Questo libro è l'esito, criticamente rivisto e aggiornato, della ricerca sviluppata tra il 1994 ed il 1997 all'interno del Dottorato di Ricerca dalle Facoltà consorziate di Palermo, Bari, Napoli, Reggio Calabria. Esso si configura come un segmento del più generale campo tematico relativo allo studio della didattica del progetto di architettura in Italia ed è incentrato sull'insegnamento di Ludovico Quaroni nei corsi di Composizione Architettonica della Facoltà di Architettura di Roma, fra il 1963 e il 1973. Gli anni presi in considerazione sono quelli che vedono concentrate le questioni teoriche e metodologiche più cogenti del dibattito architettonico e urbanistico di questo periodo. Il tentativo di trovare strumenti di risoluzione di una “crisi” culturale che sta frammentando la disciplina architettonica all'interno di nuove forme interdisciplinari, coinciderà con la necessità di ribaltare il tradizionale ruolo del progetto e dell'azione stessa dell'architetto. Un ribaltamento dal quale deriveranno inediti scenari di ricerca destinati a segnare, da lí in poi, una nuova stagione didattica caratterizzata da metodi compositivi fondati su nuove scale, su nuovi fenomeni fisico sociali, coincidenti con le dinamiche urbano-territoriali legate alla “nuova dimensione”. Il 1963 segna il definitivo passaggio di Ludovico Quaroni, dall'insegnamento “urbanistico” tenuto a Firenze dal 1959, a quello “architettonico” intrapreso nella Facoltà di Roma. È questa la stagione che Manfredo Tafuri definirà del rinnovato ritorno di Quaroni, all'Architettura. Un ritorno caratterizzato da una visione del tutto inedita rispetto al panorama culturale italiano, teso a riportare i temi e le metodiche riguardanti il progetto della Città, dalla materia urbanistica a quella architettonica, fino a concentrarla nella messa a punto di una vera e propria nuova disciplina, definita da Quaroni, del Disegno Urbano. Essa sarà il risultato di una riflessione che andrà dal primo approccio “territorialista”, all'avvicinamento alle questioni più propriamente “urbane”, quali quelle derivate dalle esperienze relative alle tesi di laurea elaborate tra il ‘69 e il '73. Lavori che di fatto anticiperanno molti dei temi della futura ricerca architettonica, attivando una riflessione incentrata, d'ora in poi, sulla messa a punto di potenziali piani teorico- metodologici intenti a rifondare la disciplina a partire dal ritorno alla sua principale materia di studio: la Città criticamente riconfigurata ai moti trasformazionali del nuovo Presente storico.

The first edition of this book was published in Italian in 1989, about two years after the death of Ludovico Quaroni; this edition in English is addressed mainly to non-Italian scholars with an interest in modern architecture in Italy. Given the imperfect parallel between musical and literary composition, therefore, in this book an intimate intellectual atmosphere prevails, which reveals the author’s skill in creating a narrative and also in engaging in a type of critical writing that is rarely undertaken by architect-intellectuals. The five episodes in the book cover almost thirty years, from 1958 to 1987, which were years that remained deeply preserved in the author’s memory. The literary form of the pieces gives all of them a common structure: they are dialogues; usually consisting of brief exchanges of few words, spoken or written, between the author (Lucio Barbera) and Quaroni. In one of them – Charisma – the dialogue takes place between Quaroni and a larger chorus. In another – Elective Misunderstanding – we have a double dialogue at a distance, a trio, if we return to the musical metaphor, between Quaroni, Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso and Barbera. The last piece is a longer conversation by Quaroni on himself; a taking stock and a valediction. On the frontispiece, Barbera gives a clear indication of his intentions: “For students of Architecture who are well-educated and for architects interested in getting to know better a Master of their trade”.

This book contains the two formal lectures delivered by the authors at the University of Melbourne as part of the 2010 Miegunyah Distinguished Visiting Fellowship Program, and an anthology of essays written during the last ten years. These writings formed the basis for the academic activities undertaken in Australia during the residency at the Melbourne School of Design. CLAUDIO D'AMATO GUERRIERI is full Professor of Architectural Design and the current Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the Polytechnic of Bari, which he founded and first headed in 1990. Between 2003 and 2009, he was the Director of the Program in Architecture and Industrial Design within the same Faculty. He was previously Chair of Architecture at the University of Reggio Calabria, and taught at the University of Rome. Since the 1980s, he has been part of many government commissions on the transformation of architectural teaching in universities. Professor d'Amato Guerrieri received his Laurea in Architettura in 1971 from La Sapienza University of Rome, where he subsequently obtained a Master degree in Study and Restoration of Monuments in 1974. Since 1978 he is part of the Architects' Professional Register for the jurisdiction of Rome. ATTILIO PETRUCCIOLI holds the Chair in Landscape Architecture at the Polytechnic of Bari, where he is also the Director of the Architecture Department. Between 2003 and 2009, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture. Before his appointment in Italy, Professor Petruccioli was the Aga Khan Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, and the Director of the Aga Khan Program of Islamic Architecture at Harvard and MIT. He is currently a member of the Italian Inter- University Research Centre on Developing Countries (CIRPS), and sits on the Board of Directors of the American Centre for Maghrib Studies, the Board of the International Seminar on Urban Form, the Committee of Honour of the International Network of Traditional Building Architecture and Urbanism (INTBAU) of the Prince of Wales Foundation in London, and the International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments (IASTE). He is also a research associate at the Centre for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University.

Whatever 'ugliness' is, it remains a problematic category in architectural aesthetics – alternately vilified and appropriated, used either to shock or to invert conventions of architecture. This book presents sixteen new scholarly essays which rethink ugliness in recent architecture – from Brutalism to eclectic postmodern architectural productions – and together offer a diverse reappraisal of the history and theory of postmodern architecture and design. The essays address both broad theoretical questions on ugliness and postmodern aesthetics, as well as more specific analyses of significant architectural examples dating from the last decades of the twentieth century. The book attends to the diverse relations between the aesthetic register of ugliness and closely connected aesthetic concepts such as the monstrous, the ordinary, disgust, the excessive, the grotesque, the interesting, the impure and the sublime. This volume does not simply document the history of a postmodern anti-aesthetic through case studies. Instead, it aims to shed light on aesthetic problems that have been largely overlooked in the agenda of architectural theory. This book answers in detail the questions: How did postmodern architects appropriate troublesome contradictions bound to the raw ugliness of the real? Si può insegnare a progettare? Qual è il paradigma che racchiude la sfera teorica e quella applicativo-esperienziale proprie della disciplina dell’architettura? L’architettura è disciplina eteronoma, che trova le sue ragioni nell’ibridazione e contaminazione dei saperi. La formazione dell’architetto, intellettuale e figura tecnica, richiede una riflessione profonda e radicale sui fondamenti dei percorsi formativi, l’attualità dei modelli di insegnamento e gli strumenti di apprendimento. Le Scuole di Architettura rappresentano l’ambito in cui lo studente, riprendendo le parole di Louis I. Kahn, è chiamato a riflettere su tutto ciò che viene scambiato e sulla sua utilità. In quanto luogo di apprendimento, sperimentazione e verifica delle tecniche e degli strumenti più avanzati di una disciplina, le istituzioni dovranno necessariamente aprire a un confronto critico il proprio progetto culturale e didattico, in una logica di arricchimento degli orizzonti e di visione internazionale. Roberto Perris (1937-2010), architetto e professore universitario, ha vissuto e operato tra Roma, Latina e Bari. Dopo aver compiuto gli studi scientifici, si iscrisse alla Facoltà di Giurisprudenza e, in seguito all’incontro con Ugo Luccichenti, alla Facoltà di Architettura di Roma, ove si laureò con lode con Ludovico Quaroni. Da studente fece parte di studi di architettura condividendo esperienze concorsuali con Francesco Cellini, Franco Cervellini, Claudio D’Amato, Franco Purini, Mario Seccia, Andrea Silipo, Duccio Staderini, Laura Thermes, Paola Trucco; frequentò il GRAU e il Gruppo 63. Partecipò attivamente al movimento degli studenti del 1968 insieme a Paolo Flores D’Arcais, Massimiliano Fuksas, Renato Nicolini, Sergio Petruccioli e Franco Russo. Dal 1972, svolse attività didattica nei corsi di Progettazione architettonica a fianco di Ludovico Quaroni e di Salvatore Dierna. Dal 1994, insegnò Tecnologia dell’Architettura prima a Roma, poi dal 1998 al Politecnico di Bari dove dal settembre 2002 al marzo 2010 fu presidente del corso di laurea in Disegno Industriale.
