This publication sets out the report of the re-opened formal investigation into the loss of FV Gaul, a fishing trawler last seen off the Norwegian coast in February 1974, resulting in the loss of its 36 crewmen. The original formal inquiry concluded that the vessel had foundered and capsized, without making any distress calls, after being battered by heavy seas. The report is divided into two sections. The first part includes: a brief historical account of the loss of FV Gaul, and the concerns surrounding its loss; the vessel's design features, the regulatory measures in place at the time it was built and its service history; the experience of its skipper and crew; a detailed account of its last voyage and the search and investigation undertaken after it went down; and examination of concerns that its loss was due to involvement in espionage activities during the Cold War, including evidence from two members of the Security Services. The second section looks at: the findings of the maritime accident investigation undertaken in 1998 and the underwater survey undertaken in 2002, including technology used; examination of possible theories to explain the cause of the loss, including whether the vessel was fishing at the time of the loss, whether a snagged submarine cable could have caused the incident, and the prevailing weather and sea conditions. The report concludes that it is probable FV Gaul capsized amid heavy seas, when water ran down open waste chutes and flooded its lower decks, rapidly disabling the crew who were subsequently unable to send a distress call. The report, therefore, rules out other explanations for the loss of the vessel such as collision, seizure by the Russians or any other hostile force, or being pulled down by a submarine due to a snagged fishing net.

In the harsh Arctic seas of 1968, three trawlers from Hull's fleet sank in just three weeks. 58 men died. Lilian Bilocca put down her filleting knife, wrote a petition, and stormed into action. With her army of fishwives she took her battle to the docks and led a raid on Parliament. They changed the shipping laws. Lillian Bilocca became an international celebrity. The lone survivor of the tragedies made headlines too. In a tight fishing community, it's dangerous to stand out.

Saturnine and quick-tempered, the formidable North Sea is often overlooked – even by those living within a stone's throw of its steel-grey waters. But as playground, theatre of war and cultural crossing-point, it has shaped the world in myriad ways, forged villains and heroes, and determined the fates of nations. It's not all grim, though: the seaside holiday was born on North Sea beaches, and artists, poets and writers have been as equally inspired by glinting sun on the wave-tops as they have the drama of a winter storm. With a wry eye and a warm coat, Tom Blass travels the edges of the North Sea meeting fishermen, artists, bomb disposal experts, burgermeisters – and those who have found themselves flung to the sea's perimeters quite by chance. In doing so he attempts to piece together its manifold histories and to reveal truths, half-truths and fictions otherwise submerged...

Having survived Borneo, Amazonia, and the Congo, the indefatigable Redmond O’Hanlon sets off on his next adventure: his own perfect storm, in the wild waters off the northern tip of Scotland. Equipped with a fancy Nikon, an excessive supply of socks, and no seamanship whatsoever, O’Hanlon joins the commercial fishing crew of the Norlantean, a deep-sea trawler, to stock a bottomless hull with their catch, even as a hurricane roars around them. Rich in oceanography, marine biology, and uproarious humor, Trawler is Redmond O’Hanlon at his finest.
