Lost to the Sea: Norfolk & Suffolk relates the stories of how the human communities along the coast of these counties maintained their struggle with the sea. From very early Neolithic times, when global changes created the Continental Shelf and raised the cliffs along Britain's eastern shorelines, through Roman and medieval times, the first villages and towns were gradually established, only to be faced with the problem of the sea's incursions onto agricultural land. In the 1950s, Rowland Parker's classic study of Dunwich, a key town of Suffolk engulfed, set the scene for a long-standing interest in how the sea's challenge has been met. There have been successes and failures, and Stephen Wade tells the story of the seaside holiday towns and fishing communities that have had to struggle for survival. In this book, the reader will find stories of the people involved in this titanic effort through the centuries. The narrative moves down the coast from Hunstanton to Southwold, tracing the losses and the gains, not only in measurements of land, but in the tough human experience of that environmental history.

William Faden And Norfolk S Eighteenth Century Landscape written by Andrew Macnair and has been published by Windgather Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-08-24 with History categories.

William Faden's map of Norfolk, published in 1797, was one of a large number of surveys of English counties produced in the second half of the eighteenth century. This book, with accompanying DVD, presents a new digital version of the map, and explains how this can be interrogated to produce a wealth of new historical information. It discusses the making of the Norfolk map, and Faden's own career, within the wider context of the eighteenth-century "cartographic revolution". It explores what the map, and others like it, can tell us about contemporary social and economic geography. But it also shows how, carefully examined, the map can also inform us about the development of the Norfolk landscape in much more remote periods of time. The book includes a digital version of the map, on DVD. Andrew Macnair is Research Fellow at the School of History in the University of East Anglia; Tom Williamson is Professor of History and Head of the Landscape Group at the University of East Anglia.

This innovative study employs digitisation techniques and GIS technology to coax a wealth of significant new information from an important eighteenth-century map; William Faden's survey of Norfolk, published in 1797. It sets the map, and its maker, firmly in their historical context. It also shows how - when combined with other datasets - interrogation of the various patterns and distributions which it shows can cast a shaft of new light on the development of the Norfolk landscape many centuries before the map was surveyed, as well as telling us a great deal about the contemporary, late-eighteenth century landscape, and how this was understood, exploited and experienced. The book includes a digital version of the map, on DVD. --Book Jacket.

"The authors consider the siting of 'thorps' and 'throps' in relation to the landscape and to soil types in particular. Amply demonstrating the value of an interdisciplinary approach to the study of early medieval settlement in England, the authors are able to draw important conclusions about the changes in farming that swept the country during this period and by association the process of village nucleation. By examining both the chronology of place-names in 'thorp' and 'throp' and their qualifying elements (notably the presence or absence of personal names), it appears possible to chart both the speed at which arable enterprises farmed in severalty converted to communal cultivation as well as the direction in which the changes spread. There is a sense of real excitement as many fresh insights are revealed in the course of the book"--P. [4] of cover.
