En Los siete locos, Arlt relata la historia de Remo Erdosain, un hombre que se encuentra desesperado ante la falta de dinero y que se lo acusa de estafar a la empresa donde trabaja. No sólo queda expuesto y humillado ante sus superiores, sino que además le dan un corto plazo para reponer el dinero. Pide un préstamo a su amigo Ergueta, pero este se niega a ayudarlo. Lo mismo Barsut, primo de su mujer. Entonces, ante la desesperación, decide acudir al Astrólogo, en cuya casa conoce a Haffner, el Rufián Melancólico, tratante de blancas que le presta finalmente el dinero. Lo que desconoce Erdosain es que en ese instante formará parte de una sociedad secreta con serias intenciones de cambiar el orden social por medio de una sangrienta revolución.
