L’idea di bonheur è una delle chiavi principali per penetrare l’intreccio e le prospettive etico-sociali tra XVII e XVIII secolo. Chiaramente distinta, dagli stessi teorici, in senso linguistico, semantico e concettuale, dalla nozione di felicità (che richiama mondi mitici e metafisici), l’idea di bonheur, che indica un orientamento particolare del problema del benessere umano in senso individuale e collettivo, percorre l’antropologia moderna quale luogo ove rimisurare il destino solitario dell’uomo e la sua possibilità mondana, per diventare il criterio della nuova organizzazione sociale, economica e politica della civiltà dei lumi. Questo volume procede dunque a una ricognizione della parabola del bonheur individuando le caratteristiche, i tempi e le modalità con i quali si è configurata nell’arco di due secoli, e disegna poi il significato specifico che tale nozione ha assunto nei suoi principali interpreti, da Saint-Évremond a Fontenelle, da Voltaire a Diderot fino all’abate Galiani.

Il militare filosofo è un testo fondamentale per comprendere il materialismo francese del ’700. Pubblicato anonimo nel 1767, è frutto del lavoro congiunto di Jacques-André Naigeon e del barone d’Holbach. Rappresenta la riscrittura – radicalizzata – di un manoscritto già circolante tra gli eruditi francesi, Difficultés sur la religion proposées au Père Malebranche, che solo negli anni ’70 del XX secolo si è attribuito a Robert Challe, tra i padri del deismo francese. Naigeon, poi biografo di Denis Diderot, si serve del manoscritto per divulgare i principi dell’ateismo e per condurre la sua battaglia politico-culturale contro le religioni rivelate. D’Holbach, nell’ultimo capitolo del testo, fa le prove generali per il Système de la nature, di cui Le militaire philosophe è una sorta di anticipazione. Ironico, disincantato, coraggioso, il militare che si scopre pensatore rappresenta la coscienza filosofica del secolo, pronta ormai a liberarsi da qualsiasi tutela e a rifondare interamente la società.

[Italiano]: Il presente lavoro costituisce una biografia intellettuale di Jacques-André Naigeon (1735-1810), importante figura del secolo dei Lumi francese. Biografo e primo editore di Diderot, Naigeon fu testimone privilegiato delle innumerevoli vicende politiche, sociali e culturali che sconvolsero la società francese. Ateo convinto, editore infaticabile, fine conoscitore della letteratura clandestina, il giovane Naigeon fece in tempo a collaborare agli ultimi volumi dell’Encyclopédie e a partecipare, con il barone d’Holbach, alla propagazione di numerosi scritti eterodossi, materialisti e ferocemente anti-clericali; dopo la Rivoluzione – la quale lo spinse alla riflessione ma non ad un’attività politica propriamente detta – fu integrato dalla cultura “ufficiale” tramite l’elezione presso l’Institut de France: ma nonostante alcuni lavori editoriali di grande pregio, Naigeon resterà esclusivamente la testimonianza vivente di una stagione culturale ormai irripetibile ./[English]:This work aims at being an intellectual biography of Jacques-André Naigeon (1735-1810), an important figure of French Enlightenment. Not only was he very close to Diderot - of whom he was biographer and editor - but he was also a privileged witness of the countless political, social and cultural events that led to the French Revolution. Besides being a convinced atheist, a tireless publisher, a fine connoisseur of Clandestine literature, Naigeon had the opportunity to collaborate in writing the last volumes of the Encyclopédie and to participate in the propagation of heterodox, materialistic and fiercely anti-clerical writings. After the Revolution - at the beginning of which he tried in vain to make himself heard by the Assemblée Nationale - he was then integrated into the "official" culture through the election at the Institut de France: however, even if he is the author of some prestigious works, Naigeon remains exclusively the living testimony of a now unrepeatable cultural season.

Madeleine de l’Aubespine (1546–1596), the toast of courtly and literary circles in sixteenth-century Paris, penned beautiful love poems to famous women of her day. The well-connected daughter and wife of prominent French secretaries of state, l’Aubespine was celebrated by her male peers for her erotic lyricism and scathingly original voice. Rather than adopt the conventional self-effacement that defined female poets of the time, l’Aubespine’s speakers are sexual, dominant, and defiant; and her subjects are women who are able to manipulate, rebuke, and even humiliate men. Unavailable in English until now and only recently identified from scattered and sometimes misattributed sources, l’Aubespine’s poems and literary works are presented here in Anna Klosowska’s vibrant translation. This collection, which features one of the first French lesbian sonnets as well as reproductions of l’Aubespine’s poetic translations of Ovid and Ariosto, will be heralded by students and scholars in literature, history, and women’s studies as an important addition to the Renaissance canon.

On the one hand le côté de Guermantes and on the other that of chez Swann... Few places like Illiers-Combray offer the tangible measure of a myth that has involved not only readers and writers, but also those who have reflected on the meaning and structures of modern fiction. As the great criticism of the 20th century and the most innovative reflections on the method would not be conceivable without the Recherche. Auerbach, Curtius, Spitzer, Poulet, Jauss, Deleuze, Richard, Genette, Barthes..., as well as Solmi, Debenedetti, Contini, and Macchia in Italy, measured themselves with essays and/or memorable books, while Caproni, Fortini, Ginzsburg, Raboni... tried themselves with translation. In short, the seduction of a work with a very dense intertextuality and variety of registers still resides, not only in the ability to talk about the history and culture of the West, offering the grandiose fresco of a universe in decline, but in the possibility of inserting itself on many levels (including that of meta-literature, non-fiction) as an obligatory point of passage. Thus contributing to create a world parallel to the real one, which is now populated by its doubles: cities, cathedrals, feelings, emotions, words intermittences... From the field of fiction to that, induced, of narratology, no doubt that Proust has changed our life, the perception of the world, and the way of looking at objects, and of reading books and things.
