"La guerra de las Alpujarras comienza con la tortura y muerte de unos cientos de cristianos viejos en la Nochebuena de 1568 y días inmediatos. Era la consecuencia primera de explosión de la ira de los moriscos duramente oprimidos, explotados y vejados durante las ocho décadas procedentes. Son hechos que narraron con puntualidad los cronistas, especialmente Luis del Marmol Carvajal, y luego un sinfin de historiadores, y por tanto de sobre conocidos. Lo que este libro propone no es la recreación de aquellas "Navidades de Sangre", sino el debelamiento -mediante un estudio crítico y desmitificador- del montaje martirial que con el acceso al solio arzobispal granadino de don Pedro de Castro va a presidir la vida religiosa granadina durante su pontificado y los siglos inmediatos. Empeñado este notable prelado en la creación de un paradigma católico que además de borrar los siglos de dominación musulmana legitimara la alta progeina de la "Iglesia restaurada" y su primacía hispana, no dudó en sumar a las invenciones sacromontanas, libros y plúmeos y relíquias, cuantos elementos fueran necesarios en el fortalecimiento de su ideal. Los todavía recientes "martirios" -así se conceptuaron desde el primer instante - alpujarreños actuarían de cordal idóneo con los de la Antigüedad granatense, por su rotunda proximidad. Nació de esta manera un programa recristianizador que tuvo enseguida entusiastas continuadores y que ha llegado hastas nuestros días con causal recurrencia. En las Alpujarras, solar de los hechos, y en el fluído momento de la repoblación, creó una suerte de "mentalidad martirial" que fue aprovechada por los herederos de aquellos mártires como medio de medra; pero también marcó de forma indeleble la religiosidad de la comarca en sus creencias, ritos y advocaciones, hasta el punto de constituirse en uno de los grandes pilares de su identidad, reforzando la tradicional pugna entre realidad hist ́roica y mitología que aprisiona a esta singular comarca" -- Cubierta.
