Eeva-Kaarina Volanen oli yksi 1900-luvun valovoimaisimpia suomalaisia näyttelijöitä. Hän oli myös elokuvatähti, mestarilausuja, teatteritaiteen opettaja ja akateemikko, joka kuoli yllättäen kesken intensiivisen teatterityön. Jatkosodan aikaisessa Rintamateatterissa aloittaneen näyttelijän työkaari ulottui kuudelle vuosikymmenelle. Hänelle myönnettiin taiteen akateemikon arvonimi vuonna 1982. Hän sai myös useita palkintoja, mm. Pro Finlandian ja Ida Aalberg -palkinnon. Parhaan naispääosan Jussi-palkinnon Volanen sai kolme kertaa ja neljännen Jussin hän sai vuonna 1992 elämäntyöstään. Kirja seuraa Eeva-Kaarina Volasen (1921-1999) elämänvaiheita kuusankoskelaisesta rautatieläisperheestä Suomen Kansallisteatteriin ja valkokankaalle, yleisön, kriitikoiden, työtoverien ja ystävien ihailemaksi ja rakastamaksi naiseksi. Elämäkerta pyrkii purkamaan kuvaa Eeva-Kaarina Volasesta hillittynä, hallittuna, nöyränä ja ahkerana, mutta silti niin kirkkaasti tuikkivana työmyyränäyttelijänä. Sitäkin hän oli, mutta myös vahva tahtoihminen, lähes meediomainen näyttämön sähköistäjä ja mitä hurmaavin nainen, johon myös moni nuori vastanäyttelijä ihastui.
