NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD WINNER • This groundbreaking book offers the first global history of the loyalist exodus to Canada, the Caribbean, Sierra Leone, India, and beyond. At the end of the American Revolution, sixty thousand Americans loyal to the British cause fled the United States and became refugees throughout the British Empire. Liberty's Exiles tells their story. “A smart, deeply researched and elegantly written history.” —New York Times Book Review This surprising account of the founding of the United States and the shaping of the post-revolutionary world traces extraordinary journeys like the one of Elizabeth Johnston, a young mother from Georgia, who led her growing family to Britain, Jamaica, and Canada, questing for a home; black loyalists such as David George, who escaped from slavery in Virginia and went on to found Baptist congregations in Nova Scotia and Sierra Leone; and Mohawk Indian leader Joseph Brant, who tried to find autonomy for his people in Ontario. Ambitious, original, and personality-filled, this book is at once an intimate narrative history and a provocative analysis that changes how we see the revolution’s “losers” and their legacies.

Lord Germain was greatly pleased "to find the spirit of annoying the commerce of the King's Enemies" had increased among the Loyalists, and that their efforts had been attended with private benefit as well as public advantage.2 The direction of the whole enterprise was later entrusted to a board of directors, consisting of the principal loyalists from each American province. The officers who commanded the associated refugees were approved by this board, and commissioned by the British commander-in-chief. The latter furnished the shipping, as well as the arms and rations, and provided for the care of sick and wounded in the King's hospital. Captures made without the aid of the British regulars were shared by the refugees concerned.3 Their sailors were not to be impressed, and their prisoners were to be exchanged only for Loyalists. As concerned the object of their undertaking, the board "appealed to God who is the searcher of all hearts" to witness that they had no wish to prolong the horrors of war, but hoped to "emancipate the country from Republican tyranny." iRivingtoris Gazette, October 9, ...

"A fast-paced, often riveting account of the military and political events leading up to the Declaration of Independence and those that followed during the war ... Brands does his readers a service by reminding them that division, as much as unity, is central to the founding of our nation."—The Washington Post From best-selling historian and Pulitzer Prize finalist H. W. Brands comes a gripping, page-turning narrative of the American Revolution that shows it to be more than a fight against the British: it was also a violent battle among neighbors forced to choose sides, Loyalist or Patriot. What causes people to forsake their country and take arms against it? What prompts their neighbors, hardly distinguishable in station or success, to defend that country against the rebels? That is the question H. W. Brands answers in his powerful new history of the American Revolution. George Washington and Benjamin Franklin were the unlikeliest of rebels. Washington in the 1770s stood at the apex of Virginia society. Franklin was more successful still, having risen from humble origins to world fame. John Adams might have seemed a more obvious candidate for rebellion, being of cantankerous temperament. Even so, he revered the law. Yet all three men became rebels against the British Empire that fostered their success. Others in the same circle of family and friends chose differently. William Franklin might have been expected to join his father, Benjamin, in rebellion but remained loyal to the British. So did Thomas Hutchinson, a royal governor and friend of the Franklins, and Joseph Galloway, an early challenger to the Crown. They soon heard themselves denounced as traitors--for not having betrayed the country where they grew up. Native Americans and the enslaved were also forced to choose sides as civil war broke out around them. After the Revolution, the Patriots were cast as heroes and founding fathers while the Loyalists were relegated to bit parts best forgotten. Our First Civil War reminds us that before America could win its revolution against Britain, the Patriots had to win a bitter civil war against family, neighbors, and friends.

We wanted that sense, acknowledgement, and value of our own happiness, which all but we had; and we took pains to make, when we could not find ourselves miserable. The Consequences Of Loyalism written by Rebecca Brannon and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with American loyalists categories.

Scholars build on Calhoon's work and consider Loyalism's relationship to conflict resolution, imperial bureaucracy, and identity creation Since the 1970s scholars have regarded Robert M. Calhoon as an invigorating and definitive force when it comes to the study of American Loyalism. His decades-long work redefined the Loyalists' role in the American Revolution from being portrayed as static characters opposing change to being seen eventually as reactionary actors adapting to a society in upheaval. Loyalists were central to the Revolution, and Calhoon and these authors argue that they were not so different in ideology from their Patriot neighbors--except occasionally when they were. The Consequences of Loyalism, Rebecca Brannon and Joseph S. Moore seek to provide an understanding of Calhoon's foundational influence and the development continuing in the wake of his prolific career. This volume unites sixteen previously unpublished essays that build on Calhoon's work and consider Loyalism's relationship to conflict resolution, imperial bureaucracy, and identity creation. In the first of two sections, established and rising scholars discuss the complexities of Loyalist identity, while considering Calhoon's earlier work. In the second section, scholars work from Calhoon's later publications to investigate Loyalism in terms of the consequences of Loyalism for the Loyalists, and for the legacy of the Revolutionary War. The Consequences of Loyalism offers a bold, new reinterpretation of Loyalism. This book brings Loyalist dilemmas alive, digging into their personalities and postwar routes. The essays discuss not only Loyalists' experiences during the Revolution, but also their coping and even reintegration in the aftermath. Loyalists from all facets of society fought for what they considered their home country: women wrote letters, commanders took to the battlefield, and thinkers shaped the political conversation. This volume complements Calhoon's influential work, expands the scope of Loyalist studies, and opens the field to a deeper, perhaps revolutionary understanding of the king's men.

"It was a dangerous time to be loyal to the Crown. The divisive war had pitted neighbour against neighbour and father against son." This book will be especially fascinating for all readers interested in: history, biography, and life as a Loyalist in the Maritimes. The life of young Christiana Margaret Davis, a Loyalist born in upstate New York, was turned upside down by the American Revolution. A time of struggle and strife, she escaped with her family to Nova Scotia, finally landing on Brier Island in 1789. Her remarkable story sheds new light on the plight of Loyalists.
