En el interés de comprender la organización territorial de los países, cada vez es más necesario estudiar el entorno socioeconómico de las regiones y de las localidades. En un mundo dominado por el enfoque macro, el enfoque micro ha sido uno de los grandes olvidados. Este olvido ha conllevado consecuencias muy graves porque ha implicado una insuficiente reordenación territorial y de la inadecuada gestión de los recursos. Por esta razón, es necesario potenciar el estudio del desarrollo local. Los profesores Francisco Llamazares Redondo y Sergio A. Berumen se han dado a la tarea de mostrar la utilidad de los Métodos de Decisión Multicriterio en la búsqueda de respuestas para el ámbito local. Sus principales contribuciones se centran en considerar que no sólo los factores estrictamente económicos influyen en el desarrollo de las regiones, sino que se constata una profunda y continua revalorización de aspectos metaeconómicos, como el entorno, y en la manera en que las técnicas de análisis multivariante pueden ser utilizadas para la identificación de la posición socioeconómica en el ranking municipal. Para la consecución de tales fines, los autores sugieren reducir las variables originales en factores (no observables), gracias a lo cual, es posible obtener grupos de variables con un significado común y de esta manera explicar mejor los indicadores de los municipios objeto de estudio. Las herramientas utilizadas en este libro nos permiten elaborar una ordenación de los municipios según su aportación a los factores socioeconómicos y, en virtud de ello, determinar su posición de mayor a menor. Debido a que estas técnicas son abstractas, los autores las han desarrollado sobre el caso concreto de la Comunidad Autónoma de Castilla y León, y se han centrado específicamente en el sector de la minería. Este particular caso es especialmente relevante porque, como sabemos, en los próximos años este sector se verá obligado a emprender un intenso proceso de reconversión industrial. La aplicación de la metodología AHP combinada con el análisis factorial y el análisis Cluster (con el uso conjunto de indicadores sociales y económicos), abre nuevas vías de profundización en la materia. Este libro será especialmente de utilidad para los estudiosos del desarrollo local, sea en el ámbito de las empresas, las instituciones autonómicas y municipales y en el de la investigación universitaria, o para aquellos que estén interesados en utilizar nuevas herramientas de aplicación en el marco de la nueva Política Regional Europea.
