Drifting on in this way, they had come to within a mile of Ile Haute, and had an opportunity of inspecting the place which Tom had declared to be so gloomy. In truth, Tom's judgment was not undeserved. Ile Haute arose like a solid, unbroken rock out of the deep waters of the Bay of Fundy, its sides precipitous, and scarred by tempest, and shattered by frost. On its summit were trees, at its base lay masses of rock that had fallen. The low tide disclosed here, as at the base of Blomidon, a vast growth of black seaweed, which covered all that rocky shore. The upper end of the island, which was nearest them, was lower, however, and went down sloping to the shore, forming a place where a landing could easily be effected. From this shore mud flats extended into the water. "This end looks as though it had been cleared," said Bart. "I believe it was," said the captain. "Does anybody live here?" "No." "Did anyone ever live here?" "Yes, once. . . ." So don't wait! Scroll up and buy now.

Some critics claim that Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, published in 1870, is Jules Verne’s masterpiece. The novel is narrated by Professor Pierre Aronnax of the Paris Museum of Natural History. It is set in the year 1866 (Verne was already working on the manuscript at that time) and the world of the sea is in the news with the supposed sightings of a sea monster that is much too large and fast to be a whale. When a boat is damaged, apparently by the sea monster, Aronnax, while on a researching assignment in New York is asked by the United States government to help track down the monster. Aronnax (illustrations of Aronnax in the original edition look very much like Verne) takes his loyal Belgian valet (Conseil) with him – both Aronnax and Conseil are men of science – cool, rational, and possessing encyclopaedic knowledge of the sea. Ned Land serves as their foil – a passionate and foolhardy harpooner from Canada. This annotated edition includes a biography and critical essay.

A true story of an American woman arrested, tried, convicted, and sentenced to hang for the murder of her British husband. In its day, it was one of the most sensational cases of the 19th century. Here, Florence Maybrick tells of the horror and devastation of being separated from her children, thrown into solitary confinement, and struggling to maintain sanity. For fifteen years she struggled to hang on and gained a remarkable set of supporters on both sides of the Atlantic, including Lincoln's former secretary (later Secretary of State) John Hay. Queen Victoria herself was apprised of the proceedings, as was U.S. Ambassador to Britain, Robert Todd Lincoln. Mrs. Maybrick relates the saga of her ordeal and her final emancipation. She made an eloquent and impassioned appeal for prison reform. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones.
