial Mesoamerica. An international team of specialists in classical scholarship and Mesoamerican studies engage in an interdisciplinary discussion involving ideas from history, anthropology, archaeology, art history, iconography, and philology. This book brings together recent developments in modern migration theory, a wide range of sources, new and old tools revisited (from GIS to epigraphic studies, from stable isotope analysis to the study of literary sources) and case studies from the ancient eastern Mediterranean that illustrate how new theories and techniques are helping to give a better understanding of migratory flows and diaspora communities in the ancient Near East. A geographical gap has emerged in studies of historical migration as recent works have focused on migration and mobility in the western part of the Roman Empire and thus fail to bring a significant contribution to the study of diaspora communities in the eastern Mediterranean.
