In this story, the author denounces religious fanaticism, assassins, attacks, intolerance, hypocrisy and even a total incomprehension of Islam. A religion that preaches peace and not violence. Generally speaking, violence is inherent in human nature. It takes a commendable effort to suppress it. Our father Adam had two sons: one killed the other. Monotheistic religions strive to neutralize tendencies towards violence through patience, piety and love of neighbor. The author portrays here a realistic and sometimes picturesque image of the life of a people he loves, plunged into the chaos of history, with its violence and dangers, its hopes and passions. Little by little, the truth and exactitude of the details, the non-documentary precision, A religion that preaches peace and not violence.

Wilson R. Bachelor was a Tennessee native who moved with his family to Franklin County, Arkansas, in 1870. A country doctor and natural philosopher, Bachelor was impelled to chronicle his life from 1870 to 1902, documenting the family's move to Arkansas, their settling a farm in Franklin County, and Bachelor's medical practice. Bachelor was an avid reader with wide-ranging interests in literature, science, nature, politics, and religion, and he became a self-professed freethinker in the 1870s. He was driven by a concept he called "fiat flux," an awareness of the "rapid flight of time" that motivated him to treat the people around him and the world itself as precious and fleeting. He wrote occasional pieces for a local newspaper, bringing his unusually enlightened perspectives to the subjects of women's rights, capital punishment, the role of religion in politics, and the domination of the American political system by economic elite in the 1890s. These essays, along with family letters and the original diary entries, are included here for an uncommon glimpse into the life of a country doctor in nineteenth-century Arkansas.

"As gripping and twisted as a James Ellroy novel." - Ian Rankin "A masterpiece of literary biography." - David Peace The first critical biography of a titan of American crime fiction. Love Me Fierce In Danger is the story of James Ellroy, one of the most provocative and singular figures in American literature. The so-called “Demon Dog of Crime Fiction,” Ellroy enjoys a celebrity status and notoriety that few authors can match. However, traumas from the past have shadowed his literary success. When Ellroy was ten years old, his mother was brutally murdered. The crime went unsolved, and her death marked the start of a long and turbulent road for Ellroy that has included struggles with alcoholism, drug addiction, homelessness, and jail time. In tracing his life and career, Steven Powell reveals how Ellroy's upbringing in LA, always on the periphery of Hollywood, had a profound and dark influence on his work as a novelist. Using new sources, Powell also uncovers Ellroy's family secrets, including the mysterious first marriage of his mother Jean Ellroy, eighteen years before her murder. At its heart, Love Me Fierce in Danger is the story of how Ellroy overcame his demons to become the bestselling and celebrated author of such classics as The Black Dahlia and LA Confidential. Informed by interviews with friends, family, peers, and literary and Hollywood collaborators, as well as extensive conversations with Ellroy himself, Love Me Fierce In Danger pulls back the curtain on an enigmatic figure who has courted acclaim and controversy with equal zealotry.

"This scientific-historical biography explores the influences that shaped the spirituality of Amy Carmichael of Dohnavur. J. (Hans) Kommers investigates the historical background of Amy's childhood in Millisle and Belfast and provides new and more scholarly information than existing biographies. He researched a variety of Keswick-related literature in order to provide a fuller picture of Amy's connection with the Keswick Convention and their teaching. The descriptions of the life of the millworkers in Belfast, the happenings on the worldwide stage and Victorian missionary work and methods round out the picture to give the reader a greater understanding of Amy Carmichael. These new facts are most enlightening." --Dr Jackuelin Woolcock MB BChir MRCP (Lond), Director Dohnavur Fellowship Corporation, Shoreham by Sea, UK, and Doctor in Dohnavur India 1969-1987 "Triumphant Love: The Contextual, Creative and Strategic Missionary Work of Amy Beatrice Carmichael in South India provides the msot extensive biography thus far of Amy Carmichael (1867-1951), a major figure on the missionary landscape of the late 19th and the first half of the 20th century. She is seen by some as the Protestant mother Teresa (both women worked in India and devoted all of their time and energy to the poor). The book is very well researched. The author states that the purpose of the extensive research he undertook 'was to get a closer and clearer picture of Amy Carmichael as the founder off the Dohnavur Fellowship.' Also, he wanted 'to give a balanced account of her dealings with people and especially her life with God.' He does this. It provides the most comprehensive picture of this remarkable woman. It is the definitive source of reference. J. (Hans) Kommers's view of the life of Amy Carmichael is that of a fellow evangelical. He explains that not only Amy, but many missionaries of her time were inspired by the ideal that all people should have the opportunity to hear of Christ's salvation. According to him, her inspirational work is still relevant today." --Prof. Dr Gijsbert van den Brink, URC Professor for Theology and Science, Faculty of Theology, Free University Amsterdam, the Netherlands

History Of Psychology Through Symbols written by James Broderick and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-15 with Psychology categories.

Volume One of The History of Psychology through Symbols provides a groundbreaking approach by expanding the roots of psychology beyond the Greeks to concurrent events during the same period (800 BCE–200 BCE), defined as the Axial Age by German-Swiss psychiatrist Karl Jaspers. The Axial Age emphasized seeking the universal connection that unites all humanity, a focus not on what one believed, but how one lived. This includes the human desire to connect to something greater, the totality of being human, explained by using symbols, the universal language. This volume describes the psychological implications of the Axial Age through the developments of Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism, Daoism, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism, as well as Greek thought. Rooted in the Axial Age, Volume One explores how the Christian and Islamic eras influenced psychology, which resulted in the Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution, which provided the historic roots of modern psychology. Rejecting the idea that science transcends historical events, this volume provides a political, socioeconomic, and cultural context for all the historic developments. The chapter on the history of mental illness provides inspiration for a new mental health system with specific recommendations for radical system reform. In the spirit of the Axial Age on the importance of how one lives, there is an emphasis on engagement with symbols and with specific exercises, called emancipatory opportunities, to apply the lessons of psychological history to daily life. This book is ideal for those seeking a dynamic and engaging way of learning about or teaching the history of psychology and would also be of interest to students, practitioners, and scholars of science, philosophy, history and systems, religious studies, art, and mental health and drug and alcohol treatment, as well as those interested in applying the lessons of history to daily life.

The Ultimate Religion written by Gillian Dance and has been published by Independently Published this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-26 with categories.

The Ultimate Religion is an exploration of a fundamentalist church, its members and their interpretation of the bible, via the story of one woman. This book will resonate in particular with those who have experience of such 'churches' or who wish to understand the mentality of people who lead and join such organisations. The novel is inspired by real-life events, recounting true sentiments and experiences. The story follows the child, Megan, through a tumultuous upbringing and early religious experiences, into adulthood and the point when she falls into the company of a fundamentalist Christian group and becomes embroiled in their contradictory world of genuine miracles, fun and love; coupled with religious fanaticism, gross sexism and social control. With an open approach to some difficult topics, such as abuse, terminal illness and gender roles, some content may be contentious or painful to read. Eye-opening biblical scriptures are quoted to illustrate the basis for some of the characters' beliefs. This is a story of the making and breaking of precious friendships, of one woman's desire to find and understand her place in the world, healing for her past and a sense of self and purpose; and the price of that quest. Megan finds faith, loses it and rediscovers it, while experiencing the duality of others and eventually discovering the true source of miracles.
