This informative first-time translation of the autobiography of Pierre-Clement de Laussat (1756-1835), offers a portrait of the middle-man in the transaction of 1803 which gave the United States the Louisiana territory. The life of this 'transfer agent' reads like a novel amply detailed with the love, pride, ambition, and courage that drove him to make a mark on history. Appointed by Napoleon in 1803 as Colonial Prefect for Louisiana and Commissioner General, Pierre-Clement de Laussat negotiated the cession of the Louisiana Territory to France from Spain and fended off the danger of foreign occupation and internal insurrections threatening Louisiana during the interim of the switch of control by the countries involved. It was he who represented France at the ceremonies of cession of Louisiana on December 20, 1803 and who received the French flag when it was lowered in Jackson Square to be replaced by the American colors. And it was he who continued to maintain peace in the newly-acquired territory until William C. Claiborn assumed governship for the United States. Translated with an introduction by Sister Agnes-Josephine Pastwa. Compiled by Sister Joan LaVerne Rutz.

A New York Times Bestseller! The fascinating story of how four great men fought for the Louisiana Purchase, changing the future of our nation. Jefferson's Great Gamble tells the incredible story of how four leaders of an upstart nation—Jefferson, Madison, Monroe and Livingston—risked the future of their country and their own careers; outwitted Napoleon Bonaparte, the world's most powerful ruler; and secured a new future for the United States of America. For two years before the Louisiana Purchase, the nine principal players in the deal watched France and the United States approach the brink of war over the most coveted spot on the planet: a bustling port known as New Orleans. And until the breakthrough moment when a deal was secured, the men who steered their countries through the tense and often beguiling negotiations knew only that the futures of both nations were at stake. Jefferson's Great Gamble is an extraordinary work that redefines one of the most important and overlooked events in American history. To read Jefferson's Great Gamble is to experience the tense days and nights leading to a decision that changed the face of the world. From the early American infighting to the heated French negotiations to the battle needed years later to secure the purchase, this new history is a story of dedicated men, each driven by love of country, who created an event that Robert Livingston called "the noblest work of our lives."

Excerpt from Documentary History of the Cession of Louisiana to the United States Till It Became an American Province: With an Appendix At a time when the political conditions of Europe and America were evanescent, when the heart of the American Continent wax in the germ cell, then fortuitous circumstances came up unexpectedly to decide an issue that involved the destinies of the United States, and the men capable of giving directions to these political issues were brought into the arena to solve them. Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of the Independence of the United States, and Napoleon Bonaparte, the supreme ruler of France, were the two great actors for their countries respectively. Robert Livingston, who had been one of the committee to formulate the Declaration of American Independence, and James Monroe, destined to a world wide fame as the author of the Monroe doctrine, were the actors under Jefferson on the part of the United States, and Barbe Marbois, a great and farseeing statesman, on the part of France. In the following pages the immense work which these remarkable men accomplished will be told as briefly and plainly as the facts can be stated without omitting any link in its chain. To this end much pains has been taken to obtain official records, and here it is but just that I acknowledge obligations to Henry Vignaud, Secretary to Hon. Horace Porter, our present Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to France, for searching among the archives of a hundred years back to secure for me a facsimile of the autograph of Marbois, taken directly from the original treaty. The appendix of this work contains a brief outline history of the American acquisition of Oregon, made possible by the purchase of Louisiana; also the history of other foreign acquisitions to the United States since that time. Amazing and exciting, as romantic as it is realistic and historically authentic, THE BONAPARTES IN AMERICA was the first published work to contain in one volume all available material, much of it newly discovered by them, on every member of the Bonaparte family that lived in the United States or was connected in any way with the country. Dr. Macartney, distinguished historian, former head of the Presbyterian Church in the United States, and Major Dorrance, author and publisher, roamed afar in their quest of new and important material. Research in the British Museum, and special trips through France and to Corsica, to mention but a few, went into their book of old romance, which was first published on the 100th anniversary of the former King Joseph Bonaparte’s final return to Europe from the United States. This one famous and colorful family has placed a great if hitherto little known part in the building of America, our native land. THE BONAPARTES IN AMERICA contains fascinating chapters on Jerome Bonaparte and Elizabeth Patterson; Charles J. Bonaparte of Baltimore; Joseph Bonaparte at Philadelphia, Bordentown, New Jersey, and Lake Bonaparte New York; the Murats of Florida; Napoleon III in New York City; Napoleon III and Mexico; The Napoleonic Exiles in Alabama; Texas and the Champ d’Asile; Marshal Ney and North Carolina; Napoleon and the Louisiana Purchase; Napoleon’s American Son in California; and American Plots to Rescue Napoleon from St. Helena. THE. BONAPARTES IN AMERICA is beautifully illustrated with old portraits and engravings, including pictures of Napoleon, Jerome and Elizabeth. Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte. Charles J. Bonaparte, Joseph Bonaparte, Joseph’s I Philadelphia home, “Point Breeze” and Bonaparte I park at Bordentown, Lake Bonaparte, Prince and Princess Achille Murat, Napoleon III, Letizia Bonaparte, mother of Napoleon, John Gordon Bonaparte of San Francisco and the Napoleon House at New Orleans.
