It can be about love of country, of a people or nation. It can be about love of ideals such as freedom and peace. Poetry can be rhymed or written in one of many recognized forms of poetry (such as a Sonnet). It can be unrhymed and follow no uniform pattern. In any topic or form, love poetry can be written by making images for the reader and then moving from image to image to express the writer’s chosen feelings and ideas. Love poetry can be inspired by experiences, the classics, legends, heroic figures, patriotism, personal ideals or even the works of other poets. The first step is to understand what love poetry is: a way to relate feelings to the art of words. It is the skillful use of words to bring ideas about feelings and emotions to a reader. One important skill is to be able to capture an image. This should be done in as few words as possible; it can also be done very effectively at the beginning of the write such as in the opening lines or first stanza. Love can mean many things in addition to romantic love: love of a place, a people, a nation; it can be love of people for various reasons. Relationships, friendships, and family are examples of love of this kind. There are unique and special bonds of love between parent and child. All of these forms of love can be the subject of a love poem. Once the image is captured there are choices for the writer to make: to rhyme, use a poetry form; use free verse, use images, or develop a metaphor so that some few words will stand for something much larger in scope. Other forms of poetry are song lyrics, Rap, and spoken poetry. These all have in common the idea of combining rhythm and words. These are even more special talents, to do blend music and/or rhythms into poetry. About the Expert Howard D. Moore is a Government Relations Consultant and writer. He was educated at Howard University and the Georgetown University School of Law. His career has included work in the U.S. Government (the U.S. Congress, the Executive Office of the President, Office of Management and Budget, and several Federal Departments). These poems and short stories are arranged in chronological order as they were inspired by a long-term love affair and written from 1989 to 2007. For the perceptive reader one can trace the ups and downs of our relationship. These 18 years were filled with love and passion. Perhaps it was fantasy; perhaps it was the most real thing we will ever experience. These inspired poems were written mostly during the first ten years. As it became obvious that my dream would never come true, the inspiration dwindled and fewer poems were written in later years. The heartbreaking part of this 18 year love affair is that I am not sure my lover ever really understood or appreciated my unconditional deep love for her. I opened my heart to her through poetry, but I never knew what was in her heart. Perhaps it was a one-sided love affair, but I think and hope not. I was convinced that she loved me through her words and actions. At least I experienced a love that I had only dreamed possible. Each image carefully placed in this book carries a very special meaning for the poem and for our love journey. Even the clock photo carries a meaning related to the untimely death of US. Each word is carefully chosen to convey my feelings. While I tried to express my love in poetic words, there was an enormous amount left unsaid. I can only hope you find meaning and joy in the thoughts and feelings these words convey to you. A fuller story of this passionate love affair will be unfolded in an upcoming book.

Can poetry articulate something about love that philosophy cannot? The Form of Love argues that it can. In close readings of seven “metaphysical” poems, the book shows how poets of the early modern period and beyond use poetic form to turn philosophy to other ends, in order not to represent the truth about love but to create a virtual experience of love, in all its guises. The Form of Love shows how verse creates love that can’t exist without poetry’s specific affordances, and how poems can, in their impossibility, prompt love’s radical re-imagining. Like the philosophies on which they draw, metaphysical poems imagine love as an intense form of non-sovereignty, of giving up control. They even imagine love as a liberating bondage—to a friend, a beloved, a saint, a God, or a garden. Yet these poems create strange, striking versions of such love, made in, rather than through, the devices, structures, and forces where love appears. Tracing how poems think, Kuzner argues, requires an intimate form of reading: close—even too close—attention to and thinking with the text. Showing how poetry thinks of love otherwise than other fields, the book reveals how poetry and philosophy can nevertheless enter into a relation that is itself like love.
