ORIGIN OF THE NAME BARTHOLOMEW. Bartholomew is the English form of the Syriac name of the apostle Bartholmai, which is derived from Bar, the Syriac term, as Ben is the Hebrew, for son; see Psalms ii, 12, translated "Kim the Son;" and Tholmai or Talmai (the same in Hebrew) is often found in the Old Testament, see Numbers xiii, 22; Joshua xv, 14; 2 Samuel iii, 3 and Chronicles xiii, 37, as Talmai. Its signification is "furrowed" from a Hebrew root meaning "to furrow" or "cut." The process by which Bartholmai or Bartalmai in Hebrew becomes Bartholomew in English, is through the regular Greek and Latin forms Bartholonmeos and Bartholommus, the second o being an intercalation, thence possibly through the French. The Latin ae being treated as a simple ē, as in all the other Romance languages.

Josh Henneha has always been a traveler, drowning in dreams, burning with desires. As a young boy growing up within the Muskogee Creek Nation in rural Oklahoma, Josh experiences a yearning for something he cannot tame. Quiet and skinny and shy, he feels out of place, at once inflamed and ashamed by his attraction to other boys. Driven by a need to understand himself and his history, Josh struggles to reconcile the conflicting voices he hearsÑfrom the messages of sin and scorn of the non-Indian Christian churches his parents attend in order to assimilate, to the powerful stories of his older Creek relatives, which have been the center of his upbringing, memory, and ongoing experience. In his fevered and passionate dreams, Josh catches a glimpse of something that makes the Muskogee Creek world come alive. Lifted by his great-aunt LucilleÕs tales of her own wild girlhood, Josh learns to fly back through time, to relive his peopleÕs history, and uncover a hidden legacy of triumphs and betrayals, ceremonies and secrets he can forge into a new sense of himself. When as a man, Josh rediscovers the boyhood friend who first stirred his desires, he realizes a transcendent love that helps take him even deeper into the Creek world he has explored all along in his imagination. Interweaving past and present, history and story, explicit realism and dreamlike visions, Craig WomackÕs Drowning in Fire explores a young manÕs journey to understand his cultural and sexual identity within a framework drawn from the community of his origins. A groundbreaking and provocative coming-of-age story, Drowning in Fire is a vividly realized novel by an impressive literary talent.

In 1837, the Pattersons of Reeds Crossing are eager to head north to Indiana where they can claim new land and begin farming. Brady Pattersons wife, Anna Marie, along with their children and their friends, Pricilla and Jeremiah, make the difficult journey by covered wagons. They endure challenging weather conditions, mosquitos, and varmints as they travel northward, but they successfully reach their new home. The children, Pat and Tim, grow into teenagers, while other children are added to the family dynamics. One day, a runaway slave family is discovered hiding on the family farm. The Pattersons acceptance of the family causes ripples throughout the community, and that acceptance brings about violence. Tim loves racing his horse and teasing Pricillas daughter. His daring ways often bring him harm. Pat turns eighteen years old and meets a girl who captures his heart. They fall in love, but as time passes, her father is unwilling to let them continue seeing each other. Pat sees no other resolve than to leave home and strike out on his own. A sequel to Sunset in Kentucky, Daybreak in Indiana tells the story of how a community becomes a town full of good people who help their friends and comfort those who mourn.
