Superconductors have been known about since the turn ofthe century. Recently there has been a renewed interest with the discovery of the new, high-Tc materials since 1986[1]. These compounds become superconducting at much warmer temperatures than any pre viously known. In fact, many of tthem superconduct at temperatures above the boiling point of liquid nitrogen, making the observation of the transition both accessible and inexpensive. It was obvious immediately that these materials could have a tremendous technological impact, or lead to further materials with even higher transitions. For this reason there has been an intense effort by scientists in both academia and industry to study these materials. The scientificand industrial communitieshope to learn what makes these materials work. For, learning how these materials work not only increases mankind's overall knowledge of his world, but could make some person or company quite successful if the information were used and developed correctly.

This volume is an exciting collection of short review articles written by leading international experts on the superconducting state in magnetic fields, a rapidly developing area. The philosophy of the book is to emphasize the importance of having experimental and theoretical works side by side. Every effort has been made to match each experimental article with a corresponding theoretical article. The selection of materials includes special topics, new effects and new trends concerning superconductors in low and high magnetic fields. The special topics and new trends include quantum and classical melting of the vortex lattice, new vortex lattice symmetries, vortex core states, nonlinear Meissner effect, symmetry of the order parameter in high-temperature superconductors, and superconductors in high magnetic fields. The book is targeted at a broad audience, including graduate students, postdocs and other researchers active or interested in this field.

Considering the enormous progress achieved in some special areas of superconductivity during the last few years, it seemed worthwhile to discuss thoroughly a subject, which has encountered severe pro blems on the theoretical and the experimental side, namely the effects of the anisotropic electron and phonon properties of (single crystalline) materials on the characteristic features of the super conducting state. The fact that the majority of scientists actively engaged in this research field at present were brought together at the meeting, has led to an almost complete coverage of the pertinent topics in this volume. Six review papers discuss the development and the present state of theory and experiment concerning the anisotropies of the upper critical field and the magnetization as well as the flux line lattice and the superconducting energy gap. Furthermore, 18 papers present the most recent research on these properties and additional anisotropy effects associated with the intermediate state patterns or the specific heat. Concerning the magnetic properties, remarkable agreement between theory and experiment has been achieved; on the other hand, controversial views regarding the existence of anisotropy in the superconducting energy gap are presented. In both cases, how ever, theorists and experimentalists are still confronted with a number of open questions. It is the purpose of this book to draw the attention of scientists to these fascinating problems. Harald W.

Manipulating Anisotropic Transport And Superconductivity By Focused Ion Beam Microstructuring written by Maja D. Bachmann and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-08-28 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This thesis presents pioneering work in the relatively new field of focused ion beam (FIB) sculpting of single crystals to produce bespoke devices and enable the investigation of physics that cannot be studied in bulk samples. It begins with a comprehensive and didactic account of how to achieve this sculpting, revealing the ‘tricks of the trade’ of state-of-the-art FIB microstructuring. In subsequent chapters, the author presents ground-breaking results obtained from microstructures of the delafossite oxide metal PdCoO2 and the heavy fermion superconductor CeIrIn5. In these elegant, forefront experiments, a new form of directional ballistic transport in the ultra-pure delafossites is described and explained. Furthermore, a new way to spatially modulate superconductivity induced by strain is demonstrated with electrical transport measurements that agree well with predictions based on thermoelastic finite element simulations.

Unconventional Superconductors written by Iman Askerzade and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-13 with Science categories.

This book presents the anisotropy and multiband effects in newly discovered unconventional superconductors: cuprate superconductors, borocarbides, magnezium-diboride and oxypnictides. The physical properties of these unconventional superconductors and the application of the two-band Ginzburg-Landau theory to these superconducting compounds are explained. Temperature dependencies of fundamental superconducting parameters are calculated using the GL theory taking into account multiband-and anisotropy effects. A comparision of theoretical results and experimental data is conducted. Additionally, the analytical solution of the microscopical Eliashberg theory and of the BCS theory is developed for two-band and anisotropic superconductors. Fluctuation effects in newly discovered superconductors are also discussed.

Quasi One Dimensional Organic Superconductors written by Zhang Wei and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-22 with Science categories.

The book includes a thorough description of a wide range of physical properties of organic superconductors of reduced dimensionality. The authors start with an overview of the field followed by a background discussion and selected experimental topics. A critical discussion of theoretical proposals is presented under the constraints of experimental observations and exciting possibilities for the symmetry of the order parameter are presented, including the cases of inhomogeneous superconducting states and triplet superconductivity. The possible origins of Cooper pairing are explored and tests to detect experimentally the pairing symmetry are described in detail. The book ends with a discussion of important open questions, where the search for their answers will keep the field alive for the next decade.

Viscous Flux Motion In Anisotropic Type Ii Superconductors In Low Fields written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with categories.

The Bardeen-Stephen model of viscous flux motion in isotropic Type-II superconductors is extended to the anisotropic case characterized by a phenomenological effective mass tensor m{sub ij}. When the magnetic field is low and the vortex lines are aligned along one of the three principal axes, simple expressions for the viscosity tensor [eta]{sub ij} of the viscous flux motion are obtained as functions of m{sub ij} and the normal state conductivity tensor [sigma]{sub ij} for temperature T close to the critical temperature {Tc}. For the high-temperature oxide superconductors the theory predicts that [eta]{sub b}{sup (a)}:[eta]{sub b}{sup (c)}:[eta]{sub c}{sup (a)} ≈ 1:4[gamma]:3[gamma]2, where [eta]{sub i}{sup (j)} is the viscosity for the motion along the i-axis of a vortex parallel to the j-axis and [gamma] = √m{sub c}/m{sub a} is the anisotropy parameter (m{sub i}, i = a,b,c, are the principal values of the mass tensor satisfying m{sub a} ≈ m{sub b} {much lt} m{sub c}). 9 refs., 1 fig.

The Physics Of Superconductors written by Karl-Heinz Bennemann and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This is the first volume of a comprehensive two-volume treatise on superconductivity that represents the first such publication since the earlier work by R. Parks. It systematically reviews the basic physics and recent advances in the field. Leading researchers describe the state of the art in conventional phonon-induced superconductivity, high-Tc superconductivity, and novel superconductivity. After an introduction and historical overview, the leaders in the special fields of research give a comprehensive survey of the basics and the state of the art in chapters covering the entire field of superconductivity, including conventional and unconventional superconductors. Important new results are reported in a manner intended to stimulate further research. Numerous illustrations, diagrams and tables make this book especially useful as a reference work for students, teachers, and researchers. The second volume treats novel superconductors.
