أحدثت التطورات التكنولوجية تأثيرًا واضحًا في مختلف جوانب صناعة الصحف واقتصادياتها وإدارة مؤسساتها، حيث شهدت صناعة الصحافة تحولات جذرية في مفاهيم العمل ونظم الإدارة وسياسات غرف الأخبار وأساليب تنظيمها، وأنماط القيادة داخلها، سواء بسبب الضغوط الاقتصادية وزيادة توجه المؤسسات نحو آليات السوق، أو بسبب الضغوط والتحديات التي فرضتها الثورة التكنولوجية الراهنة، وهو ما أدى إلى سيادة توجه نظري بات يحكم المدارس الأكاديمية، مؤداه انقراض صناعة الصحافة التقليدية لصالح الصحافة الإلكترونية بتطبيقاتها المختلفة. ولا شك أن هناك تعاونًا يجب أن يحدث بين الصحافة والمتلقين، خاصة مع تلك الأزمة التي تواجه الصحافة الورقية، بعد تصاعد دور الصحافة الإلكترونية، وأن كثيرًا من المؤسسات فشلت في عملية الدمج بين المحتويات. ونتيجة التغيرات المتلاحقة في صناعة الصحافة، أخذت إدارة الصحف بإعادة هيكلة طريقة إدارة عملها، وقد اتخذت إعادة الهيكلة هذه عدة اتجاهات على الصعيد العالمي، بحسب السوق، والطريقة التي تتعامل بها مع هذه التحديات. وتعاني الصحف في الوقت الراهن ليس فقط من أزمة غياب المُعلِن، إنما أزمة على مستوى تنويع مصادر الدخل لتلك المؤسسة الصحفية، وإن كان هذا التنويع على مستوى مصادر الدخل حاضرًا في بعض المؤسسات الصحفية إلا أن معظم الصحف تعاني من غياب عقلية تقرأ مستقبل الإعلام بشكل حقيقي، فهي تحتاج إلى عقلية استثمارية مختلفة، لا يعنيها فقط الاستثمار على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي وغيرها، إنما استثمار مختلف بمعنى إبداعي وحقيقي يخلق أُفقًا جديدًا. وقد يكون من الأفضل للمؤسسات أن تعزز مواقعها الإلكترونية، وتسلك في ذلك سبيل الصحافة العالمية النابهة التي تنمو بصورة سريعة إلكترونيًّا في مقابل استمرار هبوط توزيعها الورقي، والجانب الآخر هو ضرورة الاعتناء بالمضمون؛ حيث تستطيع الصحف أن تواكب الحدث محليًّا وعالميًّا من خلال موقعها الإلكتروني. إن التوجهات الحديثة في صناعة الصحافة المعاصرة هي التركيز على الصحافة الاستقصائية، والتحول نحو التخصص بالمعنى الجغرافي والموضوعي، وكذلك الاستثمار في الإعلام الجديد من خلال دمج المنصات وغرف الأخبار، فقد تسارعت وتيرة الاستثمارات بشكل مفاجئ في مشاريع الإعلام الإلكتروني، حيث يتزاحم المستثمرون على ضخ أموالهم في مشاريع إعلامية على الإنترنت، بالتزامن مع عزوفهم بشكل تدريجي عن الإعلام التقليدي.
