The military coup that toppled Chilean President Salvador Allende in 1973 led to one of the most repressive military dictatorships in Latin American history. Although the coup's full origin remains one of the great mysteries of the Cold War, most assume that powers in Washington were largely to blame, given the long history of U.S. interventionism in Latin America. These assumptions were only strengthened by ongoing suspicions about the Nixon administration's role in a failed campaign to prevent Allende's inauguration in 1970. Providing a comprehensive account of the Nixon administration's efforts to undermine and unseat Allende, the book relies heavily on newly declassified records, addressing several crucial questions regarding U.S. involvement. The author explores several counterfactual scenarios to highlight important turning points and crucial decisions which contributed to the failure of Chilean democracy.

This book argues for a new reading of the political and ethical through the literatures of Argentina, Chile, and Paraguay from 1970-2000. Carlos Amador reads a series of examples from the last dictatorship and the current post-dictatorship period in the Southern Cone, including works by Augusto Roa Bastos, Roberto Bolaño, Ceferino Reato, Horacio Verbitsky, Nelly Richard, Diamela Eltit, and Willy Thayer, with the goal of uncovering the logic behind their conceptions of belonging and rejection. Focusing on theoretical concepts that make possible the formation of any and all communities, this study works towards a vision of literature as essential to the structure of ethics.

Allende Pinochet And The Jews written by Gustavo Guzmán and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2026-04-16 with History categories.
This book examines the attitudes of Chilean President Salvador Allende and General Augusto Pinochet toward Jews and the State of Israel. Throughout his political career, Allende expressed solidarity with European Jews in the 1930s, supported the establishment of a Jewish state in the 1940s, and opposed left-wing criticism of Israel in the 1950s and 1960s. As president, he interceded on behalf of Jewish dissidents in the Soviet Union, condemned Arab terrorism, and maintained strong diplomatic ties with Israel. Pinochet, who toppled him as a dictator in 1973, made even more gestures of goodwill despite his regime’s deplorable human rights record, regarding Jewish Chileans as wealthy White people whose economic acumen and strong US connections made them indispensable for the success of his regime. Moreover, Jerusalem became a key strategic ally of Santiago, supplying weapons that Washington withheld, and Pinochet in turn staunchly supported Israel at the United Nations. Drawing on a diverse set of sources including recently declassified documents, Guzmán explores the broader story of these two figures and the impact of the coup on both Chilean Jews and Israel. This is a valuable resource for scholars and students of Jewish history, Latin American history, Cold War studies, and antisemitism studies.
