Science and Catholicism in Argentina (1750–1960) is the first comprehensive study on the relationship between science and religion in a Spanish-speaking country with a Catholic majority and a "Latin" pattern of secularisation. The text takes the reader from Jesuit missionary science in colonial times, through the conflict-ridden 19th century, to the Catholic revival of the 1930s in Argentina. The diverse interactions between science and religion revealed in this analysis can be organised in terms of their dynamic of secularisation. The indissoluble identification of science and the secular, which operated at rhetorical and institutional levels among the liberal elite and the socialists in the 19th century, lost part of its force with the emergence of Catholic scientists in the course of the 20th century. In agreement with current views that deny science the role as the driving force of secularisation, this historical study concludes that it was the process of secularisation that shaped the interplay between religion and science, not the other way around.

How did liberationist Christianity develop in Argentina between the 1930s and early 1970s? And how did it respond to state terrorism during the Dirty War? How did liberation theology develop in Argentina between the 1930s and early 1970s? And how did it respond to state terrorism during the Dirty War? Understanding the movement to be dynamic and highly diverse, this book reveals that ecclesial and political conflicts, especially over Peronism and celibacy, were at the heart of the construction of a liberationist Christian identity, which simultaneously internalised deep tensions over its relationship to the Catholic Church. It first situates the rise of a revolutionary Christian impulse in Argentina within changes in society, in Catholicism and Protestantism and in Marxism in the 1930s, before analysing how the phenomenon coalesced in the late sixties into a coherent social movement. Finally, the book examines the responses of liberationist Christians to the intense period of repression under the presidency of Isabel Perón and the rule of the military junta between 1974 and 1983. By exploring these distinct responses and uncovering the heterogeneity of liberationist Christianity, the book offers a fresh analysis of a movement that occupies a major role in the popular memory of the period of state terror, and provides a corrective to narratives that depict the movement as monolithic or as a passive victim of the dictatorship.

Durante los seis años del gobierno de Domingo Alfredo Mercante las cuestiones educativas fueron tratadas desde distintas concepciones ideológicas. Si bien esa diversidad encuentra explicación en la distinta orientación político-ideológica de las gestiones de Alejandro Greca (1967-1947), Estanislao Maldones (1947-1949) y de Julio César Avanza (1949-1952), puede señalarse que reflejaba la pluralidad de líneas que coexistían en los niveles directivos de la educación. Así, figuras como Jaime Glattstein, quien orientó la enseñanza preescolar en los principios de la escuela activa, o Bernardo Serebinsky, médico psiquiatra de filiación freudiana y de compromiso político con los republicanos españoles, creador del Instituto de Psicología y Orientación Profesional, compartieron funciones con católicos, como Emilio Mignone, en la Dirección de Enseñanza, el pedagogo Rafael Ruta, en el Departamento de Didáctica, o el padre Leonardo Castellani, como asesor ministerial. Esta composición, no obstante el sesgo catolizante impreso a partir de 1949, evidenciaba tanto la heterogeneidad del campo técnico-pedagógico como la vigencia de una pluralidad ideológica. Múltiples fueron las transformaciones educativas durante el mercantismo. En lo institucional se produjo a partir de 1949 la transición del sistema educativo fundacional a un modelo que privilegió la ejecutividad sobre la deliberación, se complejizó la estructura de gobierno con la incorporación de organismos que atendieron a nuevos niveles y modalidades, y se sumaron otros, de sesgos modernizantes, que aportaron conocimientos técnico-científicos al tradicional saber pedagógico que predominaba en la educación provincial. La concreción de las 2982 obras del Plan Integral de Edificación Escolar resolvió el problema que la educación provincial arrastraba desde sus inicios. En tanto, el sesgo católico que Mercante impuso a la educación a partir de 1949, en tiempos que comenzaban a arreciar las tensiones entre Perón y la Iglesia católica, no puede considerarse extraño a la confrontación entre ambos líderes políticos.
