In the novel, Thomas and Sarah are two people who are experiencing the dying process. They do not know that they have died and left their bodies, and that they are on their way to meet God. The tunnel that they are traveling in, appears to them as a train. They are sitting next to each other. Thomas has just finished writing a book about God, which he hopes to publish; but, Sarah has lived her life denying God's existence. God, in his mercy, wishes to grant Sarah one final chance to except him. Thomas and Sarah spend their time on the train discussing God, and Thomas tries to help her to accept God, his love, and his mercy. In their discussion, Thomas reveals the insights that are contained in his unpublished book. Will they help just this one person, Sarah, to find her way home?
