The International Meeting on Brain Oncology in Rennes was organised in honor of Jean Pecker, to pay tribute to his contribution to the development of neurological sciences and to take stock of the current state of knowledge on brain tumors, a domain in which the role of neurosurgery has been and will continue to be primordial. During the two-day conference, the major themes of brain oncology studies, both fundamental and clinical, were examined: oncogenesis, tumoral markers and immunology, metabolic and diagnosis imaging, prognostic factors and therapeutic strategies. The large number and high quality of participations resulted in a genuinely synthetic view of current advances in research, of which this book presents the essentials. We have attempted both to preserve the richness of scientific exchanges which occurred and to publish a great many oral and poster communications. The book respects the organization of conference sessions, and thus reflects the importance accorded to glial tumor studies. This may seem disproportionate given their frequency of occurrence in proportion to total numbers of intracranial tumor processes, but their gravity and quasi-total resistance to current therapeutic methods are ample justification. Moreover, this is the domain in which hopes of progress are beginning to appear, and it is becoming possible to envisage treatment based on recently established fundamental knowledge.

Recent Concepts In Sarcoma Treatment written by J.R. Ryan and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Medical categories.

There have been significant advances in the treatment of sarcomas in the past several years. Further, different clini cal treatment programs are being advocated in different areas including surgery alone, surgery with preoperative or post operative chemotherapy, surgery with different radiotherapy modalities, with each investigator espousing his own treat ment program. On the other side, there is the question of whether these treatment programs are offering better results or whether the natural history of sarcomas has changed. The International Symposium on Sarcomas was held at Innisbrook Resort, Tarpon Springs, Florida, October 8-10, 1987. This was the first international symposium to date involving all of the disciplines treating sarcomas including pathologists, orthopaedic surgeons, general surgeons, medical oncologists, pediatric oncologists, and radiation oncol ogists. The Symposium brought together a number of special ists working in the clinical field of sarcomas for a presen tation of their specific treatment programs and their results. The presentations were followed by panel discussions to stimulate educational debate as to the different forms of treatment for sarcomas and to formulate some conformity in control of disease, control of spread, and ultimate function for the patient. The development of monoclonal antibodies to human tumor associated antigens has greatly facilitated the application of immunohistochemical techniques to analyze surgically removed tissues. During the last few years this approach has been utilized by a progressively increasing number of investigators to analyze malignant cells. Although monoclonal antibodies to tumor associated antigens have not become yet routine reagents in immunopathology, they have provided new information which could not be obtained with conventional antisera or histochemical procedures. The following are representative examples. TUmor associated antigens have been identified which display a restricted distribution in normal tissues and therefore may represent useful markers for radio imaging and appropriate targets for immunotherapy. In spite of undetec table differences with conventional histopathological approaches hetero geneity has been found in the antigenic profile of tumor cells within a lesion, in autologous lesions removed from different anatomic sites from a given patient and in lesions removed from different patients. Phenotypes of tumor cells have been identified which correlate with the biology of tumor cells and with the clinical course of the disease. From a practical view point the use of monoclonal antibodies in immunopathology has enhanced interactions between pathologists and immunologists, as exemplified by the present book. Such interactions have contributed to the application of basic research to clinical problems. The chapter of this book discuss investigations performed with monoclonal antibodies to antigens expressed by various types of normal and malignant human cells.

Society The Third Symposium of the International held in against Breast Cancer CONTRA CANCRUM MAMMARIUM was Paris, at UNESCO, on December 9-12, 1985. Scientists and physicians came from allover the world to attend this meeting. They came from Japan, Brazil, the United States and the Middle East, from Belgium, Finland, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Yugoslavia, and from allover France. They all contributed to the success of the Symposium and my cordial thanks go to all of them and particularly to the invited speakers and chairmen of the sessions, to the free-paper contributors, and to the contributors to the Slide Seminar. Warm personal thanks go to two friends: to Professor Dan H. Moore from Hahnemann University, Philadelphia, who was always there to help in many ways, and to Professor Pietro Gullino from the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, and now Torino, Italy, who consistently gave invaluable advice. Special thanks are also due to those who assisted in the preparation and organization of the Symposium: the UNESCO officers, the interpreters, the secretaries and hostesses, the BEBA Company with the help of Dr.Bernard Martin and Mrs.Jacqueline Bouchy, the WILD LEITZ-France S.A. for projection facilities and microscope arrangements for the workshop on mammary cytology which was successfully conducted by Dr.Colette Marsan. During the four days, three main topics were discussed: ~ E~idemiology, genetiCS and oncogenes, related subjects of great actuality.

The control of breast cancer, a leading cause of cancer death in women, will depend ultimately on our understanding of the disease--its origin, and progression which in turn will permit the effective management of its treatment, its detection, and perhaps even its prevention. It is for a better understanding of this spectrum of biological processes crossing back and forth across scientific and clinical disciplines that this volume strives. Several broad topics have been addressed in organizing a large mass of work representing state of the art updates from many of the major breast cancer research groups around the world. The chapters in the first section speak to the factors affecting the growth and development of normal and malignant mammary epithelium. Special emphasis is placed on insights drawn from developmental biology, the cellular interactions that occur in the mammary gland during growth and differentiation; and the study of hormones and growth factors in the regulation of growth and differentiation of normal and malignant breast tissues. In the section on the biology of breast cancer, there is a characterization of relevant model systems for the study of breast cancer and their contribution to our understanding of preneoplasia and progression in mammary cancer. Included as well is the current status of major studies on the immunological aspects of breast cancer and the latest efforts in the development of markers for metastasis in breast cancer.
