Compares Luther's views on the Jews, read in the context of the period of their origin, with how they were seen by the antisemitic Deutsche Christen and their journal, "Die Nationalkirche". The Deutsche Christen was a racist, pro-Nazi German Protestant movement active in 1932-45, and "Die Nationalkirche" appeared between 1938-41. Many of the contributors to the journal were members of the Eisenacher Entjüdungsinstitut, and based their interpretations of Luther on the views of the antisemitic Bavarian theologian Wolf Meyer-Erlach. Luther was used by them as an authority in order to boost the credibility of the journal's abstruce anti-Jewish theses. Concludes that Luther was misused by the Deutsche Christen. His alleged anti-Judaism was theologically-motivated and rooted, inter alia, in his doctrine of justification. Therefore, his statements regarding the expulsion of Jews were based on theories concerning other heretics, not on hatred of the Jews.

Durch seine Betonung des gnädigen Gottes, seine Predigten, Schriften und seine Bibelübersetzung hat er die Gesellschaft seiner Zeit, die durch die römisch-katholische Kirche geprägt war, nachhaltig verändert. Als Urheber der Evangelischen Kirche hat er alte Denkstrukturen aufgebrochen und völlig neue Wege aufgezeigt. Eines seiner Hauptanliegen war die Gleichheit aller Menschen vor Gott. So ist ein Bauer durch seinen Glauben und die Gnade Gottes genauso gerechtfertigt, wie ein Pfarrer. Aber wie so oft, hat auch die Medaille Martin Luther zwei Seiten. So predigte der Mensch, der diese Gleichheit aller vor Gott fordert, dass die Juden verfolgt und ausgeschlossen werden sollten. Zeit seines Lebens war der Umgang mit dem nachbiblischen jüdischen Volk ein Thema, was ihn beschäftigte. Wenn man die Schriften betrachtet, in denen er sich über Juden äußert, fällt es schwer zu glauben, das der Autor dieser Schrift zugleich Urheber des evangelischen Glaubens ist. Nicht selten wird Luther auch vorgeworfen, er sei mit seinen Judenschriften ein wichtiger Wegbereiter für den Antisemitismus der Deutschen im 20. Jahrhundert gewesen War Martin Luther wirklich ein Antisemit, oder entspricht er dem Bild eines Antijudaisten? Diese Frage möchte ich in meiner folgenden Arbeit in mehreren Schritten klären. Um mir zu Beginn der Arbeit ein Bild über die gesellschaftliche Meinung über Juden, beziehungsweise über ihre Situation von der Entstehung des Christentums bis zur Reformation, machen zu können, betrachte ich die Entwicklung des jüdischen Stereotyps. Im nächsten Schritt wird unter dem Thema „Die Judenschriften des frühen Luthers“ die Schrift „Dass Jesus Christus ein geborener Jude sei“ betrachtet, die sich in ihrem Ton und in den Möglichkeiten für den Umgang mit Juden, von den späten Judenschriften unterscheidet. Diese späten Judenschriften Luthers werden im Folgenden durch Darstellungen von „Die Juden und ihre Lügen“, „Vom Schem Hamphoras und vom Geschlecht Christi“ und „Vermahnung wider die Juden“ dargelegt. Im nächsten Teil dieser Arbeit wird die Wirkungsgeschichte der Äußerungen Luthers betrachtet. Abschließend werde ich in meinem Fazit versuchen eine Antwort auf die Frage, ob Martin Luther ein Antisemit ist, zu formulieren.

The place and significance of Martin Luther in the long history of Christian anti-Jewish polemic has been and continues to be a contested issue. The literature on the subject is substantial and diverse. While efforts to exonerate Luther as "merely" a man of his times who "merely" perpetuated what he had received from his cultural and theological tradition have rightly been jettisoned, there still persists even among the educated public the perception that the truly problematic aspects of Luther's anti-Jewish attitudes are confined to the final stages of his career. It is true that Luther's anti-Jewish rhetoric intensified toward the end of his life, but reading Luther with a careful eye toward "the Jewish question," it becomes clear that Luther's theological presuppositions toward Judaism and the Jewish people are a central, core component of his thought throughout his career, not just at the end. It follows then that it is impossible to understand the heart and building blocks of Luther's theology (justification, faith, liberation, salvation, grace) without acknowledging the crucial role of "the Jews" in his fundamental thinking. Luther was constrained by ideas, images, and superstitions regarding the Jews and Judaism that he inherited from medieval Christian tradition. But the engine in the development of Luther's theological thought as it relates to the Jews is his biblical hermeneutics. Just as "the Jewish question" is a central, core component of his thought, so biblical interpretation (and especially Old Testament interpretation) is the primary arena in which fundamental claims about the Jews and Judaism are formulated and developed.

Die beiden vorliegenden Beiträge sind im Rahmen der Luther-Vorträge im Reformationsjahr 2017 in der Evangelischen Stadtakademie Bochum gehalten worden. Sie stießen auf ein so großes Interesse, dass sie in der Reihe Evangelische Perspektiven veröffentlicht werden. Der Autor konnte dabei zurückgreifen auf ältere Veröffentlichungen, die aber inhaltlich entscheidend erweitert wurden. Der zweite Vortrag greift in die auch aktuell wieder geführte Diskussion um die Mitverantwortung Luthers für den nationalsozialistischen Holocaust ein. Günter Brakelmann kommt es zentral darauf an, dass man klar den christlichen Antisemitismus unterscheidet von dem Rassenantisemitismus, der die ideologische Grundlage für die physische Vernichtung der Juden war. ,Es ist nicht zu bestreiten, dass große Teile des Protestantismus im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert durch ihren politischen und kulturellen Antisemitismus, häufig gepaart mit dem religiösen Antijudaismus, die NS-Verfolgung der Juden argumentativ und psychologisch mit vorbereitet haben. Aber nirgends - bei keinem Theologen oder einer kirchlichen Gruppe - findet sich im Kaiserreich oder in der Weimarer Republik ein Rassenantisemitismus, der die ideologische Begründung für die physische Vernichtung der Juden abgibt. ́ Eine heute wieder zu hörende Ahnenreihe von Luther über Hitler zum Holocaust kann ohne weiteres nicht konstruiert werden. In dieser klaren Unterscheidung wird aber auch deutlich, dass der Protestantismus eine Mitverantwortung für die nationalsozialistische Judenpolitik hat. Das Verschränkungsverhältnis von Protestantismus und Drittem Reich wird klar herausgearbeitet. Die evangelische Kirche in ihrer Gesamtheit hat nie ein deutliches Wort weder gegen den fortschreitenden Entzug der Rechte noch gegen die folgenden NS-Verbrechen gesagt. Nur einzelne Pfarrer und evangelische Laien haben das Schweigen ihrer Kirche durchbrochen. Für diese kritische Unterscheidung, die sowohl für unser Luther-Bild Bedeutung hat wie auch die für die bleibende Mitverantwortung der Kirche bis zum notwendigen Widerstand gegen jede Form des erneut offen zu Tage tretenden Antisemitismus, dankt die Evangelische Stadtakademie Bochum ihrem Referenten Günter Brakelmann.
