Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett –Lord Dunsany (1878-1957)–, heredero de una de las baronías más antiguas de Inglaterra, estudió en Eton y participó como oficial en la guerra Anglo-Boer y en la Primera Guerra Mundial. Tradujo a Horacio y enseñó literatura inglesa en Atenas, de donde escapó poco antes de la invasión nazi. Escribió poesía, ensayo y novela, y conoció además enorme éxito como dramaturgo. Es considerado como el primer escritor de cuentos de fantasía para adultos, y como tal fue admirado por autores de la talla de Lovecraft, Tolkien y Borges. Sobre su labor como narrador Lovecraft escribió: «dibuja con formidable eficacia un cuerpo de mitos y leyendas dentro del círculo de la cultura europea, produciendo un ciclo compuesto por fantasías en las que cada sustancia (el colorido oriental, la forma helénica, la penumbra teutónica y el anhelo céltico) está soberbiamente mezclada y complementa al resto sin sacrificio de la congruencia y la homogeneidad». Los dioses de Pegana es su primera obra. En esta deliciosa teogonía crepuscular, en la que ya se manifiestan plenamente los rasgos que definen toda la obra de su autor, conviven la épica y la lírica, la atmósfera onírica y la reflexión sobre la situación del hombre en el mundo, el acento trágico y la ironía.
