Martin Luther’s collected sermons for the church year were originally called postil or postilla (in German: Postille) which was originally a term for Bible commentaries. It is derived from the Latin "post illa verba textus" (after these words) referring to Biblical readings. Luther's postil was published in two series: the Church Postil and the House Postil. His published sermons and catechisms were by far his most popular. They did more to teach people the Reformation than any other book. Luther intended his postils to serve common pastors and people, and therefore was one of the greatest educational and devotional books of the Reformation. From the time Martin Luther published the first part in 1521, every annual cycle of sermons on the lessons, whether consisting of homilies or formal sermons, is termed a postil. This unabridged edition of Luther's writings of the works of Martin Luther is an accurate and clear translation. We have Presents the Church Postil as the mature Luther wanted it to be. It includes Luther’s extensive revisions to his own work. For those who are not familiar with the Church calendar year we have elected to number and title each sermon accompanied with a short description of the contents accompanied by the Bible verse. Luther was fundamentally a preacher-pastor, "a care-taker of souls," whose ingenuity lies in his usage of the biblical message as a source of pastoral encouragement. This book seeks to capture the often-overlooked pastoral side of the Reformer through an examination of his sermons on John's gospel. The sermons on John show the intrinsic, close, and causal link between doctrine and consolation. They are an exercise of his vocation as a pastor, or more precisely, as a theologian of the cross who seeks to inculcate the good news of justification by faith in his people, leading them to experience it within the dialectic of law and gospel. St. John, said Luther, "is the master in the article of justification." Luther's theological method, namely, his theology of the cross, permeates and governs the exposition of the text, and all major themes of his theology-- Christology, Trinity, and soteriology--appear in his exegesis of John.

This is Luther's direct letter and treatise to Pope Leo X on his religious beliefs and a bruising analysis of the Catholic church. Luther strongly objected to making a new law of the forms and urged the retention of other good liturgies. While advocating Christian liberty in liturgical matters, he also spoke out in favor of maintaining and establishing liturgical uniformity among those sharing the same faith in a given area. "Concerning Christian Liberty" is a wonderful piece on Luther's balance between the Catholic Church and his teachings on liberty.
