Frank W. Fischer ist einer der wenigen Autoren, die sich intensiv mit der Entwicklung des Luftverkehrsdienstes „Flugsicherung“ auseinandersetzen. So wurde von ihm die erfolgreiche Buchreihe „Die Entwicklung der Flugsicherung in Deutschland“ geschaffen, um die große Wissenslücke zu schließen, die aus dem Fehlen entsprechender Berichte, Dokumentationen und Nachweise über die historische und technische Entwicklung der Flugsicherung entstanden ist. So gibt es weder im Bereich der Fachliteratur noch in Bibliotheken und Archiven aussagekräftige Publikationen, welche die teilweise unvollständigen und teilweise widersprüchlichen Informationen aus zivilen und militärischen Quellen richtig und vollständig darstellen. Nachdem in den mittlerweile veröffentlichten Bänden die Entwicklung der Flugsicherung in Deutschland vor 1945, speziell in Westdeutschland nach 1945, insbesondere die Entwicklung während des Kalten Krieges und schließlich Beruf und Alltag eines Fluglotsen von 1957 bis 1984 ausführlich dokumentiert sind, wird mit dem neuesten Band nun auch die Entwicklung der Flugsicherung in der damaligen Sowjetischen Besatzungszone bzw. in der ehemaligen Deutschen Demokratischen Republik im Detail dargestellt. Besonders ausführlich geht der Autor dabei u.a. auf die Berliner Luftbrücke, den Messeflugverkehr in Leipzig, die Berliner Kontrollzone sowie auf den Flugverkehr der Interflug sowie der Luftstreitkräfte der Nationalen Volksarmee ein. Das Buch „Die Entwicklung der Flugsicherung in Ostdeutschland von 1945 bis 1990“ ist im Buchhandel in zwei Druckvarianten erhältlich: Zum einen steht eine umfassende Dokumentation auf mehr als 500 Seiten im Farbdruck zur Verfügung, die sich vorrangig an das Fachpublikum richtet, weil die als Anhang beigefügten Fotos, Luftfahrtkarten und Charts ausnahmslos farbig abgedruckt sind. Zum anderen existiert eine inhaltsgleiche Druckvariante, die allerdings in Graustufen und damit wesentlich kostengünstiger produziert worden ist. Sämtliche Anhänge sind auch in diesem Graustufendruck enthalten.
