This guidance manual is intended to help public water systems (PWSs) comply with the disinfection profiling and benchmarking requirements of the Long Term 1 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT1ESWTR). The requirements of the LT1ESWTR apply to PWSs that: Serve fewer than 10,000 people; and, are classified as either surface water or ground water under the direct influence of surface water (GWUDI). This manual explains disinfection profiling and benchmarking, discusses when and why they are necessary, and provides guidance as to how to compile a disinfection profile and how to calculate the benchmark. This guidance manual also discusses how systems and States may use these data to make decisions about disinfection practices.

The public health impact of foodborne disease in both the developed and developing world is high. Foodborne illness is a major cause of disease and some infections can be fatal. With the rise of globalisation, trends towards minimal processing, and changes in food consumption patterns, the food industry, food safety agencies, and public health officials must coordinate their activities to monitor the interactions between foodborne pathogens and food consumers. This important collection reviews vital issues in the relationship between consumers and foodborne bacteria, viruses and parasites, and surveys how interactions between microorganisms and their human hosts influence foodborne disease. Part one considers factors which increase the risk of exposure to foodborne hazards, exploring issues such as the demographics of our changing population and trends in agricultural management. Part two examines human host factors which influence foodborne disease. It includes chapters on non-specific host defences, immunity to foodborne pathogens and heightened susceptibility to foodborne disease due to underlying illness or pregnancy. The final part of the book reviews the mechanisms used by numerous pathogenic agents to invade, evade, colonise and reproduce in the human host. Quantitative microbiological risk assessment (QMRA), essential for the protection of public health, is also covered. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, Food consumption and disease risk: consumer-pathogen interactions will be an essential reference for microbiologists, R&D and QA staff in the food industry. Considers factors that increase the risk of exposure to foodborne hazards Examines the human factors that influence disease Distinguished editor and international team of contributors

Written by a team of international experts, this third edition designed to guide public health personnel or teams in any country that investigates reports of alleged waterborne illnesses. The manual is based on epidemiologic principles and investigative techniques that have been found effective in determining causal factors of disease incidence. The guidelines are presented in the sequence usually followed during investigations and are organized so that an investigator can easily find the information needed in any phase of an investigation. The book services as a guide to: • Develop a waterborne disease surveillance and emergency operations program • Handle illness alerts and water-related complaints that may be related to illness • Interview ill persons, those at risk, and controls • Develop a case definition • Transport water specimens and clinical specimens • Trace sources of contamination • Identify factors responsible for contamination, survival of pathogenic microorganisms or toxic substances, and/or propagation of pathogens • Collate and interpret collected data • Report information about the outbreak This edition has been extensively updated. A section has been added on water not intended for drinking as a source of illness. The chapter on “collection and analysis of data” has been significantly expanded to explain how data is collected and used to suggest possible vehicles, routes, and agents. The book is designed to improve the quality of investigation of outbreaks and disease surveillance. The International Association for Food Protection is a non-profit association of food safety professionals. Dedicated to the life-long educational needs of its Members, IAFP provides Members with an information network through its two scientific journals (Food Protection Trends and Journal of Food Protection), its educational Annual Meeting, international meetings and symposia along with international interaction between food safety professionals.

Guidance Manual For Coagulant Changeover written by James DeWolfe and has been published by American Water Works Association this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Science categories.

This manual is a source document for utilities that are considering a coagulant changeover. It is intended to provide an appreciation of what must be considered for a successful changeover based on the input of U.S. and Canadian utilities (Chapters 1 and 6). New regulatory requirements will likely have the broadest and most substantial impact on primary coagulant use (Chapter 3). The Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (IESWTR) and Stage 1 Disinfectant and Disinfection Byproducts Rule (Stage 1 DBPR) will make finished water requirements more stringent to address microbial removal and the impacts of disinfection. Enhanced Coagulation and/or other operational and treatment practices will be used to achieve these requirements. The science of coagulation (Chapter 4) requires a special focus to address the intricacies of coagulation chemistry. The manual provides a step-by-step methodology to conduct a coagulant changeover using a detailed protocol (Chapter 5) -- background, executive summary.

Originating in the armed forces of the early 20th century, weapons based on chemical, biological or nuclear agents have become an everpresent threat that has not vanished after the end of the cold war. Since the technology to produce these agents is nowadays available to many countries and organizations, including those with terrorist aims, civil authorities across the world need to prepare against incidents involving these agents and train their personnel accordingly. As an introductory text on NBC CBRN weapons and agents, this book leads the reader from the scientific basics to the current threats and strategies to prepare against them. After an introductory part on the history of NBC CBRN weapons and their international control, the three classes of nuclear/radiological, biological, and chemical weapons are introduced, focusing on agents and delivery vehicles. Current methods for the rapid detection of NBC CBRN agents are introduced, and the principles of physical protection of humans and structures are explained. The final parts addresses more general issues of risk management, preparedness and response management, as the set of tools that authorities and civil services will be needed in a future CBRN scenario as well as the likely future scenarios that authorities and civil services will be faced with in the coming years. This book is a must-have for Health Officers, Public Health Agencies, and Military Authorities.
