"It's a dangerous little county you got here, Sheriff."Two brutal crimes a hundred miles apart, one the murder of a controversial singer in a small West Texas town and the other an assault on two journalists in nearby Big Bend National Park. What might the incidents have in common? Nothing-and everything. Once again, it's up to Sheriff Clayton Shoot and Professor Claire Harp to pluck out the heart of this Big Bend Country mystery-third in the series that began with The Window Trail.

This collection of writings and images by the legendary Big Bend photographer offers adventure, history, personal musings, and natural beauty. Photographer-naturalist Peter Koch first visited Big Bend National Park in February, 1945, on assignment to take promotional pictures for the National Park Service. He planned to spend a couple of weeks, and ended up staying for the rest of his life. Koch’s magnificent photographs and documentary films introduced the park to people across the United States and remain an invaluable visual record of the first four decades of Big Bend National Park. In this book, Koch’s daughter June Cooper Price draws on her father’s photographs, newspaper columns, and journal entries, as well as short pieces by other family members, to present his vision and many experiences of the Big Bend. The adventure begins with a six-day photographic trip through Santa Elena Canyon on a raft made from agave flower stalks. Koch also describes hiking on mountain trails and driving the scenic loop around Fort Davis; “wax smuggling” and other ways of making a living on the Mexican border; ranching in the Big Bend; collaborating with botanist Barton Warnock; and the history and beauty of Presidio County, the Rio Grande, and the Chihuahuan Desert.

A place of merging natural environments, Big Bend National Park is the perfect photographic subject. Desert, river valley, mountain, and plain, are all captured beautifully by photographers Guynes and Reynolds. All seasons of the year are presented, as the terrain is cast in new light in each. From broad scenics of the Rio Grande to close-ups of unusual flora of the region, from shots of the sprawling badlands to images of desert wildlife, the magic of Big Bend National Park is presented skillfully by these two talented photographers.

It has been described as a rich and varied land of history, myth and legend, danger, ghost, rugged landscapes, aridity, remoteness, spectacular vistas, and wildlife that either bite, sting, or clawed. Located in the "Far West" geographic region of Texas - a subdivision of West Texas, and running along the border with Mexico, north of the prominent northward bend in the Rio Grande passing through the gap between the Chisos Mountains in Texas and the Sierra Madre Oriental in Mexico, hanging south of U.S. Highway 90 and west of the Pecos River. Townships in the region include Alpine, Presidio, Marfa, Sanderson, and Marathon. The Big Bend is part of the Chihuahuan Desert that straddles the U.S.-Mexico border, the second largest desert in North American. The area is sparsely populated, arid, and rugged, containing the Chisos and the Davis Mountain ranges, the region has more than one million acres (4,000 km²) of public lands, including Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park along the north side of the Rio Grande. It is also the home of the McDonald Observatory. The Big Bend has been visited or settled by Indians, Spanish Explorers, Mexicans, Anglo Ranchers, outlaws of every stripe, and the United States Military, Each of these cultures has left a legacy in this fascinating country, and much of it has to do with the wealth associated with lost mines and buried treasures. The twenty-two tales included in this book are spellbinding accounts of some of the most exciting and mysterious lost treasures to be found in North America, represent many millions of dollars worth of gold, silver, jewels, coin, and currency that are still searched for today.
