Mysterious Lost Objects explores the intriguing world of items vanished from history, examining their impact on our understanding of the past. From lost treasures to vanished inventions and missing artifacts, the book investigates the circumstances surrounding their disappearance and the void they've left in our collective knowledge. One might be surprised to learn about the Amber Room, a chamber of unparalleled beauty that disappeared during World War II, or the secrets behind Damascus steel, a metalworking technique lost to time. These disappearances prompt us to question established narratives and re-evaluate historical assumptions. The book delves into three core themes, starting with lost treasures like Confederate gold, then shifting to vanished inventions such as Greek Fire, and finally analyzing missing artifacts like the Ark of the Covenant. Each section explores the historical context, known whereabouts, and theories surrounding their disappearances. By drawing upon historical sources, archaeological findings, and technological analyses, Mysterious Lost Objects offers a unique lens through which to examine human history and highlights the enduring fascination with things that are missing.

Mysterious Missing Objects explores the captivating realm of history's unexplained disappearances, focusing on lost treasures, missing manuscripts, and vanished artifacts. These irretrievable losses reveal intriguing insights into human nature and the fragility of cultural heritage. Consider the Florentine Diamond, a treasure sparking relentless searches, or the lost scrolls of Alexandria, whose absence potentially erased entire chapters of history. The book uniquely blends History with True Crime, appealing to those fascinated by historical investigations and unsolved mysteries. The book progresses methodically, first introducing the concept of ""irretrievable loss"" and the motivations behind the pursuit of these objects. It then presents detailed case studies, drawing upon historical records and archaeological findings to investigate disappearances like that of the Ark of the Covenant. Finally, it analyzes the broader implications of these losses, considering their impact on historical narratives and ethical considerations surrounding their potential recovery. Through rigorous research and a multi-faceted perspective incorporating forensic science and criminology, Mysterious Missing Objects offers a comprehensive yet accessible overview. It acknowledges the limitations of available information, presenting different viewpoints on controversies surrounding ownership and authenticity. The book invites readers to contemplate the profound impact of what is no longer there, making it valuable for anyone interested in history, archaeology, or the pursuit of missing objects.

Freud S Jaw And Other Lost Objects written by Lana Lin and has been published by Fordham Univ Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-07 with Social Science categories.

What does it mean to live with life-threatening illness? How does one respond to loss? Freud’s Jaw and Other Lost Objects attempts to answer these questions and, as such, illuminates the vulnerabilities of the human body and how human beings suffer harm. In particular, it examines how cancer disrupts feelings of bodily integrity and agency. Employing psychoanalytic theory and literary analysis, Lana Lin tracks three exemplary figures, psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, poet Audre Lorde, and literary and queer theorist Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick. Freud’s sixteen-year ordeal with a prosthetic jaw, the result of oral cancer, demonstrates the powers and failures of prosthetic objects in warding off physical and psychic fragmentation. Lorde’s life writing reveals how losing a breast to cancer is experienced as yet another attack directed toward her racially and sexually vilified body. Sedgwick’s memoir and breast cancer advice column negotiate her morbidity by disseminating a public discourse of love and pedagogy. Lin concludes with an analysis of reparative efforts at the rival Freud Museums in London and Vienna. The disassembled Freudian archive, like the subjectivities-in-dissolution upon which the book focuses, shows how the labor of integration is tethered to persistent discontinuities. Freud’s Jaw asks what are the psychic effects of surviving in proximity to one’s mortality, and it suggests that violences stemming from social, cultural, and biological environments condition the burden of such injury. Drawing on psychoanalyst Melanie Klein’s concept of “reparation,” wherein constructive forces are harnessed to repair damage to internal psychic objects, Lin proposes that the prospect of imminent destruction paradoxically incites creativity. The afflicted are obliged to devise means to reinstate, at least temporarily, their destabilized physical and psychic unity through creative, reparative projects of love and writing.

Lost Objects written by Joshua Glenn and has been published by Hat & Beard Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-08 with Art categories.

Is there a "Rosebud" object in your past? A long-vanished thing that lingers in your memory--whether you want it to or not? As much as we may treasure the stuff we own, perhaps just as significant are the objects we have, in one way or another, lost. What is it about these bygone objects? Why do they continue to haunt us long after they've vanished from our lives? In Lost Objects, editors Joshua Glenn and Rob Walker have gathered answers to those questions in the form of 50 true stories from a dazzling roster of writers, artists, thinkers, and storytellers, including Lucy Sante, Ben Katchor, Lydia Millet, Neil LaBute, Laura Lippman, Geoff Manaugh, Paola Antonelli, Margaret Wertheim, and many more. Each spins a unique narrative that tells a personal tale, and dives into the meaning of objects that remain present to us emotionally, even after they have physically disappeared. To bring this collection of essays even more vividly to life, the editors gathered a similarly impressive array of artists to illustrate these meaningful things that have gone missing. Visual contributors include Seth, Kate Bingaman-Burt, Oliver Munday, Lisa Congdon, Matt Wuerker, Anita Kunz, Alex Eben Meyer, Gary Panter, and Kelli Anderson. Glenn and Walker began Lost Objects following the success of Significant Objects, a project-turned-book collecting fictional stories inspired by thrift store finds. With Lost Objects, they have shifted to nonfiction narratives in their continuing exploration of objects and meaning. Supplemented by additional analyses from the editors and an original foreword from noted design writer Debbie Millman, the book combines evocative storytelling, art, and design, rewarding deep readers and visual thinkers alike. We have all lost something that was meaningful--and that we'll never forget. While we may never recover this Rosebud, Lost Objects will teach us something new about why it mattered in the first place, and matters still.

"All the important moral ideas of the modern world are based on the key biblical verses analyzed in this collection. What generally happens when someone picks up a copy of the Bible? Often it is put down within seconds because readers see endless verses which turn them off. Finally, here is an accessible book about the Bible that focuses on its great moral principles: --Human beings are created in the image of God. --""Love your neighbor as yourself."" --""You shall not stand idly by the blood of your neighbor."" --""You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might."" --""Justice, justice shall you pursue."" Dov Peretz Elkins believes that if a reader understands fifty verses of the five thousand in the Bible (only 1 percent), he or she will begin to grasp the essence of the Bible. This remarkable explanation of the Bible shows readers how it can serve as a light that illuminates a path through the confusion and problems in their personal and communal lives. The result is a life that is better and more serious--a life with meaning, purpose, and direction. The Bible's Top 50 Ideas: --Presents the Bible's essential ideas in readable, engaging fashion. --Focuses on the contemporary value of the Bible. --Uses commentaries and explanations from sources that are modern as well as ancient, Christian as well as Jewish, and popular as well as scholarly. Elkins not only simplifies the Bible but also demonstrates how its fundamental ideas and concepts have inspired four thousand years of civilization to follow its teachings. The result is a moral, legal, and literary foundation that remains the basis of all democratic and principled societies to this day. "
