Renowned paleoartist John Gurche brings the traditional techniques of figure drawing and anatomical art to the portrayal of our hominin ancestors. The result is a visual record of the evolving human form that feels alive in a way no scientific illustration could match. While science provides an underpinning to Gurche’s art, his work’s primary purpose is to forge an aesthetic connection to the hominins that preceded us on Earth, capturing their humanity. With essays by leading authorities, Lost Anatomies carries the story of human evolution from apes and early hominins; to Australopithecus; to archaic Homo sapiens, including Homo erectus; to derived Homo sapiens, including Neanderthals and other species that are our most recent ancestors.

The human body in scientific and artistic representations Around 1800 anatomy as a discipline rose to scientific prominence as it undergirded the Paris-centred clinical revolution in medicine. Although classical anatomy gradually lost ground in the following centuries in favor of new disciplines based on microscopic analysis, general anatomy nevertheless remained pivotal in the teaching of medicine. Corpses, anatomical preparations, models, and drawings were used more intensively than ever before. Moreover, anatomy received new forms of public visibility. Through public exhibitions and lectures in museums and fairgrounds, anatomy became part of general education and secured a place in popular imagination. As such, the anatomical body developed into a production site for racial, gender, and class identities. Both within the medical and the public sphere, art and science continued to be closely intertwined in anatomical representations of the body. Bodies Beyond Borders analyzes the notion of circulation in anatomy. Following anatomy through different locations and cultural domains permits a deeper understanding of its history and its changing place in society. The essays in this collection focus on a wide variety of circulating ideas and objects, ranging from models and body parts to illustrations and texts. Together, the essays enable rethinking the relations between metropolis and colony, university and fairground, and scientific and artistic representations of the human body. Excerpt from A System of Human Anatomy: General and Special The favourable reception which my recent Work on Practical and Surgical Anatomy has received, both from the Profession and the Press, commands my first attention and grateful remembrance on again presenting myself to public notice as an aspirant for honours in the field of Medical Science. On the present occasion, I submit the Anatomist's Vade Mecum to the Members of the Profession, with the fullest assurance that they will find it to be a complete system of descriptive Anatomy, recording in its pages, in a clear, precise, and perspicuous style of expression, every important detail of human structure, and the most modern and valuable discoveries and researches in the Science of Anatomy. To the established practitioner it is a matter of great importance that he should be possessed of the means, during the few spare hours which he can abstract from his anxious and responsible duties, of easily and agreeably refreshing his acquaintance with that science which is the acknowledged basis of all safe and skilful medical practice. Of this application of my present labours I have not been unmindful, in composing the Anatomist's Vade Mecum; and I sincerely trust that the work will prove to be the instructive and interesting companion of his important practical avocations. The Student of Medicine, from the first moment of commencing his labours in the study of Anatomy, must be made aware of the absolute necessity that exists for clearness of thought, exactness of language, and a rigorous arrangement of ideas. In centuries past, sexual body-parts and same-sex desire were unmentionables debarred from polite conversation and printed discourse. Yet one scientific discipline-anatomy-had license to represent and narrate the intimate details of the human body-anus and genitals included. Figured within the frame of an anatomical plate, presentations of dissected bodies and body-parts were often soberly technical. But just as often monstrous, provocative, flirtatious, theatrical, beautiful, and even sensual. Queer Anatomies explores overlooked examples of erotic expression within 18th and 19th-century anatomical imagery. It uncovers the subtle eroticism of certain anatomical illustrations, and the queerness of the men who made, used and collected them. As a foundational subject for physicians, surgeons and artists in 18th- and 19th-century Europe, anatomy was a privileged, male-dominated domain. Artistic and medical competence depended on a deep knowledge of anatomy and offered cultural legitimacy, healing authority, and aesthetic discernment to those who practiced it. The anatomical image could serve as a virtual queer space, a private or shared closet, or a men's club. Serious anatomical subjects were charged with erotic, often homoerotic, undertones. Taking brilliant works by Gautier Dagoty, William Cheselden, and Joseph Maclise, and many others, Queer Anatomies assembles a lost archive of queer expression-115 illustrations, in full-colour reproduction-that range from images of nudes, dissected bodies, penises, vaginas, rectums, hands, faces, and skin, to scenes of male viewers gazing upon works of art governed by anatomical principles. Yet the men who produced and savored illustrated anatomies were reticent, closeted. Diving into these textual and representational spaces via essayistic reflection, Queer Anatomies decodes their words and images, even their silences. With a range of close readings and comparison of key images, this book unearths the connections between medical history, connoisseurship, queer studies, and art history and the understudied relationship between anatomy and desire.
