Este libro contiene uno de los textos que sin duda habrá que calificar como clásico de la historiografía regional sobre los trabajadores poblanos del siglo XIX. En efecto, su autor, Juan Carlos Grosso, nos ofrece un estudio notable sobre la situación de la clase obrera en la ciudad de Puebla, donde examina desde las condiciones de vida de los operarios fabriles hasta sus progresos en materia de auto-reconocimiento clasista, organización gremial y lucha reivindicativa. El ensayo en su conjunto es un bien logrado tableau, descriptivo y analítico a la vez, de un proletariado decimonónico angelopolitano, progresivamente dominado –dadas las características del desarrollo industrial en ese periodo– por los obreros textiles. En este ensayo, el autor muestra también su dominio de la metodología marxista y de su aplicación al estudio de estos temas históricos, hecho que nos permite una reflexión más completa sobre el desarrollo del proletariado poblano desde la perspectiva de su toma de conciencia de clase. Juan Carlos Grosso llegó a México a comienzos de 1976 y pocos meses después ingresó a laborar como investigador de tiempo completo en la entonces Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (UAP), adscrito al Centro de Investigaciones Históricas y Sociales (CIHS) del Instituto de Ciencias. Falleció en Buenos Aires en 1996, a la edad de 53 años. El texto que forma este libro, si bien tiene más de quince años de haber sido escrito por el profesor Grosso, permanecía inédito. La temática que contiene mantiene su vigencia, y su publicación constituye un pequeño homenaje a su memoria. Por su tema es, además un pertinente aporte a los propósitos de esta colección.

Es hecho afianzado en la historiografía liberal de México que la Sierra de Puebla contribuyó de forma significativa a la defensa de la República ante el peligro y en la construcción de una moderna nación liberal. ¿Cómo es posible que una topografía tan recóndita y laberíntica haya contribuido a la evolución política del país durante el tumultuoso siglo XIX? Este libro plantea dos explicaciones. La primera es la ubicación estratégica de la Sierra de Puebla, que preside la ruta entre la capital y Veracruz. Todos los interesados, extranjeros y nacionales, buscaron aliados en la Sierra Norte con el objeto de controlar dicha ruta. El segundo factor fue la compleja geografía étnica de la Sierra y el legado de autonomía comunitaria y seguridad en sí mismos. Y aunque la Sierra ofrecía a todos los interesados una posible reserva estratégica, fue un solo distrito el que contribuyó en mayor medida al éxito de la revolución liberal del siglo XIX. Apartada e inaccesible, Tetela de Ocampo fue el hogar de un presidente interino de la República, Juan Nepomuceno Méndez, de dos gobernadores de estado (Méndez y Juan C. Bonilla) y del cacique nahua Juan Francisco Lucas, Cuya influencia en la Sierra Madre Oriental, que se extiende de la sierra de Pahuatlán en el estado de Hidalgo a la sierra Zongolica en Veracruz, abarcó el periodo entre la revolución de Ayutla en 1854 y su muerte en febrero 1917. Ningún otro líder indígena desempeñó un papel tan notable en la formación del estado mexicano. Este libro indaga en los orígenes del patriotismo liberal de la Sierra e intenta explicar por qué los serranos desempeñaron un papel tan importante en la historia política del sureste de México durante el siglo XIX e inicios del XX, periodo abarcado por las tres grandes revoluciones mexicanas: la Independencia, la Reforma y la Revolución.

Una generación es un grupo de hombres y mujeres de la misma “ubicación social” que, nacidos simultáneamente a la vida histórica se ve “marcado” por cierto acontecimiento y sometido a lo largo de su vida a la serie de influjos que constituyen su secuela. Por eso toda generación tiene similares respuestas a los problemas sociales de su tiempo. En La ronda de las generaciones, el historiador Luis González y González hizo el recuento de las minorías dirigentes que influyeron en el destino de México de 1856 a 1958. En ese periodo, el autor distinguió a seis generaciones rectoras: la pléyade de la Reforma; la generación tuxtepecadora; la generación de los científicos; la generación azul, los revolucionarios de ahora, enemigos de toda ruptura, partidarios de un Estado fuerte, tutor de la vida nacional. La Universidad Virtual Alfonsina, complementó el cuadro anterior señalando la existencia de cinco generaciones anteriores a la de 1810. A partir de estos criterios generales, combinados con la idea de familias, se agrupa este ramillete biográfico, sólo que se han tomado en mayor cuenta las adhesiones políticas y militares, y también los procesos políticos y sociales que incidieron en la configuración de los protagonistas. Estos personajes no son de una sola pieza, transitan libremente por las aguas de la historia y sólo conseguimos atraparlos por instantes: Instantes en los que han sido significativos por su contribución, independencia o apoyo a la historia nacional.
