Bachelor Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject German Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, Bielefeld University, language: English, abstract: Conflicts with our fellow human beings are always part of living together. In the meantime, there are many approaches to dealing with conflicts and overcoming differences. But so far there is none that has been able to establish itself as the only true theory. Could this claim possibly be made for Nonviolent communication? Is it a suitable approach to conflict management? According to Rosenberg, Nonviolent communication can be successfully applied in a wide variety of situations. He includes "close relationships, families, schools, organizations and institutions, therapy and counseling, diplomatic and business negotiations, disputes and conflicts of all kinds." But is Nonviolent communication an approach that exists not only as a theory, but has its impact precisely where conflicts actually arise, in everyday interactions with others? And can Nonviolent communication also help people in their lives away from conflicts? These considerations have led to an overarching research question: Is Nonviolent Communication suitable for everyday life? For a better understanding, the first part of the paper will first highlight in detail the basic assumptions of Nonviolent communication, how it came about and how it works, as well as its special features. Four other communication models will be used to further illustrate Nonviolent communication; this part of the paper will be its main focus. Elements from the work of Carl Rogers, Virginia Satir and Friedemann Schulz von Thun, as well as from the model of Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP), will show the extent to which Rosenberg was influenced by other models in the development of Nonviolent communication. On the basis of these models, which were chosen because of their familiarity and recognized success, the suitability of Nonviolent communication for everyday use will also be discussed. Nonviolent communication will then be examined for dangers. This will be done on the one hand via the theory of cognitive dissonance, on the other hand the aspect of manipulation will be included.

Code Meshing As World English written by Vershawn Ashanti Young and has been published by National Council of Teachers of English (Ncte) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Education categories.

Although linguists have traditionally viewed code-switching as the simultaneous use of two language varieties in a single context, scholars and teachers of English have appropriated the term to argue for teaching minority students to monitor their languages and dialects according to context. For advocates of code-switching, teaching students to distinguish between "home language" and "school language" offers a solution to the tug-of-war between standard and nonstandard Englishes. This volume arises from concerns that this kind of code-switching may actually facilitate the illiteracy and academic failure that educators seek to eliminate and can promote resistance to Standard English rather than encouraging its use. The original essays in this collection offer various perspectives on why code-meshing--blending minoritized dialects and world Englishes with Standard English--is a better pedagogical alternative than code-switching in the teaching of reading, writing, listening, speaking, and visually representing to diverse learners. This collection argues that code-meshing rather than code-switching leads to lucid, often dynamic prose by people whose first language is something other than English, as well as by native English speakers who speak and write with "accents" and those whose home language or neighborhood dialects are deemed "nonstandard." While acknowledging the difficulties in implementing a code-meshing pedagogy, editors Vershawn Ashanti Young and Aja Y. Martinez, along with a range of scholars from international and national literacy studies, English education, writing studies, sociolinguistics, and critical pedagogy, argue that all writers and speakers benefit when we demystify academic language and encourage students to explore the plurality of the English language in both unofficial and official spaces.

Particle Verbs And Local Domains written by Jochen Zeller and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-10-30 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book offers a new account of particle verbs in German and Dutch by looking at the conditions under which a non-morphological structure may exhibit “word-like” properties. It shows that although particles are represented as phrasal complements of their verbs, they lack the functional structure which is usually associated with phrases. The author uses the concept of a “local domain”, which can be established by terminal nodes both in syntax and in morphology, to demonstrate why the impoverished syntactic structure of particle verbs shares important features of complex words derived in morphology. The analysis is substantiated through a detailed study of the syntactic, semantic, and morphological properties of particle verbs. Special attention is given to the relevance of local domains for the association of lexical information about sound and meaning with terminal nodes in morphological and syntactic structures.
