El fenómeno del sueño fue un elemento central de las sociedades medievales y del Antiguo Regimen, que creían que las experiencias oníricas poseían relevancia dentro de la colectividad. Si bien la interpretación individual de los signos e imágenes experimentados mientras dormimos existía, el mundo de los sueños era considerado como una realidad en tanto que en ellos se podían tener premoniciones, recibir enseñanzas morales y espirituales, mensajes de la divinidad o del demonio o advertencias sobre la conducta a seguir en un caso de terminado. Los acercamientos literarios al sueño cuentan con una larga tradición en el ámbito de los estudios europeos; en cuanto a los estudios culturales, que son más recientes, han dado ya importantes frutos. Sin embargo, en el caso de la América ibérica de los siglos XVI-XVIII, el campo de la cultura del sueño es un terreno casi inexplorado, salvo para Brasil, donde encontramos algunos trabajos pioneros. El presente volumen propone una reflexión sobre la experiencia onírica en la cultura colonial iberoamericana y pretende abrir pistas para futuros trabajos en este campo. Los autores de los doce trabajos aquí reunidos abordan tanto la dimensión político-social de los sueños como la religiosa, sin descuidar los aspectos estéticos y filosóficos, partiendo todos ellos de un enfoque compartido: los sueños como expresión del pensamiento y de la mentalidad de una época fundacional de la historia de América Latina. Esperamos que el presente volumen contribuya a una mejor comprensión de la formación de las sociedades surgidas como consecuencia de las conquistas y de su universo letrado.

How did Spanish-American writers and veterans in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century use epic poetry to search for ethical solutions to the violent conflicts of their age?Winner of the 2017-18 AHGBI-Spanish Embassy Publication Prize The Epic Mirror studies how Spanish-American writers and veterans in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century used epic poetry to search for ethical solutions to the violent conflicts of their age. The wars about which they wrote took place at the frontiers of the Spanish empire, where new political communities were emerging: fiercely independent Amerindian republics, rebellious Spanish settlers, maroon kingdoms of fugitive African slaves. This colonial reality generated a distinctive vision of just warfare and political community. Working across the fields of Hispanic literature, the history of political thought, and studies of empire, colonialism and globalisation, Choi reinterprets three major works of colonial Latin American literature: Alonso de Ercilla's La Araucana (1569-90), Pedro de Oña's Arauco domado (1596), and Juan de Miramontes Zuázola's Armas antárticas (1608-9). She argues that these works provide a rare insight into the development of political thought in Viceregal Peru. In Front Lines, Miguel Martínez documents the literary practices of imperial Spain's common soldiers. Against all odds, these Spanish soldiers produced, distributed, and consumed a remarkably innovative set of works on war that have been almost completely neglected in literary and historical scholarship. The soldiers of Italian garrisons and North African presidios, on colonial American frontiers and in the traveling military camps of northern Europe read and wrote epic poems, chronicles, ballads, pamphlets, and autobiographies—the stories of the very same wars in which they participated as rank-and-file fighters and witnesses. The vast network of agents and spaces articulated around the military institutions of an ever-expanding and struggling Spanish empire facilitated the global circulation of these textual materials, creating a soldierly republic of letters that bridged the Old and the many New Worlds of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Martínez asserts that these writing soldiers played a key role in the shaping of Renaissance literary culture, which for its part gave to them the language and forms with which to question received notions of the social logic of warfare, the ethics of violence, and the legitimacy of imperial aggression. Soldierly writing often voiced criticism of established hierarchies and exploitative working conditions, forging solidarities among the troops that often led to mutiny and massive desertion. It is the perspective of these soldiers that grounds Front Lines, a cultural history of Spain's imperial wars as told by the common men who fought them.

The corpus of literary works shaped by the Renaissance and the Baroque that appeared in Spain during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries had a transforming effect on writing throughout Europe and left a rich legacy that scholars continue to explore. For four decades after the Spanish Civil War the study of this literature flourished in Great Britain and Ireland, where many of the leading scholars in the field were based. Though this particular 'Golden Age' was followed by a decline for many years, there have recently been signs of a significant revival. The present book seeks to showcase the latest research of established and younger colleagues from Great Britain and Ireland on the Spanish Golden Age. It falls into four sections, in each of which works by particular authors are examined in detail: prose (Miguel de Cervantes, Francisco de Quevedo, Baltasar Gracian), poetry (The Count of Salinas, Luis de Gongora, Pedro Soto de Rojas), drama (Cervantes, Calderon, Lope de Vega), and colonial writing (Bernardo Balbuena, Hernando Dominguez Camargo, Alonso de Ercilla). There are essays also on more general themes (the motif of poetry as manna; rehearsals on the Golden Age stage; proposals put to viceroys on governing Spanish Naples). The essays, taken together, offer a representative sample of current scholarship in England, Scotland, and Ireland.

Conceptions of Dreaming from Homer to 1800 traces the history of ideas about dreaming during the period when the admonitory dream was the main focus of learned interest—from the Homeric epics through the Renaissance—and the period when it began to become a secondary focus—the eighteenth century. The book also considers the two most important dream theorists at the turn of the twentieth century, Sigmund Freud and Sante de Sanctis. While Freud is concerned with questions of what a dream means and how to interpret it, de Sanctis offers a synthesis of nineteenth-century research into what a dream is and represents the Enlightenment transition from particular facts to general laws.

A inicios de 1596, salía de las prensas de Antonio Ricardo en Lima el primer poema épico escrito por un criollo americano: el Arauco domado de Pedro de Oña. La publicación produjo reacciones desiguales: ingenios peninsulares y americanos alabaron (y aun imitaron) al entonces llamado “Apolo nuevo”, mientras que vecinos de las ciudades de Quito y Lima, así como autoridades civiles y eclesiásticas del virreinato, llevaron a cabo una férrea persecución de la obra que derivó en la confiscación de buena parte de los ejemplares impresos. El presente volumen reflexiona en torno a la censura de obras poéticas en América colonial a partir del examen de este caso particular. La edición filológica del expediente completo está a cargo de Manuel Contreras Seitz. Los estudios de Raúl Marrero-Fente, Pedro Guibovich, Francisco Burdiles, José Antonio Mazzotti y Sarissa Carneiro abordan diversas aristas jurídicas, políticas, teológico-morales y literarias del proceso contra Oña y sus impresores. Todo ello permite reconstruir una escena de notable importancia para el archivo colonial.
