Una nebbia fitta, che rende ciechi, che assorbe ogni rumore e fa perdere l’orientamento. Ecco, a Innsmouth noi ci muoviamo in quella nebbia. Non sappiamo niente di ciò che vi si nasconde dentro. Intuiamo qualcosa. E quel qualcosa intuisce a sua volta la nostra presenza.» Prese la saliera e la posizionò a capotavola. «Questi siamo noi», spiegò. «Per trovare ciò che cerchiamo dobbiamo avanzare in quella foschia.» Spostò la saliera in avanti. Poi mise un bicchiere nel centro. «Questa è Innsmouth. Quella vera. È tutto ciò che noi possiamo vedere. Ma è anche ciò che gli altri possono vedere.» Posizionò il contenitore del pepe all’altro capo della tavola. «Ecco, questi sono… loro. Noi avanziamo in mezzo alla nebbia, verso Innsmouth. Ma naturalmente così facendo potremmo finire per segnalare la nostra posizione. Allora forse sarebbe più saggio rimanere fermi.» Riportò la saliera al punto di partenza. «Ma anche questa scelta non è priva di pericoli. Rimanendo fermi saremmo un bersaglio facile da inquadrare. E allora forse sarebbero loro ad attraversare quella nebbia per raggiungerci.» Assistetti inquieto alla marcia del pepe verso di noi. Scese il silenzio. La superficie del tavolo sembrava veramente svaporare in una caligine indistinta. Dovetti sbattere due o tre volte le palpebre per fugare quella sensazione.

Weird - romanzo breve (97 pagine) - Uno dei racconti più iconici di Lovecraft nella versione originale fornita da S.T. Joshi, che presenta più di qualche differenza con le redazioni più note. Una storia ricca di personaggi ormai entrati nel mito. Il protagonista, Robert Olmstead, arriva in quel di Innsmouth alla ricerca di scorci architettonici pregevoli e, suo malgrado, si trova coinvolto in un viaggio a ritroso che lo porterà a scoprire l’esistenza di una razza che vive sotto il mare da sempre. Lovecraft descrive sapientemente la fuga precipitosa da Innsmouth, la scelta dei verbi non è mai casuale e ha un doppio senso che si comprende pienamente solo alla fine del racconto. Racconto che presenta personaggi ormai entrati nel mito come il gentile e ingenuo Commesso dell’emporio, il terribile Obed Marsh e il misterioso Zadok Allen. Howard Phillips Lovecraft è il padre assoluto del genere weird. Non c’è molto altro da aggiungere. Nato a Providence il 20 agosto del 1890 e morto a Providence il 15 marzo del 1937 ebbe una vita breve, leggermente diversa da come è stata strumentalmente presentata nel corso dei decenni. Basti dire che Lovecraft amava viaggiare, amava il caldo e che soggiornò per mesi in Florida, visitò Key West e che sognava di andare a Rio de Janeiro e all’Avana. Non è mai stato un eremita, come si è raccontato soprattutto negli anni settanta, se non causa di forza maggiore. Le opere di H.P. Lovecraft hanno influenzato tutta la letteratura dell’orrore venuta dopo di lui, pertanto è decisamente complicato elencare le sue opere migliori. Il Richiamo di Cthulhu, Dagon o L’Ombra su Innsmouth sono i racconti più aderenti a questa collana, ma molti altri suoi capolavori – come Il Caso di Charles Dexter Ward, Il Modello Pickman, La Dichiarazione di Randolph, Alle Montagne della Follia e L’orrore di Dunwich – raggiungono vette a oggi ineguagliate.

The narrator finds Innsmouth to be a mostly deserted fishing town, full of dilapidated buildings and people who walk with a distinctive shambling gait and have "queer narrow heads with flat noses and bulgy, stary eyes". The only person in town who appears normal is a grocery store clerk from neighboring Arkham. The narrator gathers much information from the clerk, including a map of the town and the name of Zadok Allen, an elderly local who might give him information when plied with drink. The narrator hears repeatedly that outsiders are never welcomed in Innsmouth, and that strangers, particularly government investigators, have disappeared when they pry too deeply into the town.The narrator meets Zadok, who explains that an Innsmouth merchant named Obed Marsh discovered a race of fish-like humanoids known as the Deep Ones. When hard times fell on the town, Obed established a cult called the Esoteric Order of Dagon, which offered human sacrifices to the Deep Ones in exchange for wealth in the form of large fish hauls and unique jewelry. When Obed and his followers were arrested, the Deep Ones attacked the town and killed more than half of its population, leaving the survivors with no other choice than to continue Obed's practices. Male and female inhabitants were forced to breed with the Deep Ones, producing hybrid offspring which have the appearance of normal humans in early life but, in adulthood, slowly transform into Deep Ones themselves and leave the surface to live in ancient undersea cities for eternity. He further explains that these ocean-dwellers have designs on the surface world and have been planning the use of shoggoths to conquer or transform it. Zadok sees strange waves approaching the dock and tells the narrator that they have been seen, urging him to leave town immediately. The narrator is unnerved, but ultimately dismisses the story. Once he leaves, Zadok disappears and is never seen again.After being told that the bus is experiencing engine trouble, the narrator has no choice but to spend the night in a musty hotel, the Gilman House. While attempting to sleep, he hears noises at his door as if someone is trying to enter. Wasting no time, he escapes out a window and through the streets while a town-wide hunt for him occurs, forcing him at times to imitate the peculiar walk of the Innsmouth locals as he walks past search parties in the darkness. Eventually, he makes his way towards railroad tracks and hears a procession of Deep Ones passing in the road before him. Against his judgment, he opens his eyes to see the creatures and faints at his hiding spot....
