November 1482 ein Junge Namens Martin Luder, der sich später Luther nannte, in der kleinen Stadt Eisleben das Licht der Welt erblickte, ahnte wohl noch niemand, dass dieser Junge einmal das gesamte Deutsche Reich in Atem halten würde. Nachdem die Familie Luther 1484 nach Mansfeld zog1, begab er sich mit viereinhalb Jahren auf die Mansfelder Lateinschule, welche er neun Jahre lang besuchen sollte.2 Im Jahr 1501 ging Luther auf Anweisung seines Vaters nach Erfurt, um an der hiesigen Universität zu studieren. 1505 erreichte er den Abschluss des Magisters. Doch er setzte sein Studium nicht fort, sondern begab sich am 17. Juli 1505 in das Erfurter Augustiner-Kloster.3 Im Jahr 1508 wurde Luther als Vertretung für einen erkrankten Dozenten an die Universität in Wittenberg versetzt. Dort blieb er bis ins Jahr 1509 und kehrte dann nach Erfurt zurück.4 1512 verließ Luther Erfurt endgültig und wurde Professor für Theologie in Wittenberg. 5 Hier begann Luther, seine eigene Theologie zu entwickeln, welche mit dem Thesenanschlag vom 31.10.1517 seine vorläufigen Höhepunkt finden sollte. In der nachfolgenden Arbeit möchte ich näher auf den Ketzerprozesses Luthers eingehen. Dieser verläuft von der Reaktion auf den Thesenanschlag über den Augsburger Reichstag bis hin zum Wormser Reichstag mit dem Wormser Edikt im Jahr 1521.

Oktober 1517 entfachte einen Konflikt um die Glaubenspaltung, der viele Jahrezehnte lang anhalten und Forscher der heutigen Zeit noch beschäftigen sollte. Für den Meinungsaustausch über diesen entbrannten Zwiespalt, in dem die Person Martin Luthers als „staatsgefährdender Unruhstifter“ bezeichnet wurde, bedurfte es einer „Diskussionsebene“ , damit die Auseinandersetzungen friedlich ausgetragen und eine Lösung des Konfliktes möglichst schnell herbeigeführt werden konnte. Diese Diskussionsebene bildete der Reichstag. Bei der Eröffnung des Wormser Reichstages am 27. Januar 1521 durch Kaiser Karl V., war noch unklar, ob die Luthersache überhaupt Gegenstand der Verhandlungen sein werde. Die Luthersache wurde nur als einzelner Punkt in die Verhandlung aufgenommen, wurde dann jedoch zum herausragenden Ereignis, bei dem man Martin Luther sogar schon als „politischen Führer einer revolutionären Massenbewegung“ darstellte. Daher sollte die theologische Frage der wahren Lehre, die verfassungspolitische Problematik der Kirche im Reich und die juristische Frage nach der Verfügungsgewalt über das Kirchengut noch lange die verschiedenen politischen Lager beschäftigen . Diese Arbeit wird sich im folgenden ausführlichst mit dem religiösen Gegenstand des Wormser Reichstages im Jahre 1521 auseinandersetzen, da er einen wichtigen Grundstein dafür legte, dass lange Zeit keine Lösung und Einigung über den Glaubenszwiespalt stattfinden konnte. Zudem war er die erste Reichsversammlung des jungen Kaisers Karl V., der sich Antworten auf schwerwiegende Fragen der Kirchen- und Reichspolitik erhoffte, welche jedoch alle von der Luthersache überlagert wurden. Zu Beginn wird ein allgemeiner, ausführlicher Überblick über den Wormser Reichstag und seine Umstände gegeben, der in der Analyse des Wormser Edikts und einer abschließenden Zusammenfassung enden wird. Genauer werden dabei die Begriffsdefinition und die Bedeutung des Terminus Reichstag, die Wahl des Ortes und die Ausschreibung des Reichstages, die Ankunft Luthers in Worms, das Verhör Luthers und dessen Gegenrede und das Wormser Edikt analysiert. Es stellt sich im Folgenden nun die Frage, in welchem Verhältnis der Kaiser und die politisch unterschiedlichen Lager zu Luther standen und welche Maßnahmen man gegen ihn einleitete. Weiterhin soll von Interesse sein, mit welchen Verfahren gegen Luther vorgegangen wurde und wie diese sich durchsetzen konnten.
