Loneliness, as old as time itself, is not easy to define. It's a bit like love -- you know when you feel it, but cannot specifically define it. However, no one who ever walked on the face of this earth has gone through life without experiencing the pain of being lonely, alienated, and feeling unconnected to others, unloved, or even rejected. Although we, in the 21st century, pride ourselves as inventors [the Internet, computers, reaching the moon, and biomedical advances] we did not invent this one -- loneliness was here way before any of us, and consequently we can find it mentioned in the Bible, literature, art, and philosophy. And, as things appear now -- it is here to stay. In addition to addressing loneliness, its causes, and how it affects our health, well-being, and quality of life, we also discuss what loneliness anxiety is, and the difference between loneliness and depression, for those two may go together, but are actually different. While loneliness is inescapable, it does not mean that when we experience or feel it 'coming' that we just wait and embrace the pain until 'it' decides to leave us. People have developed various ways of coping with loneliness; learning to either avoid or better cope with it. This book lists a variety of successful methods to reduce the pain of loneliness, and in some ways, to reduce the probability of it happening.

Learning To Love written by Thomas Merton and has been published by Harper Collins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-19 with Religion categories.

Having embraced a life of solitude in his own hermitage, Thomas Merton finds his faith tested beyond his imagination when a visit to the hospital leads to a clandestine affair of the heart. Jolted out of his comfortable routine, Merton is forced to reassess his need for love and his commitment to celibacy and the monastic vocation. This astonishing volume traces Merton's struggle to reconcile his unexpected love with his sacred vows while continuing to grapple with the burning social issues of the day—including racial conflicts, the war in Vietnam, and the Arab-Israeli conflict—visiting and corresponding with high-profile friends like Thich Nhat Hanh and Joan Baez, and further developing his writing career. Revealing Merton to be 'very human' in his chronicles of the ecstasy and torment of being in love, Learning to Love comes full circle as Merton recommits himself completely and more deeply to his vocation even as he recognizes 'my need for love, my loneliness, my inner division, the struggle in which solitude is at once a problem and a 'solution'. And perhaps not a perfect solution either' (11 May, 1967).

Edith Irene Saodergran, one of the first modernist poets within Swedish-language literature, was born in St. Petersburg in 1892 and died in Raivola, a Finnish town near the Russian border, in 1923. Her first published poems were not well received by the conservative critics because of their free-verse style. At her death from tuberculosis, which she contracted as a teenager, she was thirty-one years old and known only within the narrow confines of the Swedish-speaking literary world; but after her death she became recognized and appreciated, and she is now considered one of the greatest poets in Swedish literature. Her poetry has been translated into some thirty languages and her passionate lyric voice continues to win new readers all over the world.

Story Of Love In Solitude written by Roger Lewinter and has been published by New Directions Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-25 with Fiction categories.

A notable discovery of a truly original voice Several stories inhabit Roger Lewinter’s first small book to appear in English, Story of Love in Solitude. Each story takes the form of a loop: a spider who won’t stop returning; camellias that flourish and then die; dying parents whose presence is always yet felt; turning again and again to work on Rilke translations; a younger man whom the narrator sees each week at the Geneva street markets. All the tales touch on the possibility, the open possibility of love—a loop without end. Lewinter’s short fictional works are at once prose poems and a form of dreaming; they are akin to the great French tradition of things sparking emotions and emotions sparking things—part Sarraute, part Robbe-Grillet, part Perec. Plot is not really the point of his meditative works. Lewinter concerns himself more with perception, apperception, and sudden inflections of grace: loss and beauty meet in an explosion of joy, which becomes, “in its brilliance, a means of transmittal.”

This innovative book provides a new conceptual analysis of loneliness – a condition associated with severe health consequences, including increased morbidity and early death. Arguing that social connection is not the only answer, it explores pathways for transforming loneliness to healthy solitude. The first part of the book draws on the humanities and arts, including psychology, philosophy, and literature to analyse the common, and potentially serious, problem of loneliness. It makes the case that the condition is less a deficiency than a state of self-disconnection that modernity feeds through social forces. The second part of the book looks at how person-centred health care can help educate persons to transform loneliness into healthy solitude. It provides an analysis of self-connection and spiritual connection, discussing how these forms of contact can mitigate risks associated with both lack of social connection, and social connection itself, such as self-disconnection and rejection by others. It goes on to demonstrate that connection to the self and spirit can make aloneness a resource and facilitate access to benefits of connecting with others. This thought-provoking book provides students, scholars, and practitioners from a range of health and social care backgrounds with a new way of thinking about, researching, and practising with lonely people.
