The first in a line of adventures within the National Geographic Kids Chapters series, Crocodile Encounters will surely prove to be one of the most exciting. Follow along with National Geographic explorer Brady Barr as he crawls into a muddy hole just barely big enough for his shoulders, and comes face to face with thirteen crocodiles! Laugh out loud as you learn how to catch a crocodile using shoe laces and underpants. Read in anticipation to find out what happens when you put a 600-lb crocodile on an airplane in just a flimsy wooden crate. These action-packed stories and more will engage readers and inspire them to go out and explore their own world. Stories include: • "Undercover Croc," in which Brady "becomes a crocodile," by donning a specially-designed protective croc suit, and infiltrates a group of Nile crocodiles in Tanzania. • "Toy Story," in which he uses (and loses) a radio-controlled car with video camera, in a hilarious failed attempt to capture a Nile crocodile in South Africa. • "Deep Dark Den"--in an attempt to relocate a group of crocodiles causing problems to neighboring villagers in Costa Rica, Brady finds himself underground in a deep muddy hole with thirteen angry crocs. • "Croc in a Box," Brady tries to move a giant, troublesome croc from Uganda safely to an American zoo, but discovers the croc is much stronger than the "sturdy wooden box" that has been built to contain him. "The Letters of Nicodemus is a fictional account of the impact of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ upon one of the lesser New Testament characters, but it is in no way just another recital of a familiar story. Nicodemus is presented as a man of intelligence and great learning, devoted to the law of Moses and to the conventions of his sect, but drawn to the compelling personality of the miracle-worker from Nazareth through the lingering illness of a favorite daughter. Against a convincing and vivid back-ground of Jewish and Roman politics and known Biblical events, Nicodemus' letters to his former teacher, Justus, reveal the subsequent bitter and bewildering struggle his frank incredulity in a Messiah who could never conform to the expectations of the Jewish priesthood, and his deep need to know and to accept the mysteries of Christ's words and deeds. Jan Dobraczynski, one of the leading contemporary novelists in Poland, has written a moving and scholarly interpretation of the growth of belief amongst those in direct contact with Christ. "The Letters of Nicodemus" is a novel which in its profound religious sense and bredth of imagination will appeal to readers of all denominations.

Hans Vredeman De Vries And The Artes Mechanicae Revisited written by Piet Lombaerde and has been published by Brepols Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Architectural drawing categories.

In this publication, attention is devoted to the technical aspects in the work of Hans Vredeman de Vries. Throughout his long career, he has perfected his skills as a painter, architect, fortification engineer and hydraulic engineer. Those technical aspects are considered not so much as discrete characteristics, but rather as a particular way in which this late sixteenth- century artist from the Low Countries typically dealt with a number of disciplines of the technical and applied arts. Indeed, from a predominantly traditional approach to his work, too much emphasis has until now been placed on his highly personal contribution to the dissemination of ornamental elements, whereby typical Renaissance characteristics, such as technical innovation and engineering, are relegated to the background. During Hans Vredeman de Vries's lifetime, attempts began to be made to define the arts and the sciences. Defining the demarcation criteria of the sciences would continue to gain in importance especially at the beginning of the seventeenth century. With his work, Vredeman de Vries raised Architectura together with all its technical acquisitions to the level of both the Artes and the Scienciae. Attempts were even made to establish some kind of hierarchy. Yet the artist never strictly separated fine and applied arts, nor did he explicitly distinguish between theory and practice. It was the intention of Vredeman de Vries to aim towards an equilibrium between the sciences and the arts. A team of thirteen distinguished art and architectural historians from North America, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium focus upon Vredeman de Vries's diverse manifestations of knowledge: urbanism, fortification works, hydraulics, interior decoration, architecture (its practical and technical aspects), inlay work and furniture, tapestry and the use of scientific instruments. One author points out that the similarity between such 'technical' practices and the structure of, for example, sixteenth-century rhetorical practices, forces us to consider Vredeman de Vries not simply as an architect, an engineer, or a designer, but above all as an experimenter in multiple disciplines and various fields.

Chosen as a Best Book of 2017 by Publishers Weekly! Harrowing personal narratives describing how Mexican authorities disappeared, killed, and injured scores of students and others in a still-unsolved crime. "Journalist Gibler's investigative prowess yields a book that uses a chorus of voices—eyewitness accounts of the students and others at the scene—to add depth and clarity to the Sept. 26, 2014, massacre of students in the city of Iguala, Mexico, that left six people dead, 40 wounded, and 43 students missing who have yet to be seen since. It's an unforgettable reconstruction of a national tragedy."—Publishers Weekly, Best of 2017, Nonfiction "After nine months of intensive research for a book on the case of the forty-three, Gibler decided that 'what needs to be shared, urgently, are both the words and the storytelling of the people who lived through the attacks.' . . . The testimonies in I Couldn't Even Imagine That They Would Kill Us offer stunning evidence again and again that members of the army, as well as local and state police, helped carry out the attack."—The New York Review of Books " . . . valuable oral history . . ."—London Review of Books "In Mexico, John Gibler's book has been recognized as a journalistic masterpiece, an instant classic, and the most powerful indictment available of the devastating state crime committed against the 43 disappeared Ayotzinapa students in Iguala. This meticulous, choral recreation of the events of that night is brilliantly vivid and alive, it will terrify and inspire you and shatter your heart."—Francisco Goldman, writer for The New Yorker, author of The Interior Circuit: A Mexico City Chronicle On September 26, 2014, police in Iguala, Mexico attacked five busloads of students and a soccer team, killing six people and abducting forty-three students—now known as the Iguala 43—who have not been seen since. In a coordinated cover-up of the government's role in the massacre and forced disappearance, Mexican authorities tampered with evidence, tortured detainees, and thwarted international investigations. Within days of the atrocities, John Gibler traveled to the region and began reporting from the scene. Here he weaves the stories of survivors, eyewitnesses, and the parents of the disappeared into a tour de force of journalism, a heartbreaking account of events that reads with the momentum of a novel. A vital counter-narrative to state violence and impunity, the stories also offer a testament of hope from people who continue to demand accountability and justice. John Gibler lives and writes in Mexico. He is the author of Torn from the World, Mexico Unconquered: Chronicles of Power and Revolt, To Die in Mexico: Dispatches From Inside the Drug War, 20 poemas para ser leídos en una balacera, Tzompaxtle: La fuga de un guerrillero. His work on Ayotzinapa has been published in California Sunday Magazine, featured on NPR's "All Things Considered," and praised by The New Yorker.
