Bajo este título se presenta un estudio de la historia de la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de Salamanca en un periodo que abarca desde 1820 hasta 1900. En el mismo se atiende tanto a la institución docente como a los individuos que la integraron, por lo que puede calificarse de una obra ambiciosa, tanto por estos aspectos que se tratan, como por la señalada cronología, teniendo así una visión de conjunto de la Facultad de Derecho salmantina en el siglo XIX, periodo en que vio cómo la implantación del régimen liberal trajo la uniformización y centralización administrativas poniendo en peligro su pervivencia, además de situarla entre las Universidades periféricas que sobrevivieron como satélites alrededor de la Universidad Central de Madrid. El hecho de que durante muchos años fuese la única Facultad mayor de la Universidad salmantina hace que este trabajo sirva también para conocer más a fondo la historia decimonónica de la institución centenaria.

The university reforms that took place in Europe throughout the 18th century were an important moment of change in the history of these institutions. In the Iberian Peninsula, this wave of reforms left its mark in Coimbra and Salamanca (later reaching the other Spanish universities). Portugal and Spain were no strangers to the motivations and even to the general lines of this wave of reforms. Inseparable from the ideas of the Enlightenment, and with a clear will to combat the backwardness and decadence of these institutions, rather ambitious projects emerged, albeit in different degrees. Coimbra faced a rather disruptive initial situation while in Salamanca later plans (1807, for example) proved to be quite ambitious as well. All having a mandatory nature, it would not be correct to say that these Universities did not participate in these processes of reform. Individually or on behalf of collective bodies, several initiatives and proposals emerged during this period in both Universities. In addition, the participation of professors in the statutes and plans that were launched since 1771 is recurrent. Beyond this aspect, it will not be forced to state that the curricular aspect was the most significant mark of these reforms. Thus, we chose to study in a comparative way subjects that sought to explain the concept of nature and its products. With the clear objective of preparing a body of technicians capable of providing a rational and effective exploitation of the various natural products, the faculties of mathematics and philosophy emerged. In the case of medicine, natural products were essential to produce medicines and in this sense the reform of this knowledge brought, among other changes, matters linked to pharmaceutical studies. In the area of law, a relevant introduction was natural law. The perception of natural law was not similar in both countries, and an evident consequence was the greater instability of this chair in Salamanca. Inseparable from the curricular aspects was the adoption of foreign compendia and the encouragement given to the teachers to write their own textbooks. The adoption of textbooks was quite similar, and clearly shows us the lines that reformers sought to follow to modernize these university institutions.

Every student of criminal law knows for a fact that the Poulterers' Case (1611) launched modern criminal conspiracy. This decision laid the first stone of the principle that an agreement to commit a crime is also a crime. However, besides what the law reports say, little is known about the facts of the case. This edition of the testimonies collected by the Star Chamber intends to fill this gap. Additionally, an introductory study will discuss how these facts shed new light on the reasons that were mustered in support of the decision. It will also argue that modern conspiracy was not a creation of the courts but rather of the nineteenth-century scholars who turned the Poulterers' Case into a landmark case.Todo estudiante angloamericano de derecho penal sabe que el Poulterers’s Case (1611) dio el primer paso hacia el delito moderno de conspiración en Inglaterra. Esta decisión puso la primera piedra del principio según el cual con el acuerdo para cometer un delito se comete ya un delito. Sin embargo, aparte de lo que dicen los law reports, poco se sabe de los hechos del caso. Esta edición de los testimonios recogidos por la Star Chamber pretende colmar esta laguna. Además, un estudio introductorio analizará cómo estos hechos arrojan luz sobre las razones que se esgrimieron en apoyo de la decisión. También se argumentará que la conspiración moderna no fue una creación de los tribunales, sino de los juristas del siglo XIX que convirtieron el Poulterers’ Case en un hito jurisprudencial.
