In 1942, a bewildered six-year-old Joan Crabb and her siblings find themselves wards of the Loyal True Blue and Orange Orphanage in Richmond Hill, Ontario. For seven challenging years, they support one another through the strong bonds of familial love, until at the age of thirteen, Joan and the other Crabb children are taken in by Bill and Grace, a warm and welcoming farm couple, who model and teach the unconditional love of parents. These invaluable life lessons are tested, however, when Joan and her siblings are blindsided, plucked away from Bill and Grace, and taken to Nova Scotia, into the custody of the biological father they have never known. After Joan falls in love and begins her own ever-increasing family in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, it is apparent that her childhood has gifted her with a huge heart for children in need of a mother’s love. She devotes her life to her many biological, adopted and foster children, but at the heart of Joan’s legacy lies a unique bond with a beautiful special-needs child—Chrissy. Written by a loving daughter, Joanie delivers a lively, entertaining, and incredibly moving account of the joys, triumphs, and tragedies of a life that some might see as ordinary; revealing how incredibly and completely extraordinary it truly was.

An addictive and moving debut about love, fidelity, sports, and growing up when you least expect it, told through the irresistible voices of three generations It's the spring of 1994 in Cooperstown, New York, and Joanie Cole, the beloved matriarch of the Obermeyer family, has unexpectedly died in her sleep. Now, for the first time, three generations are living together under one roof and are quickly encroaching on one another's fragile orbits. Eighty-six-year-old Bob Cole is adrift in his daughter's house without his wife. Anne Obermeyer is increasingly suspicious of her husband, Hugh's, late nights and missed dinners, and Hugh, principal of the town's preschool, is terrified that a scandal at school will erupt and devastate his life. Fifteen-year-old tennis-team hopeful Julia is caught in a love triangle with Sam and Carl, her would-be teammates and two best friends, while her brother, Teddy, the star pitcher of Cooperstown High, will soon catch sight of something that will change his family forever. At the heart of the Obermeyers' present-day tremors is the scandal of The Sex Cure, a thinly veiled roman à clef from the 1960s, which shook the small village of Cooperstown to the core. When Anne discovers a battered copy underneath her parents' old mattress, the Obermeyers cannot escape the family secrets that come rushing to the surface. With its heartbreaking insight into the messy imperfections of family, love, and growing up, Callie Wright's Love All is an irresistible comic story of coming-of-age—at any age.

The Powers Metaphysic written by Neil E. Williams and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-12 with Philosophy categories.

Systematic metaphysics is defined by its task of solving metaphysical problems through the repeated application of single, fundamental ontology. The dominant contemporary metaphysic is that of neo-Humeanism, built on a static ontology typified by its rejection of basic causal and modal features. This book offers a radically distinct metaphysic, one that turns the status quo on its head. Starting with a foundational ontology of inherently causal properties known as 'powers', Neil E. Williams develops a metaphysic that appeals to powers in explanations of causation, persistence, laws, and modality. Powers are properties that have their causal natures internal to them: they are responsible for the effects in the world. A unique account of powers is advanced, one that understands this internal nature in terms of blueprint of potential interaction types. After the presentation of the powers ontology, Williams offers solutions to broad metaphysical puzzles, some of which take on different forms in light of the new tools that are available. The defence of the ontology comes from the virtues of metaphysic it can be used to develop. Particular attention is paid to the problems of causation and persistence, simultaneously solving them as is casts them in a new light. The resultant powers metaphysic is offered as a systematic alternative to neo-Humeanism.

After the Second World War, the rural outskirts of Suburbia became America's newest Frontier. Millions left the urban centers of the nation for a new life, away from the smog, noise and expense of big-city living. Among those mid-century pioneers were Joanie and Ted Plouviez. In 1956, Joanie and Ted staked out their suburban homestead in the new village of Lindenhurst, Illinois, where they raised their two ""Boomer"" daughters. No stranger to country life, Ted makes the transition easily. But for Joanie, born and raised in Chicago, the joy of finding an affordable home soon gives way to a desperate longing for the family, culture and convenience of the city she left behind. As she struggles to maintain her house, her children and her sanity in a neighborhood where she feels like an ""odd duck,"" Joanie still clings stubbornly to her city roots, relating her travails - and her triumphs - in letters to her Ma and Pa back in Chicago.

She will also be on a 27-city U.S. tour starting July 2009.. • A musical force and a catalyst for social change: At the age of eighteen Baez was an international star with a Time magazine cover story; fifty years later she has thirty-three albums to her credit. She also marched alongside Martin Luther King, Jr., was jailed for supporting the draft resistance, and sang in the first Amnesty International tour. An extraordinary woman who has led an eventful life, Baez’s memoir is as honest, unpretentious, and courageous as she is. .

New York Times Notable Book: A “beautifully written” memoir by the daughter of the brilliant, troubled poet (Detroit Free Press). This is an honest, unsparing account of the anguish and fierce love that bound a difficult mother and the daughter she left behind. Linda Sexton was twenty–one when her mother killed herself, and now she looks back, remembers, and tries to come to terms with her mother’s life. Growing up with Anne Sexton was a wild mixture of suicidal depression and manic happiness, inappropriate behavior and midnight trips to the psychiatric ward. Anne taught Linda how to write, how to see, how to imagine—and only Linda could have written a book that captures so vividly the intimate details and lingering emotions of their life together. Searching for Mercy Street speaks to everyone who admires Anne Sexton and to every daughter or son who knows the pain of an imperfect childhood. “Sexton forcefully communicates the fear, repulsion, neediness, and sorrow that filled her childhood, as well as the agony of her own mental breakdown and her terror of becoming like her mother, in lucid and vivid prose.” —The Boston Globe “A candid, often painful depiction of a daughter’s struggles to come to terms with her powerful and emotionally troubled mother.” —The New York Times

Bob Fosse (19271987), the director and choreographer of Chicago and Sweet Charity, has never been more popular than he is right now. Here is the less-publicized side of his story-his surprising ascent from the world of sleazy Chicago strip joints to the glitter of Broadway. A legend's memory is preserved in this eloquent biography.
