El verdadero propósito de Colón era llegar a la Especiería, a las islas Molucas indonesias y, en su travesía, se topó con América. El Imperio español en las Indias o el levantado en el lejano Oriente, igual que los imperios asiáticos creados por Portugal, Gran Bretaña o los Países Bajos, fueron, en buena medida, la consecuencia del complejo hallazgo de la canela, el clavo y la pimienta, en lugares cuyo acceso estaba más allá del alcance de la fantasía. Por eso, la memoria de los hombres que partieron en su busca, de sus naves, de sus éxitos, de sus logros y de sus sacrificios, debe constar una y otra vez. Y en ella hay que consignar la mención específica de los triunfos, los alcances y las experiencias irrepetibles: el descubrimiento de un nuevo océano que dio acceso a Asia por el Occidente; la travesía del estrecho, al sur del continente americano, que permitió la unión oceánica entre América y Asia; la primera circunnavegación de la Tierra; el descubrimiento de las islas Filipinas, en las que los españoles se asentarían hasta casi comienzos del siglo XX , y de otros archipiélagos durante la travesía del Pacífico; el hallazgo de los vientos y las corrientes que hicieron posible el tornaviaje y, gracias a ello, la creación de la ruta comercial del galeón de Manila, que perpetuó más de 200 años ininterrumpidos de singladuras; y, para los creyentes, que siempre fueron mayoría en la Península y en las clases dirigentes de las Indias, la evangelización y la expansión de la fe cristiana, sin duda, uno de los logros que más valoraron. La presencia española en las Molucas fue dura y breve, pero, como en tantos otros lugares lejanos, de ella quedan más que vestigios: desde un idioma criollo específico hasta una importante herencia religiosa y documental.

The 'Defenestration of Prague', the coup d'etat staged by Protestant Bohemian nobles against officials of the Hapsburg Emperor triggered the Thirty Years War. When Habsburg Spain intervened in support of their Holy Roman Emperor relative, what had started as a localised political and religious dispute in Germany, transformed into a European and global conflict. In seeking to exploit the Bohemian revolt, Spanish Habsburg revanchist ambitions directed by the Spanish Count of Olivarez at the economically powerful Dutch Republic were allied with the Habsburg Emperor’s counter-reformation ambitions. After the Bohemian defeat at the White Mountain in 1620 the war widened as the Dutch Republic, England, Transylvania, Denmark, Sweden, and Richelieu’s France all intervened to roll back Habsburg hegemony and restore the balance power. There was extensive fighting across the globe, as the Dutch and English sought to challenge the Spanish Habsburg global monopoly. These colonial wars were a major factor in the Iberian revolutions with brought down the Habsburg Imperium. Professor Charles Boxer called it: “the first world war”. It was a tragic war of attrition but also an epic story of remarkable individuals including the 'titans’ of the era,' Imperial General Wallenstein, warrior King Gustavus, sinister Count Olivarez, and the masters of international intrigue, realpolitik and diplomacy- Cardinals Richelieu and Mazarin. Above all there were the decisive victories of the under-sung military genius of the era, Lennart Torstensson. The Treaties of Westphalia followed a war which not only changed the global balance of power, but accelerated over thirty years the transformation of the European continent from a world characterized by dynasties and the medieval concept of United Christendom to a European order that was recognisably modern.

This book explains how Genoese entrepreneurs transformed the structures of global trade during the second half of the seventeenth century. The author reconstructs the business network built by the Genoese merchant Domenico Grillo between the 1650s and the 1680s. Grillo’s business interests stretched from the Mediterranean to Pacific South America, traversing and joining the Spanish, Dutch, and English Atlantics. He and his associates created a new business model that was to be emulated by Dutch, French, and English traders in subsequent decades: the monopolistic asientos for the exploitation of the trans-imperial and intra-American slave trade to Spanish America. Offering a connected history of capitalism across trans-continental geographies and different empires, this book challenges established views of a period which has traditionally been interrogated from a northern European mercantile perspective. Cutting across the histories of the slave trade in the Atlantic world, early modern capitalism, and early modern empire, this study has much to offer to students and scholars interested in the agents, economic practices, and geographies of trade that do not easily fit into and therefore disrupt the traditional narratives of the Rise of the West. El paso del sudoeste es la historia novelada de Fernando de Magallanes (Sabrosa, Portugal, primavera de 1480; isla de Mactán, Filipinas, 27 de abril de 1521) y de Juan Sebastián Elcano (Guetaria, Guipúzcoa, invierno de 1476; Océano Pacífico, 4 de agosto de 1526) para conmemorar el 500 aniversario de la gloriosa gesta que supuso la primera circunnavegación al globo terráqueo. Se narra la odisea de las cinco naves que partieron de Sevilla el 10 de agosto de 1519, con doscientos treinta y nueve hombres, y el regreso de solo una de ellas, La Victoria, con dieciocho tripulantes, el 8 de septiembre de 1522, cargada de especias con las que se sufragó la expedición. En El paso del sudoeste se relatan las penurias, motines, ejecuciones y el hambre que mató a muchos marineros junto al descubrimiento del estrecho de Magallanes y la forma de vida durante el siglo XVI en el Brasil, Patagonia, Polinesia, Islas Filipinas y archipiélago de las Especias. Al proyecto de Magallanes, alma del viaje hasta su muerte en combate, se sumó el coraje y determinación de Juan Sebastián Elcano, capaz de navegar con su navío por mares enemigos, falto de todo, hasta culminar su periplo al frente de dieciocho famélicos supervivientes tres años después de iniciado. Como premio a su proeza, Carlos V le concedió una generosa pensión vitalicia, el derecho a usar armas de fuego y la divisa Primus circumdedisti me para ornar sus blasones.
